Why does size matter???? I just need to vent... I had someone email me intereseted in buying Polo. She filled out the questionnaire and everything. I told her that Polo was not available and then told her all about Marco. That I thought he may be around 7lbs full grown. I told her how wonderful and sweet he is and she says that he will be "way to big for her" She wants a playmate for her havaneese that she said is 19 lbs. HOW ON EARTH is 7lbs too big???? I don't really care that she feels that way because I would not want him to go to someone like that but it is just really irritating that some people only care about appearance and not health.. Marco is actually my favorite now as he has the best presonality of them all but noone wants to give him a chance... Such a shame that people feel that way....I know that the perfect home will come along but I just had to vent about this....I feel better now :D |
i think all the rant and rave about the word teacup has implanted peoples mind of this vision of a yorkie...size really don't matter...i have one that is under 4 lbs full grown, one that is right at 7 lbs..and 2 that are still puppies and no telling how big they will get...people don't understand that yorkies come in all shape and sizes....its too bad that a lot of people chase after this teacup yorkie that does not exist.... |

I don't understand either...My 11 lb yorkie is the sweetest little guy ever, and everyone that meets him falls in love with him. Just because he's bigger, it doesn't make him less of a yorkie or less loveable!! |
Why does size matter? I think it's stupid because I wanted a yorkie for a pet I could spoil rotten and I could care less if Mufasa is 10 pounds or 3 pounds as long as he is healthy. That's what's important to me!!!! Marco is an absolute DOLL and I would love to have him!!!! |
I understand what you mean.It is very annoying but she just was not meant to have him, her lost! |
I don't get the size thing either. I was shocked at how small some yorkies were when I was first looking at getting a puppy. Both their actual weight and their projected weight. Now that I have Bella, I don't care how big or small she will be. Just as long as she's healthy and happy thats all that matters. whether she's considered/called teacup/standard or teapot - which I had never heard until I came on here. I snuck Bella into Target when I first got her to get her carrier and the manager of the store came over because she had Yorkies. She asked how old she was and then made the comment "oh she'll be a little bit then". I had never heard that term and I said excuse me. She explained that a "little bit" is between a teacup and a standard. I told her that all of those terms were incorrect and there are just Yorkies. She wasn't very pleased with me, but oh well :D |
I'm having this issue with my own mother. She wants a yorkie so I told her I'd get her one from the same place I have Leo from... She then starts telling me she wants a tiny "pocket" puppy. I told her that getting a il tiny one was not a good thing and I told her everything I have learned here about it all.. she still wants a tiny one.I told her I"d not get her a tiny one she'd have to get that herself. I wanted to get her one because Leo is just the cutiest lil fuzball I've ever had adn he is just soo sweet and loving. SO until she changes her mind about size, she's not getting a Yorkie from me. ha ha |
Coming from someone who is new to the world of yorkies, even I can appreciate that comment. When people ask me if Keelyn is a teacup I go, no thank god because they tend to have a lot more health problems. People want her to stay this little! (2.4lbs) and I say, I signed up for a dog, not a beanie baby as cute as they may be :). Granted if she were little I would love her just as much! But to go out of your way to get a little one seems naive. Even when my mom tells people "Lauren has the cutest toy yorkie" I scold her and say, she isnt a toy, it is a toy breed, she is going to be a normal size and I have to differentiate b/w the tiny ones and the normal sized ones and I told her that there are even some that get to be 12lbs! More of them to love and cuddle with :). Anyway, I definitely appreciate the aggravation. Maybe we should all round up and do an HBO special on yorkies to educate the public :) hahah |
As for me...size did matter a lot. That is why I bought a pup that was 6 months old and knew that he was pretty much full grown. I have been in the same line of work for over 20 years and have bad hands and wrists. I have no strength left. So I wanted a 3-5# yorkie for a reason. So I could carry him without a lot of pain. :) |
well that is a rational reason atleast! I was referring more to the people who want to be like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears! Not for me thank you :) I love my Keelyn just the way she is :) |
I am in agreement with some of the previous posts. But if "Some" breeders would not put "special verbs" to describe their babies and then charge quite a bit more for the "special verb". (I am not calling yorkies verbs.) It is the ploy to get some people hooked to buy. I could never breed because if I had a smaller yorkie I would very very particular on who was going to be taking care of this baby the rest of their life. NOT the price I would get for the baby. I think it is much more important for the person to be qualified for lack of better terms to be able to actually care for the little furbutt. Seth is 11 pounds, and Sasha is 7 pounds. I would not trade them for anything!!!! They are my 6 and 7th child.:D |

Back on track...I have 2 teapots, Charlie is almost 8lbs and Nyla will be a big baby she is only 3 months and weighs 3.7 lbs, 2 standards Blaine at 6.5 lbs and Lucy at 5.5 lbs and I have one tiny at just 3 - 3.5 lbs (she fluctuates in weight in winter and summer) Sabrina and I got to say she is the one that worries me the most out of all of them especially when she jumps, she is so tiny. I love my teapots though they are too cute with their big ears and paws and their long tails. I love my babies wether they were tiny's or teapots it doesn't matter to me at all, in fact when I first purchased my babies I just knew blaine would be a teapot because he weighed 4 pounds when I got him at 16 weeks he was so cute as a big puppy with his floppy ears, but he stopped growing at 6.5 lbs and his ears stand straight up now. |

See that just goes to show that just because a puppy is big does not mean he will stay big.. 6.5lbs is a great size and at 16wks weighing 4lbs you would have thought he would be 10lbs... I was playing with the puppies today and Marco is so thick and healthy.. It is so much fun playing with his fat butt that if I didn't think my husband would leave me, I would keep him... He will make someone VERY happy......:D |

Most "good" breeders do not advertise tinies, t-cup, etc. I always tell folks that if they see that in their search, move onto the next breeder. |

When I was looking for a puppy, I wanted a "smaller" pup, not because I wanted to be paris hilton or nicole richie or whoever. My friend neil has a sweet little pomeranian that is 4lbs and I thought he was the perfect size!! Neko (his dog) is what made me want to get a smaller one because my mom has a yorkie that turned out to be a teapot at 8lbs and he is a handful/harder to carry. You can't really take him anywhere in any sort of carrier! He loves to be out in public places, but he is too big to be hidden, so he mostly has to stay at home with her! So I had 4-5lbs in mind--good to stay at home, good to take out. I wanted to make sure the parents were smaller as well, to get as good as guarantee as I could that they wouldnt end up 8lbs. I just picked the smallest one I could find, but she ended up not growing very much as Pebbles is almost 7 months and she is 2.8 pounds. I guess she will be around 3 1/2 pounds full grown which is close enough for me. I am getting a playmate for her though and he will be coming home in two weeks. Size was really important for me with finding him, because Pebbles is so small that she cannot play with most dogs on even footing. I do not know of any dogs her size around here (all of them are big dogs), and being that I was getting him primarily for her, I wanted them to be the same size!! Well, when i found him he was adorable and I had to have him even though he is probably going to be smaller than pebbles. Being that he is 17 ounces and 10 weeks currently, this will probably be the case. I think it is fine though, but I don't like people thinking I am "shallow" or something because my dog is smaller. They are both extremely healthy and sweet, and were not bred to be so small. They just happened to show up on this earth that way! |

Good post. I think size is only one consideration out of many. Health for me is absolutely number one, and breeders who breed to standard usually try to breed healthy and sociable puppies as well. I think many people are bothered by the fact that some breeders always say that the dog will not be over 7 pounds and it gets much bigger than this. I have read many posts that say that their pup was "guarantee teacup" and weighs 8 pounds at 4 months. So when a breeder says 7 pounds, you always wonder. |
Unless someone is searching for a micro dot sized puppy...I have absolutely no qualms with size being part of their criteria for purchasing a puppy. In my search for Reggie, I waited until I found a breeder and puppy who met all the criteria I was searching for...including size. |
Personality is the biggest for me and like a man, it helps to have one that is nice looking. ;) It doesn't do diggly squat though if you can't play with them, love on them, and talk to them. (dogs and men) ;) |
IMO I think all yorkies are precious. Small, medium and large ;) Now what I wanted when looking for max was a puppy that had a baby face and was not going to be too big. It was my personal preference and don't think I should have to cover up the fact that I wanted a smaller yorkie. Hes 3 1/2 pounds and exactly what I wanted. I often see a lot of post where people say their dogs are 3-4 pound range and they were hoping they'd get bigger and that might very well be the case for them but it wasn't for me. when I was searching I wanted a pup 3-4 pounds, now if max were to get to 10 pounds I would love him the same. I don't think that people should be looked at as a bad owner because they want a smaller pup. Breeders have a tendency to say they don't breed for money but yet they price the smaller ones higher, why? never understood how a breeder can say there's no such thing as a teacup but then price their smaller ones as teacups  sorry for the novel lol |
I think if people knew the cost that comes with the really small dogs they would think twice. Not saying all small dogs have issues but in most cases they are more likely to. I just wish people would think about the future when they get dogs not what is cool at the moment. |
I think yorkies are sweet in all sizes |
I think people want different things. I knew that I wanted a tiny dog. I might not have gotten her from the best breeder but I would do it again. I knew I wasn't going to breed her, I wanted her to be tiny and I got exactly what I wanted. Although I did not necessarily want her to have a Liver Shunt it happened and we dealt with it and now she is all better. Teddi will be 2 years old in September and she is 3 lbs. which is exactly what I want! |

Very few breeders don't breed for the money; there is a huge difference in breeders. Some truly love the breed and have spent years studying it, and going to shows, for them breeding is a passion not an attempt to make a few dollars. They are honestly trying to improve the breed, and don't price male and female puppies differently or smaller size puppies differently. They never use the teacup word, and truly are only looking for the best possible homes for their pups. They insist upon limited registration in most cases, or have their pups neutered before placing. These are the ones that don't breed for money, and in my opinion, the only ones who should be breeding. |
