Come again??? I was reading another thread...and decided to start this one. If and when someone rudely says something ugly or negative about your dog, what do you come back with? My jerk of a father-in-law makes rude comments about my dogs everytime he comes over. He pets them, talks to them and then will tell me..."These are the ugliest dogs I've ever seen". I know that he only says it to get under my skin and I've learned to not let my anger show...since that is what he is striving for. He owns 3 bird dogs...that are kept outside 24/7 and only let out of their 1/2 acre pen when he takes them hunting. One is being treated for heartworms as I speak. They are given ZERO attention and their only human contact is when they are fed in the evenings. Anyway, so what do YOU say when someone is being ugly? |
I would say with a smile "Yeah they take after your side of the family when it comes to looks!" See how he likes the "JOKE" |
Nothing.. you're right he's just doing it to get a rise out of you. I usually ignore people when they make comments to me.. they want a reaction. All the matters is how I feel about my dog, not them. ;) |
Sorry to hear...:( I would probably just the let comment pass or if you really need to say something, I would paste a nice big fake smile and say "if you have nothing nice to say please keep it to yourself". Good luck with the in-law. |

I usually think...idiot. Who cares what idiots think? Not me. |
I would say, "Have you looked in the mirror recently?" With a smile, of course. :) |
When my sister and her (horrible) boyfriend came round on Sunday and saw Twinkle for the first time her horrible boyf said: 'Why did u buy that horrible ratty looking little thing?' He went on to brag about his bull mastiff x rottweiler and what a 'mans' dog he was. When my hubby asked how much he paid for him and and he said £1200 my hubby asked: 'Wouldn't it have been cheaper to stuff a sock down your trousers?' :D |

If your avatar is one of your babies that he's talking about he is just trying to work a nerve. Let me tell you that dog isn't just a cutie but she is (in my opinion) absolutly beautiful. I often take a longer look at her picture and i would swoop her up in a second. |

I never rise to rude comments either. I've never felt that someone was being truly nasty, how could they? We know the truth and they're just jealous:D Of course I get the old rat comment alot and I just smile and say "what can I say? I'm a rat lover!":D I've never had a comeback from that:D |
Maybe this will help...I heard this joke years ago and I think it might fit here! I just hope I can tell it without getting in trouble! There were 3 southern girls meeting for lunch one day and the first one started bragging about the things her Daddy had given her. She said "My Daddy sent me to the best finishing schools money can buy". The second girl was jealous and the third girl simply said, with a smile, "That's nice". The second girl wouldn't be outdone and had to get her turn in so she said "Well, my Daddy buys me anything I want, he buys me pretty clothes, beautiful jewelry and the finest things money can buy". The first girl snubbed her nose and the third girl said, again with a smile, "That's nice". So, the first two girls wanted to know what the third girl's Daddy had done for her so she looked at them with a shy but firm look and said "My Daddy taught me that no matter how rude or ugly people can be or how much they bragg don't ever stoop to their level...just look at them with a smile and say 'That's nice' instead of **** you!" Maybe your father in law needs a shy but firm southern smile followed by a polite "That's nice"! ;) |

Your FIL sounds so much like my FIL. Mine constantly made rude comments about my horses, my dogs, and then eventually started in on ME. DH told him to shut his trap, and apologized to me, saying if his dad didn't like me he wouldn't pick at me like he did. I finally couldn't take FIL's rude comments any longer and quit going anywhere around him. He finally died, and guess what? I have never missed the rude ole SOB one iota! I don't know how such a hateful man could father such a sweet man as my DH. I do realize he was just trying to get a rise out of me, but that didn't mean I had to accept it. |
I never wanna get even with people so I usually strike them back with a nice compliment. That usually shuts them up and if they say something else rude, well then they know they look like a jerk. |

Love it!! :bravo: |
I have a brother with 6 dogs and at least a few cats. They are not fixed, vaccinated and a few are kept outdoors in a sideyard. he is always making snide remarks about my one little Puppy. She has all of her shots, and everything. I find it interesting that these are the people want to say mean comments about other family member's pets. I'd like to say, "when you start treating your own animals better, then will talk." If it is someone I don't know and they comment, I plainly ignore them. most people love a yorkie, and want to come up to her and pet her. |
I would tell him how much you care about your dogs, and it hurts you to hear those things. And would he try to refrain from talking that way. "You care/love for your dogs your way and I love my dogs my way"! Hope this helps. |
A lot of people don't understand dog lovers. I mean, true dog lovers. I've treated both of my dogs like their a member of the family, I ask if they're hungry and what they're thinking. I spend money on them like I would a child, because to me, my dogs are my children. When I go away on trips I visit a pet store and buy them a gift to give when I come back. They have carriers and multiple leashes and collars, just like a human baby would have multiple blankets and clothes. Some people just see dogs as animals, and it's unfortunate, that they think less of other living beings...but I always tell myself that my dogs are lucky to have a good home, then I go buy them another toy! |
A stranger came up to me just last week, while I was walking with Brooke (yorkie) and Baby & Bitsy (chihuahuas) in their stroller, and wanted to ask questions about owning a yorkie, hair care, feeding, barking, etc.. Then he says, "Yea, I don't like those kind (pointing at my chihuahuas), they have rat faces!", so I looked at him and said "Atleast they don't have a rat attitude like you!" and walked away!! People can be so mean, that's why I like my animals better!! |

However, you do NOT know my FIL...he'd just laugh and then say something even ruder. This IS the man that we moved in with when we moved to this Godforsaken town and I can clearly remember sitting on the couch watching TV with my FIL and DH was reading the newspaper on the other couch. Without even looking my way, my FIL says to me, "Why don't you get off your fat a$$ and go mow the grass!" I was completely shocked and DH never glanced our way nor has he said anything to this day about it. I've learned to develop a thick skin when dealing with my FIL. I only go over there a few times a year and try to avoid them at all costs. I'm amazed that the MIL has put up with him for over 30 years! Oh, and you should hear how he speaks to her!!!!!!! ANYWAY...back to the subject |
