I read so many horror stories I decided I was going to groom Humphrey myself. Sooo I watched some videos, read a book on the issue, got clippers and professional scissors and thought to myself it was going to be a piece of cake. Well, last saturday I woke up in very high spirits, put Humphrey in his tub gave him a bath put him on a towel, got all my gear and went for it. Needless to say, It wasn't great. I left some very short bits and since his hair color is changing the short bits look more like a mange attack, I was appalled and soooo sad. But my little guy behaved like an angel and I got tons of puppy kisses afterwards. I feel awful everytime i think about it, but he seems to not care much. |

I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience as so many of us here have. I think he's adorable still and I love so many of the pics in your album. Beautiful! Yorkie hair grows fast and in a few weeks he'll start to look better. My poor Scooter had more than a few bad ones over the years and I always kept him short. He came back a few times with his legs cut really short like yours and I always kept his legs longer. |
ok girls her it goes.I sit her and listen to you over protective moms talk about groomers.Well I'm a groomer and a yorkie lover. Let me say one thing, your pups are not always that cute sweet little angel you have home, Some time it just takes 1 time of sadation to get a dog through grooming. But it the groomers last resort to have him sadted and only a vet or the owner cansadate him.It is aginst the law in my state for a groomer to sadate a animal. As far as him being to short. Sometimes we have to do what is best for the dog.Just because you brush the outer layer does not mead his legs were not the problem.Dont get me wrong there are some bad groomers and good groomers. Feel your groomer out ,make sure she loves animals and its not just a job to her. |
so girls dont take what I said the wrong way, but sometimes it a reason for those short legs |
Aww love. That's such a shame. He shouldn't be afraid. I'm so lucky my groomer comes to my house. She would dream on using clippers if they shows signs of being scared. She uses scissors. She's ok with Katie now though and uses the clippers on her. Suzi is having her first clip on Friday, and I trust my groomer completely. She told me to put the clippers (The ones my hubby uses) on near to her to get her used the noise several times, and I cut the hair around her botty and her eyes myself. I do hope your little one gets over his fear. Hugs Shirl x x |

Well, hubby came home last night and told me to buy the scissors and clippers and we were going to start doing the grooming ourselves. He is so good to help me. He always helps me bath Lucky. I think that in time hopefully he will know that he has to be groomed and know that we are'nt going to hurt him and get over his fear. I hope so anyways. It will be awhile before he needs cut so I have plenty of time to research. :) |

I am a groomer too (with two little yorkie myself) and I can tell you that of ALL the puppies I groom usually yorkies are the worst behaved during the groom (dolls after and before but during...shiver!!!)...I think it is cause we spoil them SO much and they are so smart and STUBBORN!! I know it is illegal in all of North America for groomers to use sedation, that falls under vet practices. The only dog I suggest they go to a groomer at a vet clinic is the ones who are down right vicious, or flailing and jumping so hard I worry for THEIR safety. I have a lady with 4 yorkies and all were nightmares to groom. She had been thrown out of every shop cause her dogs were SOOO bad. So she started coming weekly with all four. Every week and all I did was bath them. it took a few months and then bath/dry was fine, we kept progresisng further and further, nails, clippers, etc. Soon they realized that the grooming was going to happen no matter what. They all behave, only 3 need to be muzzled for nails only, one still needs to be muzzled througout the enitre groom cause he will be fine then decide to eat you but without the muzzle I can now handle him no biggie. I know ALL their quirks, what each likes and dislikes. They now come in once every 2 months. Yes it cost her $$$ but now she has lovely dogs to groom. Did your grooming say what it was specifically that your yorkie hated?? Was there any exercises you could work with him at home?? With new pups or behaviour issues I will send home some 'exercies' to do, and I can almost always tell which owners have worked with their dogs and who doesn't. mayeb your pup needs an inbetween grooming session that is JUST a bath and tidy to get him used to the idea of grooming. When you drop him off are you apprehensive? nervous?? Remember you can NOT fool your dog, when you drop him off get excited! let him feed off that energy!! Before the groom make sure he has had a REALLY good walk and is beat out, that will disspell any excess energy he may havIs he making any babysteps of progress for the groom?? Soemtimes it can take over a year till a dog has finally got the 'hang' of grooming. I will keep groomign them as long as I see improvement each groom. |
Lucky's Momma, let me say that I know exactly how you feel. I took Lucy last October and described in detail what I wanted, puppy cut but not too short, squared face, etc. She was SHAVED. And not only was she cut too short but it was cut unevenly!! There were chunks of long hairs all over and each side of her face was uneven by like 2 inches!!! I was furious. I took her back and a different lady evened her out but that didn't help that she looked like a little rat :( and Lucy\'s hair grows very sloooow. What topped it all off is that people were over at my house that night and one lady was like "Oh you have a yorkie?! Where is she?" and Lucy was right there. So she hasn\'t been groomed since. Which I know is bad, but luckily like I said, her hair grows slow. My uncle\'s girlfriend grooms dogs and I was supposed to take Lucy to her but then I had the fear of HER messing it up too and it\'s a little more difficult to be POd at family. So yesterday I groomed Lucy myself and although not perfect she looks 100% better than the $50 cut I paid for! It started with a few snips around her eyes and then I just took the hair off a little at a time. And guess what I got...a puppy cut....not too short...with a squared face. If you want something done right, do it yourself. Sorry for the long post! |
