What happens to the pet if the owner dies? OK I hate to be morbid, but my best friend are doing our preplanning of our last wishes so that our children don't have to deal with last wishes. She told me not to leave her any thing behind she does not like dogs. This has me thinking about what will happen to your babies if no one like family or friends wants them. I told her no matter what don't take them to the human society, find them homes for me. Is there a business or rescue that deals with taking care of pets after their owners pass away and handle the money to take care of the pet. I never heard of one. Have any of you? |
Food for thoughts...I also want to know. |
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: I also want to know. I have never thought about that. I have heard of people leaving their money to their animals.. but I don't know who takes care of them...Bobbi |
I'm not sure if there is or not, but it's something to look into. Believe it or not, I just had this same talk with our son who lives here with us. (he's 20) and asked him if something happened to his Dad and I would he want to keep Abby and Daisy? He said that of course he would. I reminded him that they require lots of care, grooming, vet visits, special diet, walks, pottying, etc... and I told him who I wanted to have them if he found that it was more than he could handle or if he moved somewhere that he couldn't take them. I suppose I should inform that person too, huh? ;) I've heard of some folks here leaving a few thousand dollars in their will to the person who cares for their animals. It is something that needs to be thought about, just as we do with our children. |
You can put stipulations into your will for your pets and who will have custody of them. I would talk to your Attorney, they can give you the best advise. |
Is there anyone that you would want to have her and that she really likes, too? You would need to include in your legal documents what you want to do. If there is no one you would want to have her or does not want her, then I would probably seek out a yorkie rescue. I would also leave a book with her particular likes, dislikes, her veterinarian records, etc.:) |
Interesting! Never thought about it but we have a close knit family and we all love animals so they would never give our pets away! If anything its the last thing to remember your family member by! My mom passed away Dec 2008 and we didn't even think about giving her cat away because she loved her so much... |
I imagine rescues do that sort of thing. Joey's breeder says that she will take Joey back at anytime in his life, and find a home for him. I personally wouldn't want to be involved in a business that did this sort of thing, just look after pets who had inherited money, how could you know if they were interested in the pet, or the money? People should make provisions for this, and find a rescue or friend who would take care of their pet if needed. |
I have no one I would have to have her give them away. My family is not close and not a one would step up...so I would have to leave money and/or create a name for the guardian on the will paper stuff... so at the moment at a lost..:( |
I have this already figured out. I had mentioned to my youngest daughter, if for whatever reason she could not take Buddy, she is to get on YT and find him a forever new home. This is the only way I could rest in peace. |
My sons are completely aware, it would be like Leona Helmsely....everything goes to the dogs!!!:D Seriously though, I have made arrangements for Ruby and Reno if something were to happen to me. I don't like to think about it :( but everyone should. I'm sure our rescue would accept any yorkie in this situation. |
great idea... I will put this website in my will for my friend...and maybe get an adoption questionaire going!!!! |

Seriously, I struggle deeply with this. If something happened to both my hubby and me - I don't KNOW who I want my babies to go to. We would provide money, so that wouldn't be an issue. Honestly, there are a few people on YT who I think I'd probably want them to go to...who are "dog people" in the same/similar way that I think I am... And, although my mother-in-law would also be a choice - she's getting up there in age, and I'd hate to burden them with 2 dogs.... |
