What made you choose a Yorkie? I am curious to know what made others choose a Yorkie or their first Yorkie? I have always had dogs of some kind or another. My favorite has been Jack Russell's for a long time, because they are so animated. But that all changed when I set my eyes on my first Yorkie in April 2008. My husband and I were at a conference and a lady and her husband had their little male Yorkie at the hotel. He was adorable. They had him dressed in a different outfit each day. He just pranced around that conference like he was the only one worthy of attention. He was precious! My husband knew he was in big trouble when all I could talk about was how cute that little fella was. I came home and began my research. I researched the Yorkie for 2 months before I found my little girl Onni. I can't believe I have lived this long without a Yorkie!! I love my other dogs dearly and my Mikey (Jack Russell) :luvu: is my big baby boy, but Onni has stolen my heart in a way no other dog has. Looking forward to reading others first introduction to Yorkies. |
Well my experience is similiar to the OP. I work at a hotel, and we accomadate pets. So many people were coming in with yorkies, and I just melted at the heart everytime someone came in with one. I feel bad for the guests, they proabably thought I was crazy, cuz I wouldnt let them leave to go to their room! They have the most adorable faces and are just so cuddly. I dont have a yorkie yet, but I have been doing my research for several months, and am still looking, it can be frustrating sometimes, but I know its worth it :animal-pa |
I got my 1st yorkie 15 years ago..then i was hooked!:p |
I knew nothing about the Yorkie personality when I fell in love with the breed. It was the long gorgeous hair and that proud look they have on their little faces. I knew I wanted one for many years. The weird thing is...beford I got Bernie and Baxter...I had never owned a doggie! But I think I'm a really good mommie! |
We always had the really large dogs when we were younger, but as we got older it started getting a bit more difficult to keep up with all the activity the large beeds need. When we got to the point in our lives where we traveled a bit more we decided we would like another fur-kid to "nurture" since Delsi (our Chihuahua) was in her senior years and starting to show signs of decline, we (by lots of experience) decided on a few things we would like and not like in a toy breed. When we narrowed it down to 4 breeds we did some lengthly research before deciding on the Yorkie. I joined three Yorkie Rescues and fostered many of these guys to see if they still fit the bill on what we wanted. Each had their own personalities and idiosyncrasies, but one thing really showed thru with each one, (no matter if they were owner surrender, past abuse or puppy mill dogs) and that was the true Yorkie Spirit and tenacity and a will to survive and please. We were totally hooked, and the rest is history. ;) |
I was raised around shelties my entire life. My mother bred them for the first 16 years of my life so I really loved the breed and learned alot about them after showing and obedience training them. I love how smart they are and their loyalty. It was after my mother started breeding chihuahua's that I came across my first yorkie. I always watched them at dog shows and loved their long beautiful hair. But when a lady came to my mothers and wanted to trade her yorkie for a "less demanding chihuahau" I talked my mother into the trade and I took over the yorkie. From there I learned a TON about the breed and personality. I FELL HEAD OVER HEALS. Mia was a great dog and very loyal. She had a LONG silver coat with tan/blonde head and legs. I will someday get another one that looks similar to Mia. My husband says she was "chrome" and wants the same color! lol But thats when I fell in love with the breed. is was about 4 years ago. Mia has since passed on and Bruizer came into my life about a year later. Bruizer now lives with my aunt and I now have Bella (yorkie mix) and Essie. And after our house is finished in a couple months I will be on the look for another. :D |
I received my first Yorkie as a gift when I lose my Pomeranian . |
I grew up with German Sheppards, they are still on top of my list but being that we live in apartment i didnt want to confine such beatiful dog, so we decided to get small breed, i narrow it down to 2: Westies and Yorkies but boy one look at my boy Kuma and it was game over!!! the funny thing is that initially Kuma was my gift from hubby, but boy he is more Daddy's boy than mine (why i got Kaylee my princessa hehe) Kuma is all about daddy and so is my husband that initially didnt care for small breeds, he trully stole our hearts and so is Kaylee slowly doing to him again!!!! lol |
Garrett is my first yorkie also. I grew up with dogs, but larger ones. As a child I had a shepard, a corgie and a boxer mix. I'm from the islands and I dont think I've ever seen a yorkie there. However, visiting and then moving to the US, I saw yorkies everywhere. There are so many toy breeds here I was torn, but always favored the yorkie. After extensive research and convincing the hubby, I finally got my Garrett this year. I am soooooo in love with this little guy. Two of my closest friends have malteses, but I still think my boy is the best . Even my husband is hooked :D. YORKIES RULE  |
Well I did research on small dogs and fell in love with the little brown eyes and the bow in the hair ..... After doing enough reading on the Breed .... we got one ..... Yorkies had more pos. Points then the other small Breeds ..... |
When we decided to get a furry friend, it was between a yorkie and a maltese. The maltese came available first but she had separation anxiety which by everything you read and others will tell you, cannot be fixed by adding a dog. Well it worked in this case and so that is how we came to adopt Toby our Yorkie. Someone's circumstances had changed and they could no longer keep him. He was six months old. Since then we have added two more maltese to our pack but Toby is my special boy, my ONLY boy. |

I knew I wanted a smaller dog that I could easily pick up and carry. Due to health problems I could not handle a bigger dog. I was looking at poodles when we saw a yorkie at a flea market where the breeder has a booth. Hubby kept encouraging my son in law to go back and ask questions about the breed. Dtr and son in law eventually got Gremlin from him but I found my Gypsy somewhere else. I love her to death. I honestly never thought I would spend so much on a dog. Or that hubby would fall in love with her too. |
:aimeeyork I had grown up with poms as a kid. I never owned a dog/puppy on my own before. I had cats for the longest time, and loved them. I was aproved for a service dog because I am disabled. I looked for a small puppy and di not decide which breed to get for several months. I loved the maltese, pug, and Bision. I thought of getting a tiny poodle as well .Then I came accross the Yorkie. As much as i looked at other breeds I kept going back to the Yorkie. It was the face, and cute expression they have. I read about them, found out that they are small, and do not shed. the more I read, the more I started to feel like a Yorkie would be the right choice. I thought i'd adopt , and their was a big fair going on far away . I went, but their was not any more puppies. I wrote phone numbers down of different breeders, and they were all Yorkies. I was determined to get a puppy that very day .:D I ended up traveling the opposite direction, and out in the boonies to a older woman's home . She had just three yorkie puppies. And one girl. I wanted the girl baby. It took me hours to get there, and when I saw the little Yorkie baby, I could not believe it. She was too good to be true. I never saw such a precious pup before, then the Yorkie pup. I have had Suzi for nearly three months. I love her so much, and she is still unbeliable cute. :aimeeyork |
Why I chose a Yorkie? In this order: 1. Small indoor dog 2. Doesn't shed 3. Doesn't have a smashed face (s**tzu) 4 Is a terrier with terrier traits (for the personallity!) 5. Cute!!! Why I love my Bailey? She's the most-perfect companion in the world!!!! My husband was against getting a dog. It took me 11 years to talk him into it. He said "Dogs are animals and animals shouldn't live with people!" Just this week - he said "you did a great job choosing a Yorkie!" He carries her to bed each night talking to her along the way. |
