Men and Yorkies OK, I'm just throwing this out there..... I've heard there are other men that have Yorkies on here, but I never see any in the forums. Also, why the stereotype of a guy having a small dog being "feminine"????? No one on here has ever suggested that, you all have been accepting and very friendly. It's more of the public in general. I was raised around small dogs and it's just a preference I and some other guys have. I'm cool with what people think. I just don't get the connection. If a Dad has a short child, no one would think anything of that. :aimeeyork |
I just went to Petsmart yesterday and saw two guys with little dogs. I saw a very athletic type guy with a tiny chihuahua and another guy with a toy poodle. I think it's cute! I even spoke to the Athletic guys b/c she was so cute and he was going on and on about how she runs the house. She was his little princess from what I could see. |
My husband loves Lily and Kingston and he does not care what other people think about it. |
All I have to say is that I have owned a dog from each size catagory. Right now I own a little hellion. I am a very proud yorkie daddy. Even though she isnt as small as most. I think there is a stigma for a lot of guys that small dogs are for sissies and gay guys (not that I don't perpetuate that by being a gay guy). All that should matter is that you love your dog and you take care of them for their whole life. |
I think it's fine for ANY one to have Yorkie or any other small dog. My best friend has always had small and big dogs since he was little. As he's gotten older (now just turned 31) he has a Maltese and is considering getting a Yorkie or another little dog. He just likes the smaller dogs because its' easier for him to take care of and they don't mind him having to be away for work. I was in Petsmart yesterday too and apparently it was small dog day with their male owners because it was packed with poodles, yorkies, and chihuahuas. There's even a very macho/athletic type of man that goes to my vet and he has this teeny tiny chihuahua that he thinks he and I need to set up on a date.:D My thought is if you love your dog, that's all that matters and poo poo on anyone that says differently. ha ha My man plays with Leo as much if not more then the kids and I do. He takes him places and loves him to bits. |
My dh loves Scooter and prefers small dogs over large breeds. |
Some guys see a big, tough dog as an extension of their manhood. Some of us don't need such an extension. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :D |
I'd have to say that's a sterotype and people should have whatever dogs they like We have four small Yorkies, and my husband adores them and dotes on them almost as much as I do. When he comes in from work every day, he gives me a hug and kiss then lies down on the floor to play with the dogs, and he's not effeminate by any means. If people think you're weird just because you have miniature dogs rather than something "masculine," they likely have an issue with their own masculinity. LOL. They don't know what they're missing from being so narrow-minded ;) |

The 2 men who are active members who pop in my mind are Bubblpopelectrc (Kyle) and Alaskayorkie (Mike).:) ETA- my husband used to be one of those men who thought men should only own big dogs but he got over it.:p |
When I first got Gracie my husband kinda had that fufu dog attitude but it only took a few minutes for him to get over it. Then we I dressed her in first outfit he didn't really want to hold her in public. I think he was kind of embarrassed. Well....that didn't last long. She is definitely a Daddy's Girl and he even picks out clothes for her that he thinks will look cute on her. He is very protective of her and...if anyone refers to her as a "rat dog" he jumps all over them. Way to go Daddy!!! |
Syd is my first small dog. I wouldn't trade him for the world. Besides, I have no issues with my manhood. |

There are lots of reasons to prefer a small dog and none of them have anything to do with if you're a boy or a girl.:) |

I think the only men with a problem with small dogs have their own problems, not you. M dh is so crazy about my babies... even dd's boyfriend is crazy about them! You stick with us... we like anyone who loves a yorkie.... d |
I have 3 Yorkies . I will never have a big dog just to please peoples who are thinking a man should have a big dog . |

I think a man with a yorkie is HOT!! :D Any guy wanting to get my attn would capture my heart in a second if he was toting a yorkie ;) |
I agree with everyone here!! My Sydney loves her daddy and he has grown to love her too!! He was a big dog type of guy but not anymore!! He's so excited now that we think Syd may be pregnant!! He's almost like he was when I was pregnant!! |
:aimeeyork Men who feel like they need a pit bull, german shepard, or Doberman pincher, to feel Macho are pathetic. Just like when they need their cool, big cars. Geez, they are trying to compensate for their shortcomings. :aimeeyork When I was a kid my parents, Father.. Always had small dogs. Pom. NOw that is a foo foo dog! He was always very cool with the little dogs, and so are my brothers! BY the way one of them, who is a doctor settled for a toy breed for his family.:D |
Kev...my brother says a dog is just like a child....carry one with you and you will get all the babes...he called the chick magnets....must of worked....he is happily married now...and believe me he is all man...and a big man at that |
My husband loves our three yorkies to pieces! He kisses them and tells them he loves them everyday, at least once!!! |
So interesting to see this thread! In fact, when looking to get a puppy I was torn between getting a Yorkie and getting a poodle (I grew up with poodles). I gave my boyfriend the choice and he chose to get a Yorkie because he felt they were less fru-fru. That said, his family owns a poodle/chihuahua mix, Fidget, and he loves her to death! And he fully admits that once the puppy comes home he'll love her. But he did grow up with Dobbies and maybe has a bit of a 'big dog' mentally simply because that's what he grew up with. But I agree, anyone should be able to own any dog they want. In fact I'm super impressed by a guy being genuine and loving to an animal, be it big or small!! |
im a guy and i had one and now looking for another. im straight too !:D |
My Husband is a man that likes small dogs. He is also crazy about ours |

The chick magnet yes ... one time I sent dh with Jolie to vet and then to pet store ... and I was saying it takes a real man to carry a yorkie on his arm in her designer bag and then the women at work reminded me how he will attract other women this way ... well I dont let him go anywhere with them without me anymore . |
