??? about long drive home...
 
:confused: I will be bringing a little girl Yorkie home in about 8 to 10 weeks and it will be about 3 1/2 hours drive for her on the way home. That is not including us stopping for breaks or getting lunch/supper. Did any of you drive a distance to get your baby? Any advice on a way to have a smooth ride home, I don't want her unpleasant. Also it will most likely be hot so I will have the AC on so we are comfy, should I still bring a blanket to keep her warmer?? Thanks for any advice you might have for me:)

I have no answers to this one, adorame, but I'm really interested on what others might have to say. I'm probably going to be in the same situation, so here's hoping others have something good to add.

Anyone have any thoughts or tips? :)

I had a two hour drive to pick up Heidi for my wife. I took a small cage for her to sleep in, but I found out in 5 minutes that she didn't want to ride that way. The only thing I could think of was to hold her the entire way home. She went to sleep while I was holding her against my chest. My arm was sore for a few days from holding it in a weird position for so long, but it was worth it keeping the baby comfortable. Good luck.

well, i drove through the blizzard of 2008 to get my puppy...he did great.
51 hours to get there :eek:and 14 hours home :) ohio to tennessee... the best puppy in the world.. 3.5 hours is nothing.. congratulations..:animal36
she will probably sleep.. i got my guy a stuffed animal from cracker barrel that looked like his mom:aimeeyork

If someone else is driving, I would hold her and bond all the way....Hold her close to hear your heartbeat and give her security...

We were not driving as long as that but we were stuck in alot of traffic. My recommendation would be to get your partner or a friend to drive whilst you hold the baby. I did this with Tia, it was perfect, God sent the traffic for us as it gave us precious time to bond. Before the drive home, Tia didn't like me very much :p

cesar49 - you drove for 51 hours :eek: :eek: :eek: I've heard that Americans do long distant driving but 51 hours is unbelievable, I couldn't do it lol

Drove 6 hrs and back
 
We drove 6 hrs to pick up our Calli and then 6+ back home, we made several potty stops along the way. She did fine. We had a pet taxi for her to ride in with a couple of towels in case she threw up from the car ride (other than drinks along the way, we didn't feed her til we got her home). She did great, slept most of the way. We also got a piece of cloth she had been sleeping on along with her mommma and brothers and sisters so she had familiar smells around her both for the ride and when she arrived at her new home. I hope this helps.

Thank you all for the information!! I do not drive due to having a seizer disorder so my husband will be driving me, I am so worried about her getting car sick, Jeter's breeder was a short drive home and I held him for the 20 minute drive.

Wow 51 hours!! In a blizzard non the less, wow!

I will be driving a little over an hour to get my girl. I could go get her sooner but hubby wont have a day off till then. Thats why I am waiting, so I can hold her and bond all the way home. It would be a 2 1/2 hour dive, but her wonderful breeder in meeting me 1/2 way. I will also have a blankie and rub her mommy's scent on it so she has the scent to comfort her. And I will bring extra towels just in case she gets sick. The blankie would be a good idea for her to keep warm too, just in case the ac is to cold.

My drive was similar. About 3 1/2 - 4 hours long each way. I brought a carrier, a blanket, a stuffed animal, her harness and leash, water and bowl, and a towel (which came in handy because she did get sick once). I also brought my mom and a friend to help.

I was told that it's safest to keep her in her carrier. I tried, but she wanted none of it so we took turns holding her. She fell asleep on me at one point so I transferred her to the carrier and she stayed in there until she woke up.

Glad to hear others have done this before! The more I think about it, we'll have a 4.5 hour drive home, if there's no traffic. It's going to be a longer drive than I'd like but we'll handle it. I'm more concerned about taking care of her, and how to handle rest stops... But it's looking like the boyfriend will drive and I'll be bonding with the pup in the backseat! :D

Kacee slept all of the way home.:D

The only thing I want to warn you about is that you'll probably want to watch her instead of the road and it will be hazardous to your health!:D

Yep, I brought those things along too and hubby did the driving. I was afraid of just holding her while we were driving in case of an accident and she did ok, didn't mind being in the pet taxi. I still don't hold her when she goes with us, she always rides in her taxi. I feel safer that way and she doesn't seem to mind, in fact when she sees me getting the pet taxi out she gets all excited.

3.5 hours isn't that bad..that's how far I am from my parents house and my dogs do just fine the whole way. To be honest, they sleep probably 90% of the drive. I put each of my two in their own crates, put them in the back seat and take off.

Since you're just getting her though, it's probably almost a given that she's going to be scared and whine alot it left alone. So I say it's up to you if you'd rather hold her the whole drive or start now getting her used to her crate. It might also be a good idea to stop about 1/2 way to let her have a potty break.

:D My A.J is the same way. The only time we use his pet taxi is when we are going somewhere and he knows it! I get the crate out and he goes crazy. He'll paw at the door until I open it and then just lay in it until it's time to go!
