Other people's impression of a Yorkie..
 

I was in line the other day at Petco and this lady picked up a Yorkshire Terrier Magazine and made a comment about how mean they are. And that her friend had one and not only are the Yorkshire mean but yappy. So the man behind her was like yeah he think so too. So she put but the magazine and i step in between them to get the magazine.

I find it kinda funny because prior to getting my first Yorkie (Tootsie) I too had the exact same impression. But look at me now, I now have 4 yorkie and still wanting more...hehe

Just wanted to share this with everyone. hehe

That seems to be the general consensus...I hear that a lot from people when I say I have a yorkie.

Me too. I always thought the breed to be yappy and nasty years ago.
Now look at me. I have a sweet boy who was never yappy and far
from mean. Unless your a big dog who he does not know, then stand back:( We're still working on this. He has come along way but there are times
he forgets. I thought the samething about poodles. I guess I heard
it from someone and just believed it.

hehe...i guess i associated them being mean from their yappy-ness...i guess they are big dogs in little bodies...and they just want to protect what is theirs...hehe

I think all dogs have the ability to be yappy..it comes down to how you raise them. I was telling hubby I want another dog for my birthday. I might want a maltese..he says aren't those mean yappy dogs?

You can say that out loud ....

My Parents Neighbors owned a Bakery back then and they had 2 Yorkies and they NEVER yapped or seemed mean to us kids ..... doing research online before we got Maya ... I found in every Post that exact saying (yappy and mean) ... strange ....

And by the way EVERY DOG barks here and there ..... :D

hehe that is funny...i never heard that about Maltese...i love them to pieces...hehe...

i too want more Maltese...i have a litter due towards the end of July beginning of August...i can't wait to be surrounded by puppies again..its been long overdue...hehe

hhehe...i guess it all depends on the ones you run into...i had my impression since a little girl...it seem as though every yorkie i came across as a child were yappy...hehe

yes ma'am...hehe...Maltese puppies...hehe...i will post some pictures from my last 2 litter with Kaine and Kandie...they make cute teddy bear face babies...hehe..oOo maybe you should get a Maltese...they are just as precious...hehe

hehe...since I only have Kandie...I only have 1 litter a year...so you see it's been long over due...hehe...I can't wait....i see everyone's yorkie have puppies and its driving me nuts...I still have a long ways before I will have my 1st yorkie litter...but I have been breeding Maltese since 1999. Not with Kandie, I had another maltese name Sugar that some stole from my mom's house when i went to Michigan to work for 2 months...and the day I came home which was a week after she was stolen, my niece was outside (she was only 3 or 4 at the time) recognize sugar...so she called out to my dog...and my dog turned and looked at her...so i ran outside and sure enough it was Sugar...so the lady grab sugar and dragged her inside and put down the garage...i ran across the street ringing the doorbell for over 10 minutes no one answers but i seen Sugar's nose through the curtain...my dad came home and seen me and asked what i was doing...i said trying to get back my dog...and he was scared, being that he isn't from America he was afraid i would get sue or something...i said if she don't open this door i may end up in jail for breaking it down...anyways he wouldn't like me call the cops because he was afraid that if I mistakenly accuse her then she could sue me. so the next day i posted a lost dog poster on her front door...and she had the nerve to come over my parents house to tell me she will help look for Sugar...knowing damn well Sugar was in her house...its kinda funny since i heard her daughter tell her you better take her in before they see her...right before i ran over there....people these days...then go figure the move out the next week...

that is why i thought they were mean when i was a child...

Everyone, I told that I was thinking about getting a yorkie had negative replies. They do have a reputation, but how many people have experienced it first hand or heard it from others, I don't know. I think with any small breed, there is a temptation, not to train because it doesn't seem as important, and an untrained undisciplined dog of any breed can be a nuisance. If it weren't for Yorkietalk, I probably would not have had the courage to ignore all the negative comments, because Joey doesn't fit the stereotype at all. Your babies are adorable, Maltese is my second favorite.

aww thank you! Maltese is still my all time favorite and I guess i love the Yorkie breed just as much...I would have never thought in a million years that I would own a yorkie yet alone 4...hehe...

I had never thought nor heard yorkies are mean. I will say...before owning one...my neighbor had them and I pretty much thought of them as...Jill's yappy little dogs.

well, I have to be a partial bad guy here.... I DO have a yappy/"mean" little girl. Hope is the MOST precious thing ever, but she HATES everyone but me and my daughters! I have to HOLD her when someone comes over or she will BITE ankles.

and YES, we have worked on training, and still do on a daily basis. I have a very busy household but she just will not get it... I continue to work with her and hopefully she will get better but some of the tiny pups never give up.

ON THE OTHER HAND, Tootie is the sweetest, most lovey cuddly thing... sometimes I think he will fly cuz his tail goes so fast.. haha... He does go after everyone, but for KISSES, pets and fun playing....

guess u could say I have the best of both worlds.. :)

aww it sounds so fun having Tootie there...hehe..i hope HOPE realize that not everyone is bad...hehe...

i had a neighbor that her female yorkie which was tiny..whom was mean...i mean this was just last year...she does not care for other people or dog to be near her..but i guess there can be mean ones in any breed...hehe

Mine hasn't got a mean bone in her little body. She loves everyone.

She does bark a lot though. lol.

no i am not kidding...and to make matters worse...they wanted one of her female puppies but didn't want to pay $400 for her...which was a year before they took her...

and at the time they took her...she was also 1 month pregnant...these were the same people that wanted to buy Kaine from me when i didn't even want to sell him...they kept asking and asking and i said no...so they went off and bought a male maltese some where...then once i had my first litter of Maltese they wanted of the 3 females and i even let them take her home so they can see if their male gets a long with her...which he did but they kept trying to bargain the price...i was like i am barely breaking even for the puppy...which shots, vet check and the time spent in taking care of them and momma...i guess some people are just scandalous like that

$400 WOW! I was researching Maltese and Yorkies before I got Mika, but all the (genuine, theres loads of scammers) pups I could find anywhere near me were £1000+(approx $2000+) and the £1000 pups were not even KC registered!!!

BTW I'm glad in a way because now I have Mika and wouldn't be without her!!!

TEMPERAMENT: The Yorkshire Terrier seems oblivious of its small size. It is ever eager for adventure and trouble. This little dog is highly energetic, brave, loyal and clever. Affectionate with its master, but sometimes suspicious of strangers. It can be aggressive to strange dogs and small animals. In other words, it has true Terrier heritage. They do best with older, considerate children. Yorkies are easy to train, although they can sometimes be stubborn. The breed is demanding and dependant and needs a lot of human attention. The Yorkie is an excellent watchdog, defending its territory in no uncertain manner. They can get snappish if surprised, frightened or over-teased, but are usually very sweet and loving. They can be difficult to housebreak. These little dogs should not be over-protected, for they may become neurotic. The Yorkie likes to bark, but it can easily be taught not to do so.

This is what I had read about them also. So I was terrified of treating my boy as a toy breed. Anyone else..heard this? :confused:

yes that is what i said...but look at how scandalous they are for them to steal my baby...i was glad i didn't sell them my puppy...but now they have my baby...i just hope they treat her well where ever she is...
