Possibly stupid question Okay, so this is possibly a stupid question, but I am really bothered by something that happened to me last week and I would love some input. While out running errands, I needed to stop by WalMart to pick up some cat litter. Well, I had Winston with me and it has been about 105 degrees here, so there was no way I was leaving him in my car - even for 5 minutes! So I had him under my arm as I stepped into the store (remember, he's only 11 weeks/1 lb.) and the "Greeter" instantly started wagging his finger at me with this nasty look on his face. The only thing he said to me was "Uh Uh...not allowed" and then turned away. I stood there kinda shocked and said "I'm just going a couple of aisles in - to the pet department." "Nope...it's posted...state law...not allowed". Okay, so my boyfriend and I stepped outside to look for a sign, which there was none, and my boyfriend peeked his head back in and told the guy "there is no sign out here that says we can't bring him in." The jerk just repeated himself, "State law...not allowed" with this screw you kind of attitude. Well, we went home and promptly called to speak to a manager. We were left on hold for 10 minutes before some sales associate came back on and took a message, and a manager never called us back! I would understand if it was a Lab or Great Dane or something, but jeez! I have searched the Oregon laws for anything regarding pets carried into public businesses, and the only thing I can find relates to guide dogs. I guess my question to you all is, what do you know about their ability to basically kick us out of a store for something that is not even posted as a restriction? He acted like I was supposed to go leave Winston in the car, when the police reports in my town have shown at least 5 people a day reported for leaving dogs in the car in that same parking lot!!! Thanks for letting me vent. :) ~H |
Isn't it frustrating that so many places won't allow our little ones in? Maybe you could get a purse type carrier (since he's so small, no one would even know what you have in there), and then you could take him places without being yelled at. Sorry that happened to you :( |
I'd put him in a purse or carrier, and they would never see you coming. I do it all the time. |
WalMart is famous for not allowing dogs! Just keep a carrier in the car and sneak him in! :D |
I take Deegan with me to Wal-Mart all the time, but he's in a purse carrier and nobody really notices him much. A couple times I was in the middle of the store and a worker or two may have seen him, but nobody said anything to me. Then this one time, after I had paid and everything the greeter did see him. She didn't say anything, but she just kinda gave the look as to say, oh - he's not allowed! But I didn't care because I was finished shopping anyway. I can see for a larger dog (like one that you can't fit in a carrier), but for small little ones like ours.... I don't see the big deal either. |
I have had the same problem with Walmart. I live in NY State and I think it is because they sell food that they do not allow pets. As much as I understand it, it always bothered me too because when I had Raisin, she was better behaved than any kid, though that was not the problem. Sue |
It's because of the food - anyplace that sells food, is not supposed to let animals (except service) into the establishment. Some do, but it is a law - probably a state law, and I think most, if not all, states have them. |
I think that if dogs are not allowed, it should be 'clearly' posted on the door! My wal-mart is strange though... It's one of those Super Walmarts that sell food. I have never tried to take Esme there because I am too embarrased that someone will tell me to leave. Also, Esme is one of those yorkies that is hard to miss. She LOVES attention and wants EVERY single person within 10 feet of her to tell her she's cute. Not to mention the fact that she doesn't want to be carried, she wants to walk on the floor... and a bag is unthinkable! In my walmart, I have seen a woman with a chihuahua in her arms, and he was pretty big. I also saw a MAN WITH A BIRD ON HIS SHOULDER in the food aisle. If you ask me, thats worse then a dog! No one seemed to care either... So, I think it depends on the people at your store... |
. i live in ny and i also got kicked out of walmart... oh well, was going to spend at least $ 100.00 that day. oh well, their loss... |
I see dogs at walmart alll the time...so i don;t understand!! I got kicked out of soooo many places...heheh, next time just put in under your shirt to get in..:P I can understand why dogs are not allowed everywhere, i lot of people are alergic and even don;t like dogs, i heard there's even dog phobia out there. We cannot force them to like dogs just because we do (and believe me, i wish we could) And about size...as a small and large breed owner i would be outraged if small dogs were allowed everywhere and my lab wasn;t, so think that is why they just won't allow any pets period. |

I know your frustration. I had the samething happen to me.... :( But on the flip side of all this, Would I want to go shopping and be greeted by a dog that my not be as nice as ares?? And if they let one in they have to let all of them in. Then you have to think if you have a male in the store he could hike and do his Business!!!!! What if that was a product you were going to buy you bring it home and discover it-- what would you do then "Call the Manager" So this is such a catch 99. But since the manager didn't call you back you can call the reginal (sp?) manager and that number is posted at the customer service desk. You were entitled a call !!!! |
Leave them at home Quote:

The same exact thing happened to me. The guy was so rude and I was not happy after that but I vowed to myself that my kids would be going to Wally World with me...lol. Now I carry them in the other door where the nice person is and often use a carrier if I'm in a hurry. |

LOL....we're gonna make you a secret agent! :D Francie |
I just lie and tell people she's a service dog in training...which isn't COMPLETELY a lie...she will be soon, in like 3 months..hehe...they back off when I say that. Plus I sneak her into the movies, restaurants. You name it, Coco's been there. I place her in her carrier and she just chills in there. I'm lucky though because she doesn't make any noise at all. |

Chewy goes everywhere with me. people in my neighborhood love to see him and if he's not with me, shopkeepers always ask when he'll come back to visit! If I am travelling a lot in a day, i just put him in the carrier and NO ONE know he's in there. people just think it's a purse. |
I think th eonly time when it shouldn't be allowed to bring dogs along is when there is food being served to people out in the open not because i think this way but because some people are just freaky like that. Other than that they should go anywhere. I was at the mall one time with Ruby in a carrier, yes a carrier, and the security after walking the mall for about an hour told me pets weren't allowed , she was nice in how she said it and was petting Ruby but I went about my business as if nothing was said to me. If you want my $$$$$$ and business you want my furbaby. :animal36  |
I know it frustraing but theres hardly any place that will allow you to have dogs here. Ive seen some people have their little dogs at places like home depot but thats it. |
I was kicked out of the Walmart up in CT because I had Rika with me. She was in a bag and everything. It irked the crap out of me. If I didn't rely on Walmart for pretty much everything, I'd boycot them! lol |
I have taken Preslee into our Walmart with me but she was in my purse. I didnt know what else to do with her so I emptied out my purse except for my money and then stuck her in there with the zipper open. LOL Other than that if I have the dogs with me I usually have my extra set of keys on me cause Recon is famous for locking me out of the car. I usually lock the car and leave it running. But that is only when I am just going to be 2 minutes. Its safe enough here to do that. Recon would tear some one apart if they touched his car too. With my car you can have the alarm on even when it is running so that is an added plus too. |
My family would not believe I am standing up for Wal-Mart but the state law says that anywhere food is sold or served, animals are not allowed. It's in most states but I'm not sure if it is in yours. I'm sure you were upset but I can't tell you how many times I have turned around and taken Crystal home and then gone back to shop in a store that I know I couldn't take her. Also they are afraid if a child should pet a dog(no matter how small) and the dog bites, they may have to put out some loot and you know for sure Wal Mart isn't interested in giving anything to anybody but Wal Mart. Just had to vent too!! Ha. Poor baby you should make her a t-shirt that says yorkies don't like Wal-Mart. No a better one Poop on WalMart |

I can take Crystal in the bank. One day I had her in my purse and everyone started laughing. The people said she'd peek out, and put her head down, then do the same thing over and over. Kinda like Sully's teapot avatar. |
yeah, well...Walmart makes the state law, don't they? i'm so glad we don't have any in NY. They were going to open one here and everyone protested so they decided not to. I take archie everywhere, and no one cares if I'm holding him. Some stores let him in when he's on a leash. |
Wal-Mart I work at Wal-Mart and no animal except service animals are allowed in the store. It has to do with food being in the stores. I've seen some people sneak dogs in (my self included) but as long as the hold them and don't make a big deal about the dogs being with them our associates don't say much. |

I have a purse carrier now, and I do plan on going back, it was just the principle of the whole thing that has been bugging me now. I think that if I get any more crap next time I will demand to see the manager and ask him exactly what state law they are referring to. |
