SO Upset! Don't think Mia can come to work anymore... I'm so sad.......... and confused as well. Kinda long, but need to vent and this is one place where I know everyone will understand. Since the week I brought Mia home as a puppy until now, she has come to work with me almost every single day! And just yesterday as I was walking out the door to go home I hear a fax coming through. I noticed it was from the management office of our building. There's about 5 or 6 buildings total owned by this company so I'm sure it went to every office. So I picked it up and only read briefly that they are going to be enforcing rules regarding pets, which means NO PETS PERMITTED! My heart dropped!!!!!!!! Mia brightens the day of so many that work in our building. She is so loved by everyone around on our side of the building. As I read the fax more clearly this morning, it mentions the management office has received complaints. Keep in mind, Mia isn't the only dog throughout these office buildings. I see lots of dogs, big and small. Also, right across the hall are Gigi and Alister....2 yorkies that Mia plays with almost every day. I just wonder if any complaints were made against our three dogs? Also, the reason for my confusion is because the owner of all of the buildings will come in occasionally and check to make sure all is well, and he's met Mia a number of times and I've asked if it is ok for her to be here and he said YES! This was months ago. This owner also brings his yellow lab to work every day. Maybe he's not setting the best example to tenants? My boss is also a dog lover and brings her Newfoundland (HUGE) into the office on occasion so I know she will be slightly upset as well. They say.. "exceptions to this policy under extraordinary circumstances have been documented in the terms of the applicable leases", I wonder what those exceptions are!? Grrrr... I'm so, so sad right now. An older lady that works next door says she going to get a doctors note saying that Mia helps with her stress!! She's just as upset as I am! If I can no longer bring Mia to work, I'm going to be one VERY unhappy camper. But rules are rules... :( |
maybe the managements rent the buildings and the buildings' owners put out the fax. You've been lucky to take your dog as much as you have. I cannot take Gabby anywhere here except for Petsmart. She's cleaner than some people that go into stores and I never put her down either:( I hope it blows over and you can keep taking your dog. |
I know I've been lucky! And I appreciate the fact that my boss lets me bring her to work with me. I just hope I can continue to bring her... we'll see. |
That sucks Poor Mia , she will probably go into a depression or something....what is it with some people????? It's not like the dogs bit someone or something geeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz |

That is a shame! Maybe you can talk to the manager?! Maybe something happened and you didn't know about it!? I used to live in a house with 3 newfoundlands, a pit mix, and a border collie mix, we took them on a walk, and the police were called on us, because we didnt have them on a leash, and yet they were walking behind us in a single file line! some people are just stupid and HAVE to follow the rules.... Good Luck!!!! |
Our building is so small compared to the others... so I can't wrap my mind around who could have complained!! It very well could have come to management from a different office regarding a different dog...but i just don't know. Our office building is so small, I just don't think it could have come from here. There is only 1 person out of the 3 offices that could have made a phone call... I'm going to talk to her boss today (I know her boss well) and see what she thinks about it. I'd rather not go to her directly and cause any tension around here. I've seen more and more people around are office buildings walking their dogs, maybe its just got a little overwhelming in the main 3 story building where the owners office and management office is. |
Oh that stinks. I'm pondering if the exemption to that rule...applies to the owner's dog? |
But, wouldnt you think they would be ok with smaller breeds, rather than larger ones!? |

Well if I were a big dog owner...that would make me mad. |

Just talked to my boss about it and I think next time I catch the owner of all the buildings I'm going to talk to him about it and she what he has to say. Just the fact that he's been in our office a number of times and has pet Mia and has told me straight out that its ok that she's here, I feel a little better about our office in particular. If I need to pay some kind of pet deposit, I'm totally willing. |
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sterotype larger dogs with smaller dogs, because to me, dogs are dogs, any shape or size...but maybe someone in the building(s) are terrified of a little or big dog......:( I would just talk to your boss and find out- maybe they can work out something with you!? |
:( How disappointing! I'm guessing something has happened w/one of the other dogs that's came to the building at some point. They probably feel they have to tell everyone the rules so they can't be told they are discreminating (sp). Maybe your coworker will get that note stating she helps with stress and you'll have the exception you need;) |
But you know what family.....not everyone feels about dogs the way we do. Most of my personal girlfriends just HATE them, and they only tolerate Maya when they come around my house. Some people are afraid of them no matter how large or how small,. and they feel about them the way I do about snakes. I don't like snakes, nor the people who call them their PETS and keep them around. I can't stand to look at them or watch them move, it's not about whether or not they can "get" to me or Bite me or hurt me or whether they are poisonous or not. As much as one of my girlfriends does not like dogs, she hates and fears cats even more. SO no telling someone in that building might feel that way. |
I am suprised you were all allowed to bring your dogs in, big or small to work. Its a bummer you cannot any more, I would love love love to be able to take my dogs with me to work (if I worked). Sorry to hear about the rule change. :thumbdown |
I know how you feel , I use to work in an office that allowed me to bring my yorkies. Then one day that was it.. some one brought a big dog in and scared someone and that was it... now i cant no pets allowed at my new job and man i cant wait til 5 to bust out of here to get home an see them.. |
To play Devil's Advocate here: The complaints received were probably not against your dog or the dogs across the hall. However, you have mentioned that a lot of larger dogs have been putting in an appearance. Many people are afraid of dogs. Many more are allergic. And then there are those who just don't like stepping in what dogs may leave behind. It may even be a liability insurance issue. My office landlord has a clause prohibiting dogs which he doesn't really enforce - but he can if he needs to. A former tenant brought Rotties to work, and the place needed to be fumigated for a flea infestation that wouldn't quit when they left. If Management was to issue an order that no dogs over 15 lbs. were allowed on premises, the folks with the bigger dogs would revolt (as would you, I'm sure, if you owned a Lab or Shepherd or something like that!). Everyone loves their beastie, and no one wants to be the object of discrimination. If you continued to bring Mia to work and someone else saw her who no longer can bring THEIR dog to work, there'd be all sorts of hard feelings and trouble. Therefore, the only logical way to handle the situation is to prohibit all dogs. It really sucks that you can't take your pup with you. It will be hard on her now: she's used to going with you. But it's the fair (and only legal) thing to do. It sucks BIG time, but there it is. |
Hyper Allergenic Breeds We operate a bed and breakfast. We allow non-shedding dogs (no matter the size) due to folks with allergies. In the past when we took all breeds we spent a lot of time picking hair from the fabric chairs, etc. Yorkies fall into that cartegory so maybe this could help in your situation. Good luck! |
Are you saying yorkies shedd cause they dont... forgive me if I read your post wrong.. THat is why we have yorkies cause they dont shed. |

What a shame. You have been so lucky to be able to take Mia to work with you. |
I am not allowed to bring my dogs to work ever! That would fun though! One time I mentioned bringing them in on a saturday we were working so people could meet them and a b*tch woman in accounting said "They finally got rid of the fleas in my office, I don't want more fleas!" I said "uumm Im sorry, my dogs probably get bathed and groomed more than I do!" She quickly stammered and said that others would bring their dogs in who are not as well kept as mine are. I was PISSED! My boss was there and as we were walking out my boss said "Your dogs are probably cleaner than she is!" LOL |

I totally agree... Unfortuntely, It's the only fair solution if, in fact, someone did complain about the dogs. |
Brodi mom: I am sorry if I was not clear. I am saying Yorkies are non-shedding and are hyper allergenic. The point I was making is just that...non shedding dogs. |

I am thinking that it could have to do with insurance purposes... Also, the Allergy thing is A concern, as well as the people who do not like dogs ! I think you might be able to bring her if you can get A Qualified medical Doctor to write A letter why it is Important to have the dog with you. The better Qualified the easier it will be . In acuality, by law if A person has any type of Disability and A Doctor Supports the Claim , Asking for resonable accomadations is A valid way to go about it. It is something to think about. |
Ugggh i am so sorry my heart goes ou to you and your baby mia. keep us updated :) |
I'm so sorry. I know your little one will be heartbroken as well if that is what they do. After all, she's used to coming with you everyday and not being left home alone. |
That's really too bad. We used to be allowed dogs in our office too... not constantly, but I would ask my boss every once in awhile if I could bring Layla in, if she was at the vet and needed to be watched for the rest of the day, or if I was leaving town after work and didn't want to drive all the way across the city to pick her up. He always said it was okay. She was really well behaved. Then a few other people brought in their dogs, and new puppies, and they were hyper or whining or barking all day, pooping in senior management offices, peeing on reports... A few people complained, because we do host meetings with clients, and it just didn't look professional to have these dogs constantly zipping around the office. I really think it would have been fine how it was, to be allowed to bring them once in awhile out of necessity... but when people started bringing 3 or 4 dogs every single day it got a little out of control, and people weren't getting as much work done. So the management decided NO MORE DOGS. Like it has been said before, it's not fair to just say some dogs are okay and others aren't. The management actually did tell me that my dog wasn't the problem at all, she was the little angel who would just sleep on my desk all day! But I understood... it is a workplace, not a doggy daycare. |
Aww Sara I feel for you, poor little Mia:(, now you may have to get her a little bro or sis ;) |
Ah that sucks:( I am lucky, I get to bring my pooches to work everday, they can roam if I wish it, not questions asked....ooh yeah, *I* am the boss:) |
