Am I wrong for picking the runt? I didn't pick Rowdy because he was the tiniest, but because of his cute face and personality...he just happened to be the runt! When I went to the breeder I had all intentions to pick one that wasn't the runt because of all the talk of them being not at healthy! Well needless to say...he picked us! When my husband was trying to get me to leave he said "Pick one!...we need to go!" well when he said that the smallest one (the two i was picking from were in my lap) quickly turned his head to look at me ang gave me the "eyes" so of course is said "this one"! Ok...sorry this is so long but I'm almost done! So we are going back over there today for just check on everything before he comes home and Friday and the other little guy still isn't sold so she told me that we can pick again if we want. I hate to do this, but I'm kinda of worried about getting the runt! He's not overly small, but he is a lot smaller than the biggest puppy! Should I be worried? |

Just because you got the runt doesn't mean he won't end up being the biggest. What is mainly being talked on her is about the fact when they are smaller and you have to nurse them and you tend to keep them longer than the other litter mates because of there weaker. That doesn't mean your little one is sickly. He is the runt but there can be several reasons for that and not that he will become sick. He could be just fine so don't let that fool you. He must be pretty healthy if he was ready to go and you haven't had problems with him since you got him home. He even picked you out and he must be active right? But you have to feel comfortable about this pick. So go with your heart and gut. He could end up being the best one out of his litter. |

From what our breeder told us when we picked up Bella she was the runt of her litter but before long outgrew two of her siblings which were actually estimated to weigh under 4 lbs. She's 6.7 lbs now at 16 months (she just got weighed at the vet the other day when she got her shots) and very healthy. So being the runt of the littler does not mean they won't be healthy or will be too small. Bella was 3 months when we got her so it was obvious that she wouldn't be too small and she was very healthy. If the pup appears healthy and not too small or fragile I'd go for it.:) Congratulations on your new baby!:D |
I dont think the runts are always unhealthy. My Jewels was the runt and shes never had any health problems. I would be interested in hearing a breeder perspective on this. Also My Jewels was super tiny only 12 oz when I brought her home and shes not a runt anymore shes 6lbs. So just because they are tiny it doesnt mean they will stay small |

My Matty was the runt! And she is feisty and BAD!! lol She's totally healthy. I don't think it matters. Someone always gets the runt, right? :) Good luck with your baby. |
My Onni was the smallest of the litter and the only female. She is 4 months old 2.4 pounds and quite healthy. I do worry about her more than my other dogs because of her size, but she is still growing, so may fool us and have a growth spurt. If they are all healthy I say choose the one who steals your heart regardless of size. |
I have a Bella too and she was also the runt. Literally half the size of her siblings. Under 1 pound at 2 months. The breeder and Vet told me she will be under 3 pounds for sure, probably even smaller. Well now she's over 5 pounds. Oh yea and she's a very healthy dog. Very independent and sassy. Even as a tiny pup, she had quite a personality. Quote:

I have had two "runts" over the years (one is my current pup) and I think there is often just something special about the little guy in each litter. They have to be a little scrappier to get their share of attention and milk from mama, because the big guys push them around. Archie put on a veritable "floor show" when I went to see him and his two brothers, both of whom were larger than him. He was the one with the most personality; attacking the pee-pee pad and growling, licking my chin and chewing on my rings. He made it impossible to leave him behind! He did have his share of health problems in the beginning --- some due to being so tiny and so active. BUT, he's been well worth it. The other runt I had was a toy poodle, years ago. He weighed a pound and a half when I brought him home and he was healthy as a horse his entire life! By the way -- Archie weighs 5 pounds now! RUNTS RULE! |
KaCee was the runt of her litter too and she is perfectly healthy and happy. She was about half the size of her next smallest sibling when I brought her home. I got to see one of her brothers when they were 6 months old and she was still quite a bit smaller than him. |
We have a pitbull that had 11 puppies last Sept. We kep one and my husbands friend kept the runt. She has grow to be bigger than all of her brothers and sisters. Just because its a runt when its a baby doesnt always mean it will be unhealthy. Our "runt" is the most beautiful of the bunch. |

My Sandy was the runt. Her brothers and sister were a lot bigger than she was. But she is healthy and happy. She is still the smallest one and she weighs around 6 lbs, at 3 years of age. And don't tell anyone, but she is the smartest of the bunch, too. :) |

My Ricky was the runt, he is 1 -1/2 years old and weigh only 2-1/2 lbs. He is healthy as a horse... He runs, jumps, fights with my other two that are 6 lbs. I guess I was lucky.. when describing a tiny as delicate, fragile, etc.. were definitely not talking about Ricky... |
My little Princess was the runt of the litter. She is now 18 months old 3 lbs. 9 oz. NO health problems whatsoever. A real little stinker at times! |
One of them is always going to be the "runt," I think this might have more significance with dogs that have 10 puppies though. I think you are right, when you say the dog picked you, that's the way it should be. |

My abbey was the runt she is 4 pounds and 4 years old,we picked her because she was feisty and actually got on the back of the biggest boy to get to the food and she is the smallest of my four and she is the alpha of my bunch of babies. |
I had an American Eskimo dog that was the runt of the litter. He was as healthy as could be and I had him for 16 1/2 years. I would make sure to take him to your vet for a check right away, but it doesn't mean he will be unhealthy. I think you need to go with your gut and how you connected with him. |
I think there is a difference between the runt and what they call a teacup. The runt just happened to be the smallest, teacup are breed from the smallest and makes some unhealthy. |
Different breed but still the runt. I breed & show Cairns, along with the Yorkies. A good few years ago now, one of my Cairns had a litter of eight, all were normal size except for one little bitch who was the tiniest Cairn puppy I'd ever seen. I kept her, as I was wary of anyone looking after her properly. She was quite slow to grow & she was never overly big, but by a year she was a proper size for a smallish Cairn. She was beautiful, a gorgeous red brindle, and she went on to be my first Champion, winning Best of Breed at many shows. xx Meggie |
Pick the runt...hehehe...go with your gut......plus IMO if a puppy picks you, you pick him/her.:D |
KiKi is the "runt" and although she is tiny 2.4 lbs at 8 months...she is just like any other puppy....but smaller... |
not all runts are unhealthy...hehe...they may develop slower at first but they will catch up...hehe congrats on your new baby! |
