Yorkies are my favorite. I haven't had a maltese, I would rather not have a white dog, I am way to anal, the poor thing would be washed to death I'm afraid :p ! I have had chi's, my hubby's favorite. We have one now that's really pretty, not all chi's have bug eyes and the long haired one's are very nice. Our Cosannah is a love, all puppy's can be hyper but Cosie is a little over one and is the biggest cuddler/kisser we have ever had. They do shed though and she is vocal - but so is Lida Rose! Lida is about 4 months and almost potty trained, I think it helps if you have another dog, she follows Cosie's example. Cosie trained really fast, she is fastidious (one of the things I love about her) sometimes she will hike a leg to keep the peepee from getting on her little foot when it starts running. She is also good about letting you know she has to go and will not give up. Lida is starting to do that too because she's learned from Cosie. I would suggest looking at several different pups of all the breeds you are interested in, when you fall in love you'll know what breed you really want! Good luck, if you pick a yorkie though you are in for a real treat! |

I have 1 Maltese and 1 Yorkie and I think they're a great combo. Katie is a bit active then Codie. But whe I take them to the beach or a park, there's no stopping Codie! I honestly love both breeds. The only thing that I find easier is combing Katie's hair because it's straight and fine. I keep Codie's hair short so it tends to wave. Luckily, he has NO tear staining whatsoever (which is RARE for his breed). If you do not like pink/red staining by the eyes and mouth, then this breed is not for you because most Maltese have this problem - I just got lucky with Codie. But as far as personality goes, they're both loving and sweet natured dogs. Good luck!! Let us know what you decide and post pictures when you get your new baby!! :D |
Ooops I forgot to mention about training. I got Codie when he was 3 months old and he was potty trained in 3 WEEKS! I got Katie when she was 5 months old and it was A LOT harder to potty train her. She's stubborn just like her mama. :D But now she's totally trained and such a good little girl! |
If your heart's desire is a Yorkie, go with that. You will have to have a LOT of patience the first year. If you want a beautiful, calmer breed that isn't maybe as fragile, loves to play outside, and is hearty, check out the Westhighland White Terrier (Westie). Just an idea. Maltese really are nice too. Every dog is an individual regardless of breed, even though a particular breed will produce a lot of similar traits. |
.. Thanks.. I guess I'm going to have to just go to a couple diffrent breeders that I like and whatever dog I love the most I'll choose. Because It's too hard to pick between the two without knowing the puppy its self. Because all puppies have diffrent personalites and you can't always go by what the most common traits are. Thanks for all your opinions though, I'll deffinatley keep them in mind. |
Yorkies are the best. You won't be disapointed if you get a yorkie. They are lovebugs! :) |
I have yorkies and chihuahuas. They both have thier ups and downs my chihuahuas like to cuddle alot and they are sweet. As far as grooming them wash and go. Remy some times likes to cuddle but he is runing thru the house to let everyone know that he is the man of the house. For me I pick both. |
Hard to train? Nope! Kacee is 4 months old and is housetrained! :D I've never had a maltese; just yorkies and chihuahuas. I have a soft spot in my heart for chihuahuas, too. To me, they're more of a lap dog than a yorkie. Of course, I've probably just had the more independent yorkies! :D |
Yorkies are the Best! But I am biased. :yorkiesar :we're #1: :animal-pa You're right. They all do have their own personality. You should choose in person. You can't tell by a picture or someone else's opinion. There are probably people who don't like Yorkies but don't tell that to anyone here! |
I never had a yorkie until a little over a year ago and now I have two. They are wonderful pets. Mine were potty trained by 6 months, but it does take a lot of consistency and patience. I believe it takes some people longer because yorkies are so smart, they know exactly what to do to get your attention. They have terrific personalities and I wouldn't call mine hyper, they are playful, pretty much all the time and they will bring a toy to you and aggravate you until you play with them. I have girls, so dribbling isn't an issue. One reason I like them so much is they do not smell, or shed hair everywhere. They are smart, clean, loving and small. And, lastly, those faces are to die for. |
