Why do you dock the tails? We have two new puppies 9 weeks old and their tails have been docked. Now I was wondering why do they get this procedure done? I have seen pictures of undocked tails they look okay. |
Good question. Anyone?? |
Maybe is that the standard for the breed? |
It is the standard but I have heard it is because they are soo tiny that the tails can easily get slammed in doors and whatnot and the pain o fhaving the tails docked at 3 days is nothing compared to having a broken tail...something to that effect |
Sanitary reasons and the fact that it makes the dog look good! I believe they no longer do it in Britain. |
As many of you know, Rika does not have a docked tail. If anyone ever wants to know why they shouldn't dock tails, just come to me. I love Rika's tail and the fact that it's long. I honestly don't think they should dock tails anymore. :aimeeyork |

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other though. It's my understanding that the docking is a fairly simple process when done very early. :) |

One of my Yorkie girls has a docked tail and it's still cute nonetheless. My little Yorkie Boy doesn't have his tail docked and it's beautiful and fits him well. I think regardless docked or not I love how it looks on all the yorkies. adds a little pizazz with the tail, and looks cute without. |
:) I've seen the tails both ways and they look good either way. They are just way too cute of a dog so the tail doesn't make a difference to me. My Stomper's tail is docked. My aunt has a yorkie and his is not docked and he is just as cute...if not cuter! :) |
I have no idea why they dock yorkies tales, but i do know why they dock lambs. If you don't dock a lambs tale it hangs straight down almost to the ground and they sh** on it. I don't know if this is the same for yorkies. My little guy has a nothing of a tale...i personally think he was docked a little short. but it's so cute when he wags it his whole back end wiggles. |

But how true!!! OMG I'm going to say this always now!!! QUICK STORY: When Eli and I were on vacation, we couldn't take Sully, of course, but anyway, we went to California for the 1st time and every time we were really excited or impressed with the view, the food, etc, we'd wave around our index finger saying "if Sully were here, he'd be happy like us" - we were too funny, and we still do that a lot, haha! |
i have pictures of un-docked tail as alot of you know Rex doesnt have a docked tail. ~here is a thread with rex'z un-docked tail :p rex's tail |

Tail docking, imo, is cruel and it has been banned in more progressive countries. It used to be done when dogs were working dogs to prevent them from injuring the longer tail when they were "working". Now it is done simply to please judge's at dog shows. It is illegal to dock tails in Germany so the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier from Germany has an undocked tail. There is a movement in this country to ban all "cosmetic" surgery on dogs which would include earclipping and tail docking. Anyone who tries to tell you that the puppies do not feel any pain, or even "less" pain, at three days old is not accurate according to the research on this that I have read. They do feel pain and they cry. Breeders who sell show dogs feel they have to dock tails because they cannot tell what will be a show dog and what will be a pet until the puppies are much older so they dock all the tails just in case. Hobby and pet breeders do it because they think people expect it. I, for one, hope the movement to ban these painful and unnecessary procedures here is successful. I love an undocked tail, although all of mine have docked tails. |
hi my rosie has her tail and it wiggles so much that her whole little butt moves too. no poo doesnt get on there tail, and yes it is ilegal to dock a dogs tail in the UK unless its for health reasons, so iv not seen a dog with a docked tail for years. wendy and rosie :rose: :yorkiesar |
