Show me your gates!! Hi everyone! I'm in YT withdrawal. I've been so busy the last couple of weeks, but I'm blessed that I don't have to add a sad story with that. It's all been good busy, but busy nonetheless. Just missed you all so much. I did a search but can't find concentrated answers to my quest. I'm interested in the types of gates that any of you use at the top or bottom of stairs. With our elderly cat, we still can't let Coby have the run of the house. We have a tri-level and currently use the cheap wooden baby gates on both stairs. We don't use the tension, just "prop" 'em. But smart little Coby has learned that a skinny little nose at the bottom and some patience can move the gate without it falling over and grant him access to the Holy Grail - THE CAT .... oh and the cat food and the cat litter too!!! OOOH LA LA!!! :dribble::yay_jump::dribble: What kind of gates do you use and what are the pros and cons? Any pics? I'm ready to buy but only want to buy one time (Returning things is my achilles heel). Peace all, Diane |
I use baby gates - so no help here. But my folks installed homemade, hinged, slatted, hanging baby-like gates - which lock. They are stained and finished to match the trim in the rest of the house. They look very nice and I'm sure they can be removed with just a little patch work and paint to the wall. This is something I considered - but fortunatley, we don't need 'em now that Bailey is potty trained. |
1 Attachment(s) I use this one I got at Target because we can all step over it and I just open the little door to let them out. |
gates Rover Co. Vinyl-Tech Industries: PVC portable kennels and Kali Ko Kathouses I use PVC gates, beds and pens...had them for years, can't destroy them. I even had a patio 16x16 playyard fenced with it.. |
Homemade Gate...not the prettiest...but done on the cheap! 2 Attachment(s) My husband built mine for the stairs. I just can't see spending the money they want for these gates. We have a farmhouse so I had him use some old barn wood to make both the gate and the pen that Zoe's babies stay in. We just attached chicken wire to the boards. However, I had to then cover the chicken wire with material. We thought we bought the small holed chicken wire...but it was the big so of course the first thing the babies did...stuck their head through the holes. Now we do use a regular cheap gate with another doorway but on the stairs we needed something that would open and close. Only problem with it...its fits for a left handed person ???? We're all right....haven't said anything to him...yet! |

I have this one too. It works great for using on the bedroom doors. For the rest of the house I have this: Freestanding Pet Gates I love that it is free standing! I am able to move it anywhere in the house....in seconds. |
Thanks all! I love hearing and seeing your ideas. Since I found YT, I spend less time trying bad ideas. I just come here and check with the experts to find out what works for people! Quote:

Pvc I never had a choice...my puppies chewed wood..! |
1 Attachment(s) We put up a tension gate, and it has worked well with Buster. He likes to jump and put his paws up on it, but he hasn't found a way to climb out of it (yet). |

And might I add - that picture is adorable!!! |
:aimeeyork I got mine at Walmart. It works well, and we have had No problems using it .It is a little high and i can't climb over it, but it fits the front door well, and tightly. I also have a deck, and live on the second floor. I had to be careful what to buy too. :aimeeyork |
This is the one that I use to put my girls to bed in the kitchen. Dream Baby L792B - Extra Tall Hallway Swing Closed Saftey Gate in Black |
We have a plain Babygate and Maya never tried to jump over it or climb it or chew it ..... it was there since the day we moved in so she leaves it alone ... LOL |
I have to use this one: http://www.csnbaby.com/asp/show_deta...d=FR51-EVF1070 because my little Yoshi is a Houdini and climbs the metal ones and plastic ones. The one above is soft mesh that he can't climb and he can't hurt himself. It is also nice to use for hallways because it stretches extra wide! :) |
We have three... one at the top of the stairs, one at the bottom and one between the kitchen and living room... they are made by KidCo... We like them because you don't have to put them up/down all of the time, they are sturdy and are pressure mounted so they don't damage the walls :-) http://www.sitstay.com/dog/supplies/servlet/product_10001_10001_40348_-1_Center+Walk-Thru+Gate_13313_13325_[/URL] |
I just got a new gate that I love. I got it from Lowes. I think it is called "Safety First." It is a baby gate and works so well!! It can be a pressure gate or you can mount it. I mounted mine. I love it!! I had the cheap wooden type before and had to always step over the gate or remove it completely to get to the room. But this one will swing open either way and has a lock on it so that they can't accidentally knock it open. Plus it is made so that if you want to remove the gate, you just pull it up to remove it (hinges of course will always stay in place). It would be great for the top of the stairs and is inexpensive. You might want to give it a try!! |
Here is a short little video of my baby gate and how well it contains the dogs :) |
3 Attachment(s) It's too funny that I found this thread as we just put up a new gate last week :) I absolutely LOVE it! I wanted a wood gate to match my floors...didn't want any plastic or anything that would stick out like a sore thumb, so I chose this one and couldn't be happier :) It is made of course specifically for pets and as you can see in the pictures, it has a doggy door that you can choose to keep open or locked closed. Tatum wasn't too sure about it at first and wouldn't go through it AT ALL for the first 2 days or so (she was scared as always!), but after watching her big brother hop through it like he was part of the circus  lol, she got the hang of it and figured out that it wasn't going to hurt her :p They both hop through it now like nobodies business! We all love it and have gotten so many compliments from people telling us how nice it is  It's funny, I never thought people would compliment me on a PET GATE  lol. |
This is the gate I'll be using. Got it at Walmart. Clear plastic, no place for them to get their paws in to climb. 30 1/2 inches tall, can be mounted or tension mounted with a door that opens. Walmart.com : The First Years All Clear Plastic Swing Gate : Health & Safety |
I LOVE your video of your girls climbing over and going under the gate... When I first adopted Franklin I gated him in the kitchen to come home that day and find him in the living room playing tug of war with a dog toy and one of my other dogs...I never gated him again after that... |

1 Attachment(s) I am glad I read this thread. I just ordered THIS Evenflo 1196C - Wide Spaces Swing Gate one. I use an x-pen opened out across theBIG archway from my entryway into my living room. It keeps all of the babies except for Ladybug and Tilly out of the living room where my teddy bear collection resides (we never use the living room, our time is spent in the family room) BUT with this setup, whenever the doorbell rings all 6 of them run to the door and I have a hard time opening it without them trying to run out. I have been using a babygate between my front door and the screen door, but becaus eI am short I have a hard time stepping over it. I can kill two birds with one stone with this new gate. I can place it all the way across the other end of my entryway and they cannot get into the living room OR to the front door. And I doubt my monkey Rainbow can climb this one.. Here is a picture of her at the Kansas City meetup. |

I have one climber, Scampers. He can't jump over, he has to climb over it. Expens are no problem for him and the wooden one I had he would climb over in seconds. He hasn't been able to climb this last one though that I just got, I am pleased how well it is working but I will definately keep this gate in mind in case it doesn't work out. Thanks for the link!! Mine does have the same handle as this one, and I just love that feature. It makes it so much easier to lock and unlock it and open it. |
I bought all of my gates from Target. The first two were in the baby section. They were the extra tall because I have one dog that will jump. They stay up with tension and have a gate you can open to walk through. Much better than trying to step over, as I seem to catch my foot on the puppies' ex pen. I have just about killed myself and any puppies that were directly under me when trying to get over the 2 foot expen. The third gate I have not used yet. It was on-line in the pet section. It is the one with a gate for people and a smaller gate for pets. (Don't actually have it home yet. A friend picked it up for me, it was a return and so it was on sale.) One with a walk thru door is the way to go!!! Much safer in my opinion |

I used a gate once. Bailey was a puppy (about 3 months old). I put the gate up to keep her in the kitchen while I went to take a nap. I shut the bedroom door because she was crying at first. When I woke up, there was no crying. When I opened the bedroom door, Bailey was right there looking up at me. I couldn't figure out how she HOUDINI -ed out of the kitchen. So, I put her back in and watched from an angle as she slowly but surely climbed up it and got out again. No more gates for Bailey. |
