Picking a Puppy! Hi, I'm new to this site but I've been reading on it for a while now .. Anyway I was looking for responses from people who maybe have or have had the breeds listed cause I know the answers are all gonna be a yorkie lol But I really would like honest opinions.. Anyway.. I am getting a puppy in a couple months and I've been researching a lot and I have 3 choices.. 1.Yorkie The pros are they are my favorite and everyone I've ever known was as sweet and cute as can be. The con is the potty training, I've heard that the boys dribble everywhere, even after potty training. 2.Maltese I love how they are calmer and I've heard they are a lot easier to train plus they are also just too cute. But I don't know if the upkeep is going to be too much keeping its coat super white. 3.Chihuahua I think the puppies are the cutest things ever! But I don't like the bulgy eyes when they get older and I'm afraid they are going to be too hyper! So my question is which one do you think would be the best? I want a cute dog that loves to cuddle and won't be too hard to train. Sorry this is so long.. |
We tend to be a little biased here and think Yorkies are the best and the only best. With the exception of Codie the Maltese. I think Yorkies are the smartest and in my experience, easiest to train. I've had Coco potty trained and she is only 5 months and she does oodles of tricks. I also believe that depending on the parents, yorkies can be calm as well. Coco has certain times of the day when she's just snuggling with me. A YORKIE IS THE ANSWER!!! |
I will say Yorkie is my choice. Regarding potty training with consistency and patience is manageable. Godd luck in your decision. :) |
nugget is a male at just over 3 months and hes very potty trained... you just have to make sure to take him out often so he doesnt have accidents. as for dribbling, if you cut his little pee-pee hairs youll have no problem with that as far as i know. the hair gets a little moist, but thats gunna happen with any dog. just get the dog you want! figure out all the little stuff later. its a learning experience. once you get your dog you'll fall in love, and you wont have any problem teaching him or her. also, there are products out there to help with potty training- such as potty pads that your little buddy will smell and go potty on them. they also have housebreaking liquid that the dog smells and knows to do his thing where you drop it. if you have any more question i'm sure everyone here will be more than happy to help! find a good breeder to get your baby from! hope this helps! |
I would say go with the yorkie. I have a malt and a yorkie. My malt was easier to house break but he does have barking issues, he's a one person dog, I wouldn't say that he is calmer but he is less active and less playful. Maltese grooming is a major consideration. Chihuahuas shed so I wouldn't choose them because I don't like dog hair everywhere. I know a little dog hair doesn't bother most people but it does me. They are cute, sweet little dogs though. |
I go for Yorkies and Maltese - they have the sweetest personalities. Chihuahua's are darling, but every single one I've been around (and in South Texas that's a LOT) is very high strung and shakes so much - I just can't deal with it. I'm sure there are some that are not, but I haven't met one. Yorkies are so funny though, I guess they have just enough terrier in them. Housebreaking shouldn't be a problem with any - it's just consistency and patience. They are babies. It takes time. |
And lots of praiser and treats . dogs will do anything for a treat. ;) if you get the male nutered before he is too old you shouldnt have a problem. The masltese i use to have, I couldnt keep brushed. one was harder than the other. 4 times a day id brush that dog and it had lots of rats each time. I like the long hair and would of gotten a dog with short hair if id had to keep it cute. The chihuahua loves to be held but, they are vocial. very if someone strange comes. I love my Yorkies. :D ... I love to hold and cuddle with them. and they want on my lap. They are so sweet. I love combing them out. I love everything about them. Some of them wear clothes. :D |
ooppss reporst..SORRY i cant delete it |
i go for yorkie and maltese. i personaly think Chihuahua's are sweet but i dont know...i dont like their eyes bulging. maltese and Yorkies ARE better with little children. Also, more Maltese like to cuddle thqan Yorkies.. Rex has his "moments" of cuddling, but only if he is tired. but i really like Yorkie and Maltese. my baby Rex is both :p |
I say Yorkie!!! hehe!!! My Luigi was very easy to train!!! We were very consistant with him with the going outside thing!!! And as for the dribbling-- I don't have a problem with that. But I am very anal about cleanliness, so we have a box of baby wipes and a towel at the door. When he comes in from outside- I wipe his peepee area and also his butt! Then I dry him off!! He doesn't mind it- we have been doing that since we got him!! Now we are at the point, if I don't wipe him- he just stands there looking at me like--whatcha waiting for!!!! And Luigi loves to cuddle!!!! Luig loves all dogs so far that he has gotten to know!!!! Has yet to meet one he doesn't like!!! But my friend has a maltese- and she is the sweetest thing!! ! The only thing about her is that she really doesn't like other dogs at all!!! She growled and growled at Luigi the 1st time they met!!! Now she will TOLERATE him, but that about it!!! But they are very pretty dogs!! And from what I have noticed- she was very easy to train, and loves to cuddle!!!!! Chi's- I have never really even been around them, but they do seem like wonderful pets!!!! So I say- go with your heart!!! Which ever one makes you good when you are around them!!!! Good Luck!! And let us know which one you go with!!!! |
Thanks Thank you all for your opinions.. I need a dog like Rex.. a little bit of both! Lol, I remember a while back a lady having an accident and it was maltese/yorkie mix and that would have been wonderful, especially since I'm looking for a dog to love and not one to be perfect in someone elses mind... just mine! I really think It's between a Maltese and a Yorkie, I love them both .. its so hard.. I think I'm going to worry about finding a breeder I like and whichever breed it is then that will be my choice, and then once I move out of my house and with my boyfriend we can always get a playmate for the puppy .. : ). |
Yorkies Rule in my house! :yorkiesar :yorkiesar :yorkiesar |
We have had many breeds and I loved them all, The all need love an attention, But I can say theres some thing special about the Yorkie. My little Minnie will lay in my lap 24/7 if id let her. And she was so easy to potty train, she all most taught her self. I had only took her to her peepee pad a few times. She caught on really fast. So I will Pick the Yorkie. lol |
I have both maltese and yorkie. The two are a great combo together. I would say it depends on your personality of which would best suit you. Both breeds can take a long time to potty train, some up to a year to potty train. All males can have dribbling problems no matter what breed. |
:aimeeyork YORKIES OF COURSE ARE THE BEST :aimeeyork I have had 4 yorkies in my lifetime (and many other breeds), but I must say. I love, love, LOVE the spunky-ness, the adorable faces, personality, and they are very smart. My male Sebastian (11 months) he has me wrapped around his lil' paw so bad even I have to check myself some time. He has SO much character, he has a reputation at puppy class that he OWNS the class at 5 lbs. LOL. He struts around plays with the big dogs and small dogs. If a dog is shy he will try to get it t play with him. I can take him anywhere with me. He knows what he wants and WANTS it NOW LOL he is so vocal, if he could talk he would never be quiet. I love it. Yes, he is a brat, but that puppy was born to be my dog. I have never owned a female dog, and now we have Sweet Pea (a yorkie) she is 5 months old. She is a little sweetie. Not as outgoing as Sebastian and barely peeps a sound. But, she has spunk when she is arournd Sebastian. She is not the dress me up I"m gonna be your lil' prissy doll. Oh no, unlike Sebastian she loves the dirt, loves to dig and be a little tom boy. She doesn't like her hair up nor does she like clothes on her. But she is the sweetest little thing. Maltese are VERY cute, but I was a little concerned about keeping that white fur white. Good luck, you have made good choices. |
