Oiling a yorkie coat When we got Roxy my breeder told us that she uses baby shampoo on all her dogs and then almond oil as a coat conditioner. She seemed to think that the baby shampoo was great and specialty dog shampoos were really just a ploy to make extra $. Anyways, we already had baby shampoo in our house, so we decided that we might as well try the baby shampoo and almond oil rather than confuse ourselves with buying a new fancy puppy shampoo. My question is how am I supposed to use the almond oil? I was thinking that I'm suppsed to just put a bit of the oil in my hands, rub it in between my palms and then work it into my pups coat. My husband seemed to think that we mix the oil in with the shampoo and then wash it all out. Does anyone know about this? Have you used the almond oil before? We live in the UK and don't have access to a lot of those fancy dog shampoos that are available in the US. |
Tell hubby he loses.. You are correct, just rub her coat with it after bathing and blow dry it in. Use just a touch whenever you brush her too. |
Can you tell me where to get almond oil? Is it for dogs? Thanks |
Some people take the oil and put it in warm water and pour it over the coat after you bathe them and then you leave it in. When you oil a coat you will have to bathe them more often since the oil sometimes attracts dirt. |
I have thought about doing this, but I was wondering, Does the oil make them look (oily) like their hair needs washed? or make them feel greesy? |
Most show breeders do this, and here's a thread that discusses oiling the coat: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-coat-oil.html You will also find other threads on this topic in the grooming forum. Yorkie Grooming Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community You say you use baby shampoo on your dog, you should know that dog's hair and skin has a different Ph than human skin and hair, and I don't recommend using human hair products on dogs, even gentle ones. Human products are more acid that a dog's hair can tolerate. Quote:

Does it make them look oily? |

If you are not growing a coat for show the oil may not be the best method. |
