What made you choose a Yorkie? I am curious to know what made others choose a Yorkie or their first Yorkie? I have always had dogs of some kind or another. My favorite has been Jack Russell's for a long time, because they are so animated. But that all changed when I set my eyes on my first Yorkie in April 2008. My husband and I were at a conference and a lady and her husband had their little male Yorkie at the hotel. He was adorable. They had him dressed in a different outfit each day. He just pranced around that conference like he was the only one worthy of attention. He was precious! My husband knew he was in big trouble when all I could talk about was how cute that little fella was. I came home and began my research. I researched the Yorkie for 2 months before I found my little girl Onni. I can't believe I have lived this long without a Yorkie!! I love my other dogs dearly and my Mikey (Jack Russell) :luvu: is my big baby boy, but Onni has stolen my heart in a way no other dog has. Looking forward to reading others first introduction to Yorkies. |
Well my experience is similiar to the OP. I work at a hotel, and we accomadate pets. So many people were coming in with yorkies, and I just melted at the heart everytime someone came in with one. I feel bad for the guests, they proabably thought I was crazy, cuz I wouldnt let them leave to go to their room! They have the most adorable faces and are just so cuddly. I dont have a yorkie yet, but I have been doing my research for several months, and am still looking, it can be frustrating sometimes, but I know its worth it :animal-pa |
I got my 1st yorkie 15 years ago..then i was hooked!:p |
I knew nothing about the Yorkie personality when I fell in love with the breed. It was the long gorgeous hair and that proud look they have on their little faces. I knew I wanted one for many years. The weird thing is...beford I got Bernie and Baxter...I had never owned a doggie! But I think I'm a really good mommie! |
We always had the really large dogs when we were younger, but as we got older it started getting a bit more difficult to keep up with all the activity the large beeds need. When we got to the point in our lives where we traveled a bit more we decided we would like another fur-kid to "nurture" since Delsi (our Chihuahua) was in her senior years and starting to show signs of decline, we (by lots of experience) decided on a few things we would like and not like in a toy breed. When we narrowed it down to 4 breeds we did some lengthly research before deciding on the Yorkie. I joined three Yorkie Rescues and fostered many of these guys to see if they still fit the bill on what we wanted. Each had their own personalities and idiosyncrasies, but one thing really showed thru with each one, (no matter if they were owner surrender, past abuse or puppy mill dogs) and that was the true Yorkie Spirit and tenacity and a will to survive and please. We were totally hooked, and the rest is history. ;) |
I was raised around shelties my entire life. My mother bred them for the first 16 years of my life so I really loved the breed and learned alot about them after showing and obedience training them. I love how smart they are and their loyalty. It was after my mother started breeding chihuahua's that I came across my first yorkie. I always watched them at dog shows and loved their long beautiful hair. But when a lady came to my mothers and wanted to trade her yorkie for a "less demanding chihuahau" I talked my mother into the trade and I took over the yorkie. From there I learned a TON about the breed and personality. I FELL HEAD OVER HEALS. Mia was a great dog and very loyal. She had a LONG silver coat with tan/blonde head and legs. I will someday get another one that looks similar to Mia. My husband says she was "chrome" and wants the same color! lol But thats when I fell in love with the breed. is was about 4 years ago. Mia has since passed on and Bruizer came into my life about a year later. Bruizer now lives with my aunt and I now have Bella (yorkie mix) and Essie. And after our house is finished in a couple months I will be on the look for another. :D |
I received my first Yorkie as a gift when I lose my Pomeranian . |
I grew up with German Sheppards, they are still on top of my list but being that we live in apartment i didnt want to confine such beatiful dog, so we decided to get small breed, i narrow it down to 2: Westies and Yorkies but boy one look at my boy Kuma and it was game over!!! the funny thing is that initially Kuma was my gift from hubby, but boy he is more Daddy's boy than mine (why i got Kaylee my princessa hehe) Kuma is all about daddy and so is my husband that initially didnt care for small breeds, he trully stole our hearts and so is Kaylee slowly doing to him again!!!! lol |
Garrett is my first yorkie also. I grew up with dogs, but larger ones. As a child I had a shepard, a corgie and a boxer mix. I'm from the islands and I dont think I've ever seen a yorkie there. However, visiting and then moving to the US, I saw yorkies everywhere. There are so many toy breeds here I was torn, but always favored the yorkie. After extensive research and convincing the hubby, I finally got my Garrett this year. I am soooooo in love with this little guy. Two of my closest friends have malteses, but I still think my boy is the best . Even my husband is hooked :D. YORKIES RULE  |
Well I did research on small dogs and fell in love with the little brown eyes and the bow in the hair ..... After doing enough reading on the Breed .... we got one ..... Yorkies had more pos. Points then the other small Breeds ..... |
When we decided to get a furry friend, it was between a yorkie and a maltese. The maltese came available first but she had separation anxiety which by everything you read and others will tell you, cannot be fixed by adding a dog. Well it worked in this case and so that is how we came to adopt Toby our Yorkie. Someone's circumstances had changed and they could no longer keep him. He was six months old. Since then we have added two more maltese to our pack but Toby is my special boy, my ONLY boy. |

I knew I wanted a smaller dog that I could easily pick up and carry. Due to health problems I could not handle a bigger dog. I was looking at poodles when we saw a yorkie at a flea market where the breeder has a booth. Hubby kept encouraging my son in law to go back and ask questions about the breed. Dtr and son in law eventually got Gremlin from him but I found my Gypsy somewhere else. I love her to death. I honestly never thought I would spend so much on a dog. Or that hubby would fall in love with her too. |
:aimeeyork I had grown up with poms as a kid. I never owned a dog/puppy on my own before. I had cats for the longest time, and loved them. I was aproved for a service dog because I am disabled. I looked for a small puppy and di not decide which breed to get for several months. I loved the maltese, pug, and Bision. I thought of getting a tiny poodle as well .Then I came accross the Yorkie. As much as i looked at other breeds I kept going back to the Yorkie. It was the face, and cute expression they have. I read about them, found out that they are small, and do not shed. the more I read, the more I started to feel like a Yorkie would be the right choice. I thought i'd adopt , and their was a big fair going on far away . I went, but their was not any more puppies. I wrote phone numbers down of different breeders, and they were all Yorkies. I was determined to get a puppy that very day .:D I ended up traveling the opposite direction, and out in the boonies to a older woman's home . She had just three yorkie puppies. And one girl. I wanted the girl baby. It took me hours to get there, and when I saw the little Yorkie baby, I could not believe it. She was too good to be true. I never saw such a precious pup before, then the Yorkie pup. I have had Suzi for nearly three months. I love her so much, and she is still unbeliable cute. :aimeeyork |
Why I chose a Yorkie? In this order: 1. Small indoor dog 2. Doesn't shed 3. Doesn't have a smashed face (s**tzu) 4 Is a terrier with terrier traits (for the personallity!) 5. Cute!!! Why I love my Bailey? She's the most-perfect companion in the world!!!! My husband was against getting a dog. It took me 11 years to talk him into it. He said "Dogs are animals and animals shouldn't live with people!" Just this week - he said "you did a great job choosing a Yorkie!" He carries her to bed each night talking to her along the way. |
I have always loved dogs...and have always had them in my life. My dad only like larger dogs...but when I was younger got us a miniature schnauzer...and from then I was hooked on small dogs. My ex BF worked at a mall and I always went to the pet shop. Don't worry I knew not to buy from them. But I always loved to look at the yorkies. In California prices are crazy...$3500-4000 for a yorkie. My ex BF saw how I loved the pup and bought her :( She was supposed to come with AkC papers...later they called and said she had APRI papers. In the contract it said papers or I would get 75% of the price back. Well she went back and I was on my search for a yorkie breeder. I found one and that is my story. Long story short...sad at first but it will soon be a happy ending. :) |
I grew up with large dogs and always wanted a small one but never thought it would be a yorkie, I feel in love with their loving and spunky personalities |
Iv e had cross breeds since adulthood, and my previous partner had 2 collies, and i had a dachound staff x. I wanted a small dog this time as the house is nt huge and a dog that does nt shed hair ..My fav aunt (sadly passed away now ) had 2 yorkies when i was a child one was chichaua x yorkie and i thought they were brill then, so in memory of my aunt too we have a gorgeous yorkie girl pup . |
YorkieTalk did - I was deciding between the Havanese and Yorkie. Joined a forum for both...got hooked on the Yorkie! :D |
I chose a yorkie because they don't shed, they are adorable, funny, loving, playful and justTHE BEST BREED EVER!!!!!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I NEVER thought I would own a yorkie. We had big dogs all my life so when I got my first pug I enjoyed the smaller compact size of them. After having my son we found out (he was about 2 or so at the time) that he was allergic to dogs. So when we where informed that our pug had terminal cancer we knew we wanted another dog but it had to be a non shedder. So it was actually my 4 yr old son who said he needed to get a yorkie. That was it. In less then 1 1/2 years we now own three and we could not imagine our life w/out them!!!!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
About 12 years ago, I was single and living alone. I considered getting a pet (prob a cat) because I thought it would be nice to have compionship. I remember walking into a little shop where the owner's yorkie was running around. I was never much of a dog person, but this little thing waddled up to me and rolled over on my foot. The shop owner said "She wants you to scratch her tummy." THAT love was what I wanted to come home to everyday!!! Yorkies are joy :) |

My husband and I both grew up with large dogs - him German Shepards and me Shar peis and Golden Retrievers. Last year I asked him what he wanted for his birthday and he said he wanted a dog. I agreed and asked him what he wanted. He said he wanted a yorkie. I was like, "You want a WHAT?" but the search began. 2 months later we ended up with little Chippy. I fell head over heals for that little pup so 7 months later we got Smokey! |
My mom said I could have a little dog. So, we researched little dogs. Since she is allergic, and the yorkie is a hypo-allergenic dog and doesn't shed, she got me one. |
1964 3 Attachment(s) It started in 1964 LOL the year I was born, MOM had a yorkie so we all got Yorkies O ya and she was also a Yorkie breeder and Had her own veterinary Practice. we have had other brees but nothing compares to the yorkie. |
I grew up with small dogs, and we loved watching dog shows and I fell in love with the Yorkie and Maltese watching them. They were so beautiful! My aunt had 4 yorkies and I just loved them up when I went to her house. I knew that I wanted one. After I got married I would look at them on the internet and tell my husband that I wanted one when we got our house. So in the last week of August in2006 We got our first house. I contacted my breeder and she worked with me and finally September 30th I got a call telling me Jeter had been born! So I waited a bunch of years till I finally got the Yorkie of my dreams:D Now I am awaiting two new ones to join the family by the second weekend of August. I'll have 3 little Yorkies!! |
I didn't had the choice , Darlin came home when I was 15 weeks old . She was a gift from my grandmother to my mother . I loved her to her last second . When my mother asked me which breed I'd like to have , I told her a Yorkshire Terrier , now , I have my adorable Mingtoy and waiting to have another one . |
I was actually looking for a Skye Terrier and since they are soooooooooo rare and nobody even knows what they are(at that time and even today) I got a Yorkie. That was 27 years ago and I have been hooked ever since. My dream of having a Skye did come true about 10 years after I got my first Yorkie. |
You mean there are other breeds out there besides Yorkies?;);) All I can say is my little Buddy-licious chose me....he held me hostage until I took him home!!!!:D:D:D He has had my "number" since the moment I laid eyes on him!!! |
