Can a Yorkie be 18 pounds? I just got a yorkie for my Mother-in-law...it has papers...I believe through CKC. Anyhow. When it was 13-14 weeks old, it was 6 and 1/2 pounds. Her vet said this yorkie could get to 18 pounds! Is this true? If so, she cannot handle the weight and is going to find a new home for it. In all of the sites I have visited, it looks like that is not possible except in the past in the 1800's. Help. thanks! Lauriea |

They can be 18 lbs. I've seen even larger. There are some big boys & girls here on YT. Just don't plan to show a Yorkie that large. I'm sure people have opinions about not breeding a Yorkie that large too. |
I am pretty sure a yorkie can get that large...Sammi tips the scales @ 13lbs and she is 20 months old :) |
I think it would be considered a Silky. |
They can get up to 18lbs....although I doubt that he/she will be that big but probably aroun 13-14lbs..I would think because they say double the weight at 12 weeks. |

The shelters have seen many yorkies that weren't the right size. :( Muffin was about 12 lbs and I could hold her in one arm easily. |
oo i didnt see that she was going to give him away! poor baby. please try to get her to reconsinder. whats the problem with a little bigger like 10lbs?? they are still small enough for a carrier and big enough so they are more "sturdy" and harder to hurt themselves severly. pleasse please try to get her to reconsider. |
I really would hate for the puppy to have to go just because of its size. Several people on YT have larger yorkies, and they are just adorable. I bet if you asked them, they would tell you that the larger ones are sometimes better, because they don\'t have some of the problems that the smaller ones do. I am really at a loss for words.................when you get a pet, it should be a life time commitment. |
size I would guess around 12 to 14 pounds. Some breeders breed from larger stock and get oversized in the line. I do understand having a problem caring for a larger Yorkie if you are older. I have several elderly friends who do not have the strength to pick up a ten pound,let alone 18 pound dog of any breed. Having a 4 or 5 pounder makes it easier for them. Do the Yorkie a favor and find a home where he will be happy and size is not important. |
Although I am positive your yorkie is going to be on the larger side, I think vets always over estimate. You shouldn\'t get rid of him because of his size though! |
Now that I reread your post more carefully, I notice that the dog belongs to your mother in law who may not be able to handle a heavy dog... I guess it makes sense that a smaller yorkie would be better for her... I hope everything works out! |
