ok i need to understand this better i was just reading this post http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ders-here.html from wat i understand.... people on this list are "usda approved" does this mean they are puppy mills??? i bought abby at a petstore (sorry i dindt know better) and the breeder is on this list AND from misouri (not surprised now cuz i know better). so, does this mean 10000000% that abby's mommy n daddy were from puppy mills????? |
I think a lot of these USDA breeders are mills. Why else would you need a license to have so many dogs etc. Not sure but I would be hesitant to buy from one of them. Odds are being as your baby is from a pet store it was a mill situation. For the most part good breeders won't sell to a pet store. Remember a pet store won't pay a breeder $1k for a pup and then try to sell it for a little over that price. They are trying to make money. |
I always promised myself that I would never buy from a Pet Shop. But, two years ago, I found myself drawn to this little yorkie in the window of a pet shop. I tried to tell myself that if I didn't take her, then no telling where she would end up and somehow that made it okay at the time. I couldn't even bring myself to tell my husband where I had bought her and (I am NOT saying this is right by any means), but to this day I have never told my husband that she came from a pet shop. He still thinks that she came from an 'adopt-a-thon' where they had taken pets from puppy mills and we just happened to get lucky enough to adopt her. Okay...all that aside, I have always wondered about where she came from and her parents, etc. I do not have a kennel name, but I do have an address. Is there any way to find out if it was a puppy mill situation? Do they have to tell you which kennel? I wonder if I could find out anything.... |
Maybe try a reverse look up or google the address and see what you come up with. If it belongs to a breeder the kennel name will probably show up and you can follow up from that avenue. |
Commerical breeders must be registered with the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA). |
"Commercial" just screams mill to me. |

I got Roxi from a pet store, post YT, and I wanted to get another one, a boy, so I was thinking about going to the same place (same breeder and cut out the pet store all together!!) . But I waned to seek out the bredder personally and find out if she was running a mill. She had a USDA # and was from South Dakota. Jrsygal37 did a bunch of research for me, and yes, she was in fact from a puppy mill. I was really upset, and so needless to say, I did NOT go back to her!!! I got Rocco thru a reputable breeder..... From what I learned from jrsygal37 is that USDA allows "breeders" to breed up to 250 breeds at the same time... I would def say talk to her, she is really knowledgable on the topic, and can find out if your dog came from a mill for sure... Good luck! |

Sometimes the breeders from the puppy mills try to sell on there own for larger $'s then when they sale to a broker that takes them to the Pet Stores they get less $'s and then the Pet Stores bump the price way up. So not sure that you would get a better deal possible better than what you got at the Pet Store price. However I don't think you would want to support a puppy mill. I bet you can get some names of good reptuable breeders in your area from here. Why don't you try that or a rescue? |
I had tried a Google search before and nothing came up. I am definitely going to try the reverse look-up (I never had even thought of that--even though it seems the logical thing to do!) I would love to know more about all of the puppy mill info. I have seen pictures and read articles, but knowing that they can breed up to 250 at one time? oh my...I thought the 20 or so you hear about is awful but I can not even imagine. I'm just....outraged, shocked and just sickened to think about the conditions of 250 animals at once. |
99% of pups sold to pet stores come from puppy mills, this is an industry fact. i now will not even walk into a pet shot that sells pups, anymore. I just cannot support it, it isn't the puppies in the windows themselves but rather the poor mama's and papas living their life unloved and not as a pet but a commodity. |
I just got my Ivy from a rescue and they got her from a puppy mill. I can see that she has had a lot of puppies, and yes she never has had any love. She is 4 or 5 years old and doesn't even know how to walk on a leash:( She is trying to be friends with us all, and now she gets so happy when I come in the room:D loves my lap. I know that getting a baby from a good breeder is great:) but I hope people stay out of the pet shops, and if you see one in the window PLEASE go and look up a rescue and save a yorkie:D |
