Questions about coat color changing.
 
I don't know too much about Yorkies..but Yo-yo is my very first yorkie and it seems to me that her black coat on her back is changing color to a bluish grayish color already (her roots that is). Is that normal? She's only 4 1/2 months old. She's very cottony too. Will her coat change to Silky or is it still too early to tell? She doesn't look like a Yorkie to me either. I kinda think she's a Silky Terrier, but the breeder assured me that shes 100% Yorkie.

My picture of Millie is at 16 weeks, and her head was already quite silver when we got her at 14 weeks. The back of her neck is getting noticeably silver this week, as is the tops of her legs and her tail. She is 18 weeks tomorrow, so about the same age as yours. I'm not sure about the texture.

yorkie come in all shape, form and size. i have 1 that has a cottony coat and not that he is 16 months old he still has a cottony coat...and the breaking of color is completely normal!

YUP ..... Maya started to change colore early too .... she is now silver/blue and used to be brown and black ......

Don't worry it will take a while to be completely grown out ....

A cottony coat will never turned as a silky coat . What makes you think she is a silky Terrier ?

She has a longer nose than those that i've seen and her body is a bit longer too. I dunno...she just doesn't look like a normal yorkie...I think the breeder got mad when I called her and asked her if she's really a yorkie. The breeder i bought her from didn't actually breed her. She said she picked her up from a friend who bred her in Arkansas.

pics of her back hairs changing color already. I hope she stays somewhat dark though. I'm so confused with her.

Several Yorkies have long nose and long body . It don't mean they are not Yorkies .

I looked at the pictures and don't see nothing wrong with her . She is developing as a yorkie pup should do . I had one that I thought he would stay black and gold but at 16 months he began to change colors , another one started to change colors at 12 weeks old .

Really? I've been reading all over the net and it all said the body color doesn't change until atleast 6 months old. Thats why I was so confused.

that looks like how MeiLing looked at that age...now her silver has turned into a steel blue! and still has black on the ends...hehe

a silver color could change to steel blue?? wow. I had no clue. I thought they can only get lighter. I should have done way more research before I got her. Now I'm more confused. lol

As I always said Mother Nature doesn't know how to read and don't go on internet . When I had my first Yorkie , I was confused too . You know in books or internet a person have to take some and leave some . Yorkie breed can be a very confusing for new owner . One of the reasons I love this breed is that you don't really know how the pups will turn as adults , so amazing to see the change of colors .

Thanks, I guess I'll just have to wait until she's fully grown and fully changed colors. I'm gunna try to grow her hair out to see if her hair grows all the way down like a yorkie..cuz i'm still confused if shes a yorkie or a silky terrier. I don't really trust the breeder I got her from now. I got her for really cheap compared to most people and now I see why. lol

The Yorkshire Terrier is a breed too much popular for its own good .

well if she was a silky then her hair would really be silky...hehe...they don't call them silky for nothing!

Both of mine also turned many shades before they decided what color they wanted to be. Shelby (my little girl) is really a steel color and Seymour is also, but his is a much darker shade. They both went thru a really odd stage that I wondered if they were "ugly ducklings"!! :p As far a noses and bodies...... Shelby has short legs and a fluffy coat. I use good shampoo products on her coat, and a small amount of oil, and it looks beautiful after grooming (I also am careful about too much blow-drying). Seymour has a petite face and a longer nose. His legs and body are longer than Shelby's. His coat is silky and grows like crazy. Some Yorkies hair just don't grow that fast or full..... but actually many keep them trimmed shorter around the body.... easier to groom AND to dress them in sweaters & clothes (which is sometimes needed.... mine get cold in the winter :D).

Don't be worried...... it looks like your baby is a typical Yorkie ..... and I would LOVE to see a pic of Yo Yo's face.......... I'll bet she is ADORABLE!!!!!

When we got our adorable little black and tan puppy we fell in love. By the time he began to change color we wouldn't have cared if he turned purple! He is now a "blonde" and he is THE most beautiful yorkie in the whole world!!:)
Your little one is beautiful! Enjoy her!
We adopted one that has the longer nose and he is taller than most of the yorkies we have seen. He is beautiful and such a sweetie!

What you describe is normal. Did you see the parents when you purchased your dog? I always make sure I see the parents before purchasing a Yorkie. That way, there are no suprises (as a rule) in coloring or size.

Krissie is growing out like Millie. Her roots are silver at 16 weeks old. She has a silky coat. I didn't know that their coats changed. My maltese blew their puppy coats and they got a little wave in their hair. I am just learning about yorkies. But it is so much fun!

Nope didn't get to see the parents. Unfortunately the breeder I went to said that my yo-yo is from a friend of hers that she picked up in another state. I should have done some research on the breeder, but I was naive. I think she might be a broker now. Hopefully she's not picking up puppies from puppy mills and selling them. But she did have 4 beautiful yorkies of her own.

...... to ensure a good coat, you might want to consider her diet. Sometimes a good premium food. Salmon oil is an important ingredient for coats. We feed Nutro Ultra. I know that some peeps here do a great raw diet...... and it isn't like it sounds. You can buy air dried raw dog food........ it looks like beef jerky. You may want to inquire about it... and search the threads on it.

My baby Darla's hair is turning silver on the roots too. Her's starting changing when she was about about 5 months, and she's now 6 months.

Yorkies change sooo much as they are growing up it is unreal! Misty is 7 months, has long legs, but very straight, thank God, a long body, and silky hair that is turning silver. If your dogs hair is thick and Not Silky it is probably a Cotton Coat. They are thicker and not straight!

Thanks! Right now we are feeding her Blue buffalo, but her vet said to feed her either Eukanuba, Royal Canin, or Science diet cuz those are the best. We'll probably change her food again soon.

nope wasn't planning to breed her, but I saw these 2 silky haired Yorkies with long flowy hair and fell in love and thats why I decided to get a Yorkie. I really was hoping she would have silky hair.

yes the silver will change again...the silver on her head has turn to a light tan...i am hoping it gets darking on her head like her sire...hehe...only time can tell!

sounds like she may be a broker...especially if she picked up a puppy in arkansas...that is another puppy mill state!
