Some people don't deserve a dog.... Last night Reggie had a vet appointment...there is a golden retriever there. She is older and HUGE...weighs 143...she had chewed herself to pieces...to the BONE on one leg. I saw it. Apparently first time at this office...asking background questions. Did you bring shot records? Guy - huh no. Girl - do you know when she got at least her last rabies? Guy - uh no...she was seen at Banfield one time. Is she on any flea preventative. Guy...ah...yeah. Girl - what? Guy...hmmm, I don't know but something...so the conversation continues like this. I think he doesn't want them to know...the answers to these questions is really no or none. It's pretty obvious the dog gets no care. He gets taken back in a room...then me and Reggie in another...the back door of the examing room is open and goes into a hallway...so I can hear the vet talking to this guy...what they need to do for her leg...test her for heart worms...etc. Then I hear the guy ask...how much is this all gonna cost? Vet...I'll go get you an estimate. So I hear that amount...120 bucks. Guy is okay with that. She's telling him...the dog is like this because she isn't on flea preventative...he only agrees to buy her ONE month of preventative. He says he gives her flea baths...which I doubt...the vet tells him...they are really ineffective...might kill what's on her...but doesn't deter the new ones. I hear her talk about the dog's weight...asking what kind of food she gets. Guy...I don't know but we just got a big bag. Now they are very considerate here...not to insult someone....so she says...well, when you get home...check the brand and please put her on something like purina...there are alot of foods out there that aren't really good foods for them. Purina would be good and cost about the same as some of the others. I am certain that vet felt frustrated...and knew from looking at that dog...no one really cared about her. She's probably thrown out back and never thought of. I really think the only reason she was taken to the vet yesterday....that hole in her leg. I really think he'd have put her down...if the bill had been too high, (or opted out of treatments)..perhaps the intent was to put her down and he couldn't. I didn't think 120 was bad...she got a rabies shot, her wound cleaned and dressed, medicine for that, medicine for her infected skin, tried to get a stool sample, and a month of flea preventative. Anyway...that's the jist....but I sat there thinking....YOU SHOULDN'T OWN A DOG....if you don't want to care for one...you shouldn't own one. |
I agree with you. Poor baby:( |
I agree 100 % with you . |
that guy is an idiot |
awww poor doggie .. sounds painful :( |
That's just so sad.:( |
oh man!!! i tell ya,, why why why!!! this sickens me :mad: |
So very, very sad. Labs are wonderful family dogs. Our Abby was just a kind soul who watched out for the kids as they grew up. I can't imagine treating something that give unconditional love so horribly. |
Sad and your right they dont deserve a dog. Poor thing! |
Unfortunately, This is the way some people treat their dogs. They do not care . I have seen dogs placed in side yards and fed only leftover foods. They have many of them, and then several little dogs inside. They do not ever take them in to a vet, or do they bother to fix any of them... The dogs have babies.... Some people just do not care! They look at the dogs as "animals' and not pets.. :thumbdown |
I know vets get a lot of bad press here, about being "greedy," but I honestly don't know how they do it. It would be so hard to see dogs kept in that kind of condition. I wonder why they finally sought treatment, was the "smell" from the wound bothering them? |

He certainly didn't want to purchase more than one application of flea preventative... |
People like that do not deserve to own a dog or another other pet. |
Being a Nurse, I wish they had the same policy with animals as we do with humans. . .if we suspect neglect. . . .report it immediately!!! This should be reported, it's blatent abuse. . .poor baby and labs are the sweetest dogs!!!! I feel so bad for him::(:(:( and it makes me so mad, why have him????(:mad::mad: |
It's sad to hear stories like this.I agree that some people are not fit to have animals..or children...with the lack of care they tend to not give them:(:thumbdown One thing thou..even though there was a lack of care to this poor baby, at least he felt some compassion to have her looked at for her injury, maybe this will open him up on better treatment for his pet. I hope so at least. Some people do not view having a dog as anything special to them it is just an animal, nothing special at all:( |
This happens way too often. Same with some people having children..I see how some people talk or treat their children in stores and it hurts my heart.. |
How very sad :( |
i totally agree! |
I guess I will never understand why people get animals and do not take care of them. |
Your right if you can't afford to take care of your pet you shouldn't have one. I go to a clinic and an older vet that charges a quarter of the usual fee. It's to bad the vet couldn't take him away from the man for abuse. |
Poor doggie that is so sad:( I don't know what makes them think it's okay to own a dog |

Prayers for that poor dog. Maybe I treat mine TOO well, but I'd rather be a responsible and compassionate pet owner than just someone who lets an animal suffer because of my own ignorance. |
So sad :(Wot a sad story! My mum has a golden retriever who is 13 now and suffers from arthritis and also had to have a cancerous growth removed recently.* Treatment for both of these has been very costly - but that just isnt an issue because he a much loved FAMILY MEMBER. how someone can have so little regard for the welfare of a member of their family is beyond me. My heart goes out to that poor dog.* |
I think 120 was really good for everything they did. My vet would have probably doubled that bill..with the heartworm test and rabies shot and exam and everything.. Thats horrible how that dog was treated. It's similar to how I saw a lot of dogs treated in Puerto Rico when I was there a few years ago. Most of the dogs roam the streets and have 3 legs because they get hit by cars. My cousins boyfriend told me that most people there see dogs as just dogs, and they stay outside rain or shine...Most get them, kennel them and thats how they stay until they die..It's awful. |
 ... I can't believe what I am reading ...... that poor Baby .... :( |
I TOTALLY AGREE. This happens way more than we want to believe. :( |

I most certainly agree with the majority here ..in every town , everywhere you will find people just like this who think animals are disposable . Pets cost money . You need to provide care for them , you need to walk them , feed them , train them , love them . It is called RESPONSIBILITY . Your story is repeated over and over again and the pets suffer because of it ..and yes , NEGLECT is ABUSE . |
I agree. I know that we are in some crunched economical times. And some people are really being hit hard by them. However, for the sake of your dog let someone take him that might be able to provide healthcare and proper nutrition. The dog also needed to be on heartworm prevention. There is no telling the true medical condition that the poor thing was actually in. It is very sad. Around here, our local HS provides free rabies shots, spay and neutering for those who cannot afford it. It is local vets that are donating their time for the sake of dogs and cats in this county. Our vet whom loves small animals and has a large practice. If someone comes in with a sick animal and cannot afford to pay, she sets up a payment plan for them and treats the animal anyway. I know this, because I set up their computer systems. I really admire her for that. |
