annoying pet peeve. Lately I've had so many people asking me if my Paddy is a Silky terrier. I'm like no he's a yorkie. And they're like Really??! but his coat is so silky?? And then someone else said his coat looked too silky for a yorkie. Am I crazy or isn't an appropriate Yorkie coat supposed to be silky?? I read the yorkie coat thread and it says that. And aren't silky terriers usually bigger than 5 lbs with much bigger faces? Now, I have nothing against Silky Terriers as I am sure they are great dogs, but I really think Paddy looks like a Yorkie! I don't know, I guess it just one of my little pet peeves when even people who own certain types of dogs seem to know absolutely nothing about their breed. Anyone else get these comments?? |
Same here! I was in Petsmart and a woman with a tiny Yorkie insisted that Pebbles was a Silky because she was too large @ 10 lbs. I was so sad/mad that she kept going on about it with her little tiny "Barkly" who was all of 3.5 lbs. She "expertly" told me the standard was 3 to 7 lb and since my baby was 10 lbs. he could not be a Yorkie! I wanted to smack her! I hate know it alls. |
I hate it when someone asks "what kind of Yorkie is that...a standard or teacup?" I always say there is only one kind of Yorkie!! |
I know it can be annoying answering the same questions from people, especially when they seem so rude. I usually take the opportunity to try and give them a friendly but brief education about yorkies, size and standard. I also at that time try to educate them about where not to get their yorkie or any dog from, puppymills, byb's, off the internet, etc. |
People always ask me if my little one (gray one) is a mix and I say NO! |
Punkin/Piper Mom, You said your little gray one? Just courious if you could show a pic since I KNOW the picture in MY head is all wrong for what your baby must be. Is the gray color that throws people in the black/silver back? My Tank is still very black and I constantly have to defend him, to many question his coloring. |

I've learned over time that alot of people just don't know dog breeds very well and their comments are really innocent. I have had labs for years, one of them was way over standard in weight. He weighed 120lbs, I was walking him around our neighborhood and someone came up to me to pet him and asked me if he was a rottie. I think I just about laughed, he was a black lab.. solid black. So, looking very perplexed I just replied and said, No he is a labrador. LOL I still laugh about it, but I figured this guy really didn't know much about different dog breeds to think a solid black dog was a rottie to begin with. As far as someone with a yorkie arguing with the pp, thats just plain rude. |
I've had some annoying questions too, the best one was in a Starbucks drive thru, some lady was already being rude trying to cut us off in line, then asked me if Duke was some totally off the wall type of dog, I can't remember what she called him but it was something or some kind of breed I had never heard of in my life. I guess it just goes along with owning them... |
People keep asking if Jake is a puppy, or call him a puppy.. grrr. And ask if he will get any bigger. NO HE WONT and he's not a puppy look at his greying coat! baah. Why do people have to come up and bother? Its a dog. Maybe if I had an ugly dog they wouldn't bother haha :p |
I guess we will just have to make allowance for the none-Yorkie folk eh. They obviously don't know what a joy they are and are soo missing out. Hugs Shirl:bee: |
I to get that all the time. Maggie has red leg in her genes and a slow growing somewhat coarse coat. I have been asked if she was a norwich terrier, a australian terrier. I just say no she's a Yorkie. If they actually knew what those 2 terriers looked like they would see that there are big differences even if they are similar in color. Then Dante weighs in at 10.5 lbs and people ask if he's a Silky. i just say nope he's a Yorkie he just ate too much as a pup. Tis leaves them looking confused. Now Friday I have people asking me all the time what kind of dog is she. But she is only 4 months old so they aren't sure I guess. I think that when people think of Yorkies they have this picture in their head and anything that doesn't look like that picture just isn't a Yorkie to them. As far as the lady with the 3.5 lb Yorkie arguing with megansmomma, I would have told her then obviously you need to research Yorkies a little better. |
Shirl - that's right! Excuse them for their ignorance!!! If you haven't experienced a Yorkie, you haven't experienced life to the fullest! Try to use it as a teaching moment....:) |
Just some info we can throw back to someone who insults our dogs........... from the "Dog Bible, The Definitive Source for all Things Dog" by Kristin Mehus-Roe, page 344, it shows a Silky Terrier and weights are 8 to 10 lbs standard, erect ears, looks very much like a yorkie EXCEPT the face is a little larger because of the Australian Terrier genes. The body is longer than the dog is tall, while a Yorkie has a square body, and there are differences in the bone shape of the heads. Silkys have a strong, long and WEDGE shaped head with a flat skull that is slightly longer than the muzzle. The yorkie has a small, flat skull: the muzzle is tapered with a small black nose. Yorkies have long hair on the muzzle, while Silkys have short hair on the muzzle. Also a Silky is calmer and sweet as it's activity level is moderate, while Yorkies is high. For a real kick, you could tell them their doggie looks like a Chinese Crested Powderpuff. Let them go home and look it up HA! Honestly memorize the book title and throw that out. See we can be experts too!:eyetearss |

I meet too many people like the one megansmomma met here on the upper west side, that think they know everything and will argue with you. So it is difficult. I actually had a lady with three very fat pugs tell me I was walking my dog too fast when it was hot the other day. I was like...actually this is really slow for him, perhaps you should walk your dogs a little faster. ;) |
LOL Sometimes I don't mind if I am rude. I figured they were rude to make the dumb statement in the first place as I didn't ask for their opinion. :) I have been told that one of my Yorkies is not a yorkie.....but both are. They don't understand that the color changes as they get a bit older and some take on a different look. Both of mine are AKC and I have their family tree back 5 generations. They are pure yorkies and even if they weren't, they are my babies! :aimeeyork ARF! :aimeeyork ARF! |

This irritates me, too  Maybe we should ask these people if their children are "teacup" babies...or if their child is above average size, we should "inform" them that they must NOT be children/human  |

I know it is annoying and at time downright rude of people who insult our beautiful Yorkies. However, they don't know enough about breeds, and truthfully, ignorance is bliss. I'd find it hard not to laugh in their faces. because they believe they are right, and are not. The joke is on them. :D |
Otis is not standard. He's 9 pounds, black, cotton coated, with flop ears. People who arent' educated on yorkie's always ask me that too. One lady told me he WAS NOT a yorkie! I just laugh and say I think he's the most handsome yorkie I've ever seen. Don't let what people say get you down. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks of my boy, but I'll probably always get those comments because he's big. |
I've so enjoyed reading this whole thread. Thank you all!:D I know people can be annoying. I've heard it all over the years, too. |

btw I have never gotten so many responses on a post before. Clearly this a very popular issue and a common frustration to all Yorkie owners. |
You struck a nerve among Yorkiedom! :D |
I get that comment alot too. Snickers is about 10.5 lbs and is long in the body with a big black nose ( I think he is just perfect). I just say no he is 100 % yorkshire terrier, just big. I also tell them that if there was a standard to humans ALOT of people would also be over standard. |
I think people just do not understand what pure bread means. Most people assume that if the dog does not resemble a show dog than it is not pure breed. Not every dog matches the standard and that why we neuter them. I think Yorkies are supposed to have silky coats. Maybe the person who made the remark only saw pet quality Yorkies with cottony coats and assumed that was the standard for the breed. I use to think that myself until I joined this forum. I thought the cottony coats were silky because their coats felt silky to me. I would never make those types of comments towards someone's dog. I know how this feels. I had a pet quality Bichon that loosely resemble the breed's standard. People always asked me what he was. My mother took my Bichon to Petsmart, and a man told my mother he was ugly and had a big head. My mother told the man he is beautiful to me and walked away. |
The funniest thing I've encountered was a few days ago I was at a mall and had Tiki sleeping in a Sherpa carrier, kinda hard to see in thru the black mesh sides. A young girl saw her and yelled to her brother to "come see the guinea pig" in my bag. I said it's my puppy, and she said naa, it's a guinea pig. Just then Tiki woke up and raised her head, excited to see kids, and the kids said, oh you're right, it is a puppy. Hummm, maybe it's time for Tiki to get a haircut....http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...new2/laugh.gif |
Ignorant remarks from other Yorkie Owners? My Pet Peeve's come from un-educated Yorkie Owner's or a Friend of another Yorkie Owner - I get it all the time, "My Friend has a Teacup Yorkie that's only 3 lb.s and it does'nt look like Your's?" or "Are they Silky's"? Because the are Silver & Blonde with Silky coats and very soft, and they are 10, 7, and 5 lbs. a piece (I have 3 Yorkies). Another stupid statement "Did you cut/crop their ears"? Since their Yorkie has Floppy ears. Too many people judge them b/c of their size and the fact that I make mine "Walk" and don't carry them in a purse. I do try to educate as many people as I can tolerate it depends on my mood and how time I have? Most of the time I just ignore them but I get really irritated and frustrated who came up w/the term "Teacup" any way if they don't exist? |
While at a petstore I had a lady approach Zoe and I, and she had a yorkie too- she asked if Zoe was a yorkie! I gave her a DUH look and said "yes she is". The she turned to her dog and said "Ah, remember when you looked like that?" LOL!! I just walked away laughing because clearly she doesnt even know what kind of dog SHE HAS!!!! :D :D haha! |
Another Stupid Question? OK. this has to be the 2 most Stupid Questions/Comments I've heard. This morning I was walking my 3 Yorkie's and while total strangers were comimg up to us to say "Hi"......I was asked since mine have long coats. "Are there short haired Yorkie's b/c all I've seen are Yorkie's with short hair"? I replied "NO" this is what Yorkie's look like if you don't shave their Hair off"! and another person asked "Did you use a Flat Iron to straighten their Hair"? and I answered "NO this is how their Hair is Naturally"! How Safe is that? "They also asked if they were "Lhaso Apso's" or "s**t Zu's"? Now that was irritating but I tried not to show it. |
