Question For Those Who Have Struggled Financially... or do so now.. Has it ever crossed your mind to breed your dog to make a fast buck? I ask this because I've had people tell me that they "can not" work so breeding their dog repeatedly is the only way they can make ends meet. I have been down the path of being financially and emotionally broke down, and NEVER did I ever think of breeding a dog to "make ends meet." Am I alone in this? When I see a pure bred dog, my mind doesn't go wow! I could make a fortune on pups from that dog! The first thing I think is how I'd love to have him/her as part of my family, and then I wonder if the dog is already spayed or not...because I'm wondering if I'd need to get it done. This has been on my mind for quite a long long time... |
That would be the worst reason to breed dogs. I'm sure some think just that way though. I have had someone tell me they bred their dog to have puppies to give to family members. Well the dog died and so did the puppies. It isn't about just breeding and getting puppies. Some people willt bred for the fast buck and have it backfire. My last litter cost me about 250.00 after all expenses were paid not to mention my time which I get 37.80 an hour at my job. You should never be in it for the money but the love of the bred and to better the breed. Having puppies to make ends meet is plain dumb :thumbdown:mad: |
breeding I can 99% guarantee if you breed to put food on the table, you will take short cuts...vet care, diet, supplies, grooming needs..on and on...and most will sell to the person with the money because the electric bill is due... A few years back AARP magazine had an article how Seniors could make added income..they actually suggested dog breeding..can you believe it, boy did they get letters... |
Nope nor would I. It would not be a "money" maker because I would not be able to sell the puppy's they would "be mine all mine.":D:D:D:D It would cost me more in the long run on food, vet, toys, clothes etc... No not a good idea :p |

Thanks for the opinions! I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this! |
To me that seems like a horrible reason to breed. I'm currently unemployed and though it's hard I make it work. I would go hungry before I ever let Lola run out of food. I would never think to get into breeding. Not for one second. And by next month it won't even be an option because I'm getting Lola spayed. It seems really sad that people would resort to that sort of thing. I guess it's wrong to judge, I'm not in their shoes, but it still doesn't seem right. |

To all YT breeders: please don't take offense to what I have said! I have complete respect for what you guys do and I have seen the love you all have for your babies! My post is in regards to those who breed their dogs for money only, not for the love of the breed!!! |
Well my 02 cents.. my last litter was my biggest.. I thought this was going to help me dig our of the red on my breeding.. well I lost three babies.. so now at one.. had $800.00 in vet bills, then yesterday I went to the vet for first shots at 75.00 dollars.. and another 10 for wormer for her.. so these people that say they can make it on producing litters need to write a book.. I was hoping only to get money back that would help towards maravihosa's costs.. and am still needing a new male.. so I do not get this at all...I breed for my love of this breed.. and I breed the best I can purchase to use in my small breeding program.. So I for one do not believe if you do it right.. go to the vet and make sure the female is cared for and looked after.. then the babies.. that takes money.. but if you cannot do that.. then why bother.. anne |

I have a co-worker that wanted one of my puppies to start breeding..I had told her they were already taken...A week later she bought s**t zoos :grin2: and then used her and her roomates(story all in itself) to buy another and another Mastiff...which she already had one...so now, she lives in a development and one of her neighbors contacted the animal people about her having so many dogs! Her s**t dog just had a litter of 5 the other day...her roomate..who also works with me, calls me to tell me they just had pups and to make sure it would be ok for him to go to work :scratchhe so I run through the whelping common sense questions and it sounded like everything went well....sorry..getting sidetracked here....our last conversation was her asking me to go in with her since we have a bit of land....brace yourselves....to build an outside kennel with runs and do a *ahem*(puppy mill) breeding kennel. She proceeds to tell me how she cant work in this job forever that she wanted something easy to make money and wants to get more dogs but has to wait because of her f'n neighbors. So I sat there and listened...then very politely said...I am and want to remain a very small breeder. I love the breed that I breed. I have waited over 12 years to own and breed and I'm really not in it for the money...yes the money is nice...if you make any after the fact but....she looks at me dumbfounded and says, oh, well I wanted to "get" yorkies but they are so expensive. Geez...what do you say to that? She is a very strongheaded, opinionated person...oh wait, thats me! jk..she is too! I only say things that I can word in just the right way so that I am not downgrading her but at the same time making her look like an ass. It never ceases to amaze me! |
Any breeder on her can attest to what I am about to say. 1. You cant make money dog breeding...you usually either break even or go in the hole...IF you are doing it correctly and giving all the neccessary care. 2. Breeders dont breed for money, usually, they breed for the perfection of the breed. 3. It's hard to give up puppies...its like here stranger come buy my kid from me....its heartbreaking when you see a stranger carrying your little puppy away to a new home hoping just hoping that the people who just bought him/her were not lying about the intentions and are a good family. 4. Breeding is difficult and stressful So I say to people who breed to "make a quick buck," your disgusting and you would make more money selling crap on ebay...hehe okay not crap cause I sell stuff on ebay b/c im a college student. |
I won't be breeding from my Katie or Suzi. Katie will be spayed next month. (She had a fanthom pregnancy so had to wait.) Hopefully Suzi at 6 months. Its very much like they do with babies in England. Some young girls have them so they can have a free flat and live off the state. I think you must have to have lots of knowledge before attempting breeding. Hugs Shirl x x |
I would absolutely never consider using my babies to support me. The very idea is repulsive |
Nope! i got Kash neutered as soon as he was old enough, and never once thought of studding him out or buying a female to breed puppies. my mom actually suggested i stud him, but i said i didn't want to... (my mom and i don't agree on A LOT of things). i may not have a lot of money, but i got Kash because i wanted a companion, not a money machine. |
Breeding does not make you any money..... Back when bella had her pups I put more in prenatal care and vet checks on her and the pups. I ended up a couple hundred in the hole. But I didn't care because I still get to see the pups from time to time and I still call everyonce in a while to see how they are. I dont look at is as going in the hole. I look at it as I took THE BEST care of them. When My skin kids go to the doctor and need meds we dont call that going in the hole. Well I look at my dogs the same way. |
No I wouldnt use Sadie to help me financially. We dont need the money but I wouldnt do it if we did. I doubt that those that would use their dogs for financial gain would actually say it on here though. |
I can't stop myself from posting. I wish there was a process and regualtions that people had to go through before they breed a dog. The humane society's are putting to sleep thousands of dogs every year in every city. I do not have the mind of a breeder. I cannot fathom rehoming a retired female to make room in my program. I could never do that, and I don't understand it. I do not have the mind of a breeder, but thats a whole other topic. I feel that if there was a complex process you were REQUIRED to go through before breeding, there would be less bad breeding. |
Me too !!! Quote:
:thumbup::thumbup: This is my experience also BUT i do it because i LOVE Yorkies - am no longer able to show but i sure love to see some babies every once in a while and to see the happy faces when i place a new baby ( even though i am lucky to break even on the money part ) and then i have that thought that all good people deserve a good healthy baby so when some one loses one due to a "MONEY GRUBBING " back yard breeder and the puppy dies in 3 days or so - i even help that unsuspecting person have a healthy happy baby - there goes more of that "BIG PROFIT' some unknowing amature thinks you can make . OK - I will get off my soap box as i could vent about this subject most all day and still have plenty to say :D |
breeding for $ I had someone email me last week wanting a puppy for breeding so she could breed it and make money. She should only read the threads about the litters we have seen in the last couple weeks, with Lola, and Chloe. Two years ago I bred one of my girls, Daisy, it was her first litter. One of the pups became detached and she went into labor on day 56. I knew I was in trouble. I took her into the vet , she had to be opened up. She had 5 pups, one survived. Got her home, two days later, her temp is spiking, got to 105. Rushed her to the vet, she had pyrometria. The vet didn't think she'd make it. He had to go back in, she was spayed. I was hand raising her little pup at this point, she stayed at the vet for over a week. Did i make money? First vet bill was close to $1000, second was $2500, stud fee with champion stud, was $750. I was lucky the stud owner was gracious enough to not take their right of refusal on the only surviving puppy, which I kept. He's going to be shown. This is the extreme case of things going wrong and I have had successful litters, but you have to be prepared for the worst case scenario and have the extra $ or good credit card to cover the expenses. Not to mention the foods, vaccinations, tail docking, dew claws, and all the things the mom needs during her pregnancy and afterwards. |
While I can understand that many people, after first buying their Yorkie, are tempted to "replicate" it; it's unfortunate that they don't study the subject enough to realize breeding Yorkies is much more difficult than the larger breeds. I think people tend to think that reproduction is a very natural thing, and done in nature constantly, and with very few problems. They don't understand though, when man first became involved in breeding dogs, it became extremely important to do it in a healthy way. The testing that should be done on the dogs is too expensive if you are just going to put out a litter or two, so they neglect to do this important testing, and the results of poor breeding often don't show up until years later when the offspring is diagnosed with a genetic illnesses, and often after being bred themselves. What's really sad for the breed, as a whole, is that it's the poor breeder who sells dogs with no restrictions on breeding, so the whole thing repeats itself, resulting in dogs that are sicklier and sicklier. |

If you cannot help a shelter what in the world makes you think you can breed??????? THE PUPPY THEY BREED MAY END UP IN THE SHELTERS THEY SHOULD BE HELPING!!!!! CUZ THEY SELL TO JUST ANYONE!!! DUH okay im done had to vent lol |

I think their are people who could be tempted if they were struggling, They see $$$ because they know what people are willing to pay for a Yorkie pup. But then $$$$ is needed for breeding so if you need money for every day living and struggling how are you going to be able to properly care for the litter? You need money for that too! People really need to research the breeding process before they think they can get money out of it! |
Yikes! I feel lucky never to have run across anyone that thinks that way. I am in Grad school so I understand budgeting what you have and that kind of thing. I even budget Bella's allowance - I know this makes me seem crazy, but it's not. I use her "allowance" to buy toys or clothing. And I only spend that amount each month. So far it has worked great since I have had Bella since May. It helps keep me in line so I don't go overboard (which I tend to do ALOT). My cousin wanted me to breed Bella with our friends Yorkie who is about 7 months older than Bella and I sad NO WAY!!!! I would consider it if I had a clue about breeding and had someone holding my hand, but then I wouldn't be able to give up Bella's puppies. So I would have lots and lots of yorkies. So I am having Bella fixed in September to remove that temptation. Besides, my thought is to leave it to the breeders who know what they are doing and are good at it! |
I've never ever thought of that. Not only is Tucker fixed (which could be a damper on that plan lol), he is NOT standard, and breeding costs more money than you make, usually. It's just wayyyyy too much stress, emotions, and what not where you can just sell....everything else...on ebay and make a quick buck that way. JMO. |
I did think about breeding Chip once... but that was before I was more educated on the subject and it certainly wasn't for money... I wanted to because I love him and wanted something from him, but then I realized that since I love him, it's best not to breed him. :-) |

When I see sites like this one I wonder if maybe I shouldn't consider breeding! Dragonfly Acres | Breeders of quality English Mastiff's Puppies in Illinois& Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie), We Also Raise Miniature Dexter Cattle, 100% Boer & Pygmy Goats, Lionhead Rabbit's On Our Farm! For Sale in Illinois! No, I'm not serious. I have thought about buying a few breeding pairs of canaries or finches though. That seems like an easy one. |

Couldnt have been said any better...thanks for that. I hope a lot more people are persuaded not to breed unless they really know what they are doing and it something they are SERIOUSLY INTERESTED in. Thanks Diggy |
