upset by some comments made today
 

:( I dont like when pebbles gets negative attention because of her size.. and I also don't like when people try to say that when you put clothes on an animal they are being abused in some way. :(

These are some of the comments I got today in pebbles new training class by some of the other members, and the clothes one was by the trainer:

She looks like a mop

Is that as big as shes going to get?

The chickens are bigger than she is (then went on about how his dog literally eats live chickens)

I think my dog wants to eat it

From the trainer: He doesn't want to eat it

I'm surprised shes doing so well

:: someone comes over and fusses with pebbles (pretty and expensive) dress and then flips it like its trash or something ::

Don't you think your dog gets hot in those clothes? It's hot

Me: Outside its hot, not indoors, no.. theres airconditioning in here (argh! I know she was trying to get me to take her clothes off! Psh, also, it was a SUMMER dress!)

I know it wasnt very bad but everyone stared at her the entire time really and kept making comments, and the big dog owners kept saying their dog wanted to eat my dog because she "looked like a cake" or something.

Is it wrong of me to want to be treated like every other dog owner and not be antigonized for dressing my dog. I also got picked on because her harness is not standard and plain black or red. It's a pretty one from Glamourdog.com and the trainer almost didn't let me use it--but I proved to her that pebbles walks very well in her harnesses and that they actually work thankyouverymuch. I dunno, I'm just upset. I don't like my baby being compared to a chicken, especially when that chicken is literally being eaten :(

do you get upset by negative comments about your dog or do you just brush it off? I know I shoudn't take it personally, but I do. I'm not going to cancel the class because we did learn stuff and I think the teacher is very good despite her obvious prejudice against dogs wearing clothes

I would just brush it off.... everyone has an opinion, let them speak theirs.... in the end yours is really the only one that matters! ;)

Wow, a lot of those comment were very rude. If someone said that about my dog I would be very upset so you are not overreacting at all. I have gotten comments like this before and it's downright rude to insult someone's dog. Especially saying things like their dog was going to physically hurt your dog. That's NOT FUNNY and it is NOT a joking matter. I wouldn't go back. Do they have a class that is specifically for small dogs somewhere else?

I agree. I would just not even acknowlege the comments but just keep your chin up!!

I must tell you.. years ago I had my pooh in a front carrier.. so I am at a flea market indoor one.. and some guy came from no where and is in my face saying.. your not going to tell me that is a dog are you..
I just looked at him and smiled and said.. No I am not.. it is a cat.. he got p*ssed off with me and walked away..I laughed..

People can really in life be very opinionated.. I have seen it on here matter of fact.. and it is really maddening at times..

Just ignore it.. and you do not have to explain a thing to anyone.. you just enjoy your baby..

It was obviously very rude. Just try to ignore their ignorance & prejudice. Your baby is Gorgeous! They're just jealous!! Hope she's the best student in her training class!!;) what will they say then?:p

:mad::thumbdown that make me so mad ignorant small mind it people why do they mind their business, I think is depend of the time of the month he,he:eek: the other day I was at the post-office dropping a pck for someone and this guy said to me oh that dog can't walk that far I told him you will be surprise after he saw how fast Melody was going he couldn't belive it:D I also was in a car show and this guy told us that our small dog were the only one walking that much :rolleyes:my girls loves to walk:thumbup:, anyway I do get lots of people shaking there heads in a negative way because of my babies but I do let that get me, I get more positive comments I don't really care what they think of me or my babies really who are they anyway:rolleyes:

It took me forever to find this class, especially after the petco class incident, and it's supposedly the best in the area. She comes recommended by my vet and trains service dogs. She was professional in every other aspect. I'm just upset that Pebbles is the only small dog in the class. I doubt I could find a class just for small dogs.. even though I would prefer that.

I get those comments all the time. It is the uneducated, ego centric dog owners and trainers that make them. You should be praised for caring so much that you put time and money into presenting such a wonderful fur baby. Toughen up that skin and blow it off. Those other people are to be pitied.

you know what is funny is that she WAS the best student in the class today.. the other big dogs were all looking at her whenever she passed and not paying attention but she was heeling and sitting on cue!! hahahaha

If the trainer didn't want you to use the harness, what did she want you to use?

You know maybe you need to tell them that you don't appreciate their comments and to keep them to themselves and let them know how it make you feel some people have diarrhea mouth and they don't think before they speak:animal-pa

there are big manly dogs for manly men.. then there are small
companion dogs.. some men seem to think they are tuff guys with their big dogs..
but a real man is secure in who he is and does not try to
hide behind his dog..
i say laugh it off, and do what you want with your dog..
as long as your dog likes her clothes..
but maybe dress down for the next class. i think dresses are a bit much, but i love cute tshirts on small dogs..:aimeeyork

Yeah I just hate the negative attention though.. im not used to it. I also don't like people making me feel strange for dressing my dog. I LOVE dressing her and she is fine with it... I'm not going to stop because someone else doesnt agree with it. I hate when they try to make a case for the dog like im hindering her or something.. grrr...

LOL!!!! I know, it makes you so mad you would like to box their ears. I really got it on another forum about putting clothes on Kayla. Well, I look at it like this, it is my business if I dress her or not, put bows in her hair, or whatever. If you don't like it keep your comments to yourself. I have said and I look at it like this, our home is their home and if you don't like them, then stay home. I can see why some people say they like animals better than some people. Just try to brush it off. People like that are not worth your time.

I got that feeling when that guy kept mentioning his dog killing the neighbors chickens.. I mean, how was that supposed to make me feel?! i was certainly not going to go swooning his way. It just made me pull my baby closer lol.

Also, I DID dress down. LOL it was a casual tshirt dress with polka dots.. not some tutu or something. I should show them and really come dressed up LOL

I get a lot of that stuff at our class too.. but not in a mean way... and he doesnt wear clothes lol. but he is the smallest in his class.. there is a great dane and an alaskan malamute in there!!! but i get comments on his size all the time, and he isn't a small pup for yorkie either!! I just let it go.... ppl can be so ignorant!

she wanted me to use a "gentle leader" which is a harness/collar that goes around the snout and head.. it looks painful even though she said it isnt. I dunno, I didn't like it. I didn't want to use it. Pebbles didn't like it on her when I tried it on before. Plus it looks like your dog is dangerous or something when it is on and thats why you are covering the snout (to keep it from biting). Very unfriendly looking.

Well, I can't really tell you what I would've told them if I were in the situation because this is a family oriented forum ;). I will tell you this though, I most likely wouldn't have been welcomed back which really wouldn't bother me - I wouldn't want to come back anyway and I probably would've walked out.

No one should have to put up with that kind of CRAP. Someone needs to sit them all down and give them a lesson in Respect 101 and let them watch the movie Bambi, specifically pointing out Thumper :rolleyes:.

You really don't need to let people walk all over you, it'll get you nowhere in life.

I can understand initial shock because I guess she really is tiny, but I told all of them before that she was 2.9 pounds... I would think after 15 minutes the staring and comments would stop. They really acted like she wasn't a real dog or something. I hope it goes better he second class and they don't make any more comments. I am there to learn with my baby, not be a subject for negative ignorant comments

I really didn't know if i was overreacting or not as everyone else was acting like it was normal and laughing (even though I wasn't).. but next time if it continues I will try to say something to them, respectfully of course

That's right! And, you can even take the trainer aside and speak to her alone, if you don't want to do the group thing. She is the leader of that class and should foster RESPECT for you AND all the animals, for gosh sakes!

I mean, as a "trainer" she is positively reinforcing the entire class to treat you and little Pebbles with disrespect, by either joining in on it, or doing nothing about the snide remarks. HELLO! I guess she doesn't see her own methods, huh? :rolleyes:

I agree. I think the only thing to help educate them is to let them know that they're being disrespectful. I'm appalled to think that other dog owners could act like that. I've never owned a dog before (I will have my yorkie in november) but I thought there was a natural comraderie amongst dog owners. I wouldn't laugh it off because it's not funny. I'm sorry you had to go through this. I probably wouldn't go back to the class because my pride wouldn't let me. But you are right in not letting them run you out of the class.

exactly. I did stay behind to talk to her, but about something else... i guess she WAS expecting the respect speech because she looked like she had been expecting something else. It hadnt even occured to me lol.

I think I would ask people to keep their comments to themselves! The people in the class don't bother me as much as the trainer chiming in. I would have a talk with him\her or their superviser and let them know that you are paying just like everyone else and you don't enjoying being patronized because of the way you pamper your dog. I don't understand people, if a dog is obviously being well taken care of why would you talk negatively about that. (I could understand if your pup was abused, but then they probably wouldn't even speak up!)

in my experience so far, big dog owners tend to laugh and make a lot of jokes about small dogs and often act like they arent "real dogs" or something. its so rude really
