whats too hot for yorkies to be outside? chloe is 3lbs and when i take her for walks within 5 minutes shes panting and it makes me nervous im scared she'll get too hot. how long should i keep her outside for and whats too hot? |
Krissie is still a puppy and has a lot of black on her back. And then there is my Maltese that are stark white. I can feel of Ollie or Millie and they are fine, but Krissie's fur will be sooo hot. I am here in Georgia, so it is hot and humid here. I don't let Krissie out but about 15 minutes every 2 hours. And trust me, she is ready to come in after 15 minutes. 90-95 degrees here. Peace and Love, |
I don't take Archie out to walk if the temp is high 80s or 90s. If I do take him out on an 80s day, it's usually after 8 p.m. (dusk here). Even on moderately warm days, he starts to pant (and sometimes refuses to walk -- at which time I pick him up) if we are out for more than 1/2 hour. He's getting more and more silvery on his back, but his coat is thick, so I think he gets heated up pretty quickly. BTW: He's 2 and 1/2 at 5 pounds. Just be careful with your baby -- if she's panting, that's telling you to wind things up. Give her fresh, cool water when she comes in (I drop a couple ice cubes in Archie's). |
Well .... mine loves to be outside when it's warm ..... when she gets hot she comes inside and lays down on the cold tile ..... it has been hot here lately .... I think it depends on how long her fur is too ..... Mostly she will go in the shade and she has plenty of cold water out there too .... she loves to watch my daughter play ... or maybe she is just a nosy :aimeeyork .... ;) |
Well, we're in Texas....100+ temps right now. So, I agree with very short periods of time, in the shade, lots of water and NO walking on concrete or pavement!! A little fresh air is great, but probably best in the morning or evening when it's cooler. So, I think you're smart to be careful. |
Wish we had warmer weather here in England. It's done nothing but rain.:daisy: Hugs Shirl, Katie and Suzi :2puppy: |
My 2 are not puppies anymore, but I still limit their time outside. Yesterday they were out for about an hour...... in the EARLY morning. Then again in the evening, they went out on the patio with us for about 30 minutes. (of course they went out to pee a couple of times... and that was only a couple of minutes). |
heat Tinies can not be walked in the heat for any amount of time..IMO They can run out to potty and come back..IMO Frankly, it is too much sress on any Yorkies heart to be overheated...I would be very careful...I live in south Florida..mine follow me outside for a couple minutes..but are never walked in the heat.. |
Bailey goes for her "long" walk early in the morning before the sun starts to bake. After that - no matter what the temperature - she goes for short walks (about 40 to 50 yards) (to pee) about every 3 to 4 hours. I can't tolerate the heat and we come in as soon as she is done doing her business. |
This is an interesting thread. I take Franklin and Maggie out for a long walk in the mornings, before it gets hot. Then we go out every 2-3 hours for potty time and we're usually out for 5-10 minutes. Lately Franklin has been a terror ("terrible twos") so I've been taking him on long walks in the middle of the day to tire him out. I wonder if this is too harmful? He usually comes back in, drinks some water and lays down on the cold tile. Then 5 minutes later he's up and full of energy again. Sheesh! |
No walks here in Arizona in the summer....Bummer !!! But we do go in our backyard...It's concrete ( Az landscaping) and I have towels and umbrellas all around...We have an inground pool also with and umbrella where they stand...They have their own little pool and also go in our pol with us....They aren't exposed to the hot sun in the summer too much...Although, they occasionally like to lay in it ????? That's only for about 2 minutes and in we go....HOT HOT HOT:eek: |
Pepper is alot like me. He doesn't want to go out when it's hot. :) |
Sophie does not do well in the heat. She pants and drools. So we do not spend much time outdoors when it is in the mid-80's or over. However, if I am outdoors watering flowers or doing something in the yard for a short time, I will bring her out, and she will lay in the shade.:) |
Buddy get's walked 4x a day no matter how hot it is. He's trained to go outdoors only so this is a must. I make sure he dosen't overdue it and as soon as he's done his thing we're right back inside. He flops on the marble tile in the dinning room as soon as we come back indoors. |
I'm like Carol and Buddy - My girls aren't tinies so I do walk them even in Houston heat around my apartment complex. I have a back patio with a tent and Fake Grass so they can 'go' there.... but we do 2 walks a day - 1 in the early am and another when I get home from work. They have me totally trained - I can't skip the walks due to the heat or I'll see 2 accusing sad faces all night long :D My apt complex has lots of grass and trees but I try to walk them on the sidewalks due to the 'other' pets that we share grass with... so we can't avoid the concrete......I tried it barefoot and it's not too bad ..... We are out and back in under 10 minutes with the heat....just enough time for them to be happy and me to not feel guilty. |
