Proud Momma/then he got sick!
 

Buddy went to the vet last Sat for his annual. He was so scared. He wanted
to go home with anyone who was leaving!
When the vet put him on the table the assistant was holding him and the
doc went to the front of him, at which time Buddy showed him all his TEETH.
The vet commented on how beautiful they were then MUZZLED HIM.
He weighed in, gaining about 7ozs more than last year, at 16.3ozs.:eek:
Everything checked out great, vet said he was beautiful, shot him up
with his vaccines and home we went. About 1 1/2 hrs later Buddy was
not himself and went downhill fast. He couldn't even stand up. I had to
carry him outside to potty. I was a wreck but know some have after
effects, this was his first time reacting like this. He did stand enough to eat and drink but was so weak.
Yesterday got better in the pm and today he seemed fine until he
threw up before I left for work. I pray it passed now and he will be his
silly old self when I get home. I talked to the vet and he said so many
do react to the shots but he was surprised Bud did being so big.
I don't like the fact that he got all of them at once but he has never reacted like this in the past. Lymes, Borditella, Rabies and the 6 in 1. I guess it can happen at anytime. Vet checked his file and said he even got the same brands as the past year excluding the Rabies.
Please keep Bud in your thoughts today in hopes he's better when I get

Oh, I'm so sorry Buddy got sick, I wonder if it could be the rabies vaccine, since it was different from last years. Like so many others here, I've come to know and love Buddy too, praying for a speedy recovery. By the way, did the vet comment on Buddy's beautiful teeth or was the muzzle the only comment?

I hope Buddy will be good as new when you get home. He just got over nervous at the vet's.:)

OH NO !! We just had our annual Friday and I took the day off to be with the girls just in case of something like that...but they were fine ...slept all afternoon and the runs but nothing like that - You must have been so scared !!!

I'm so sorry he had such a bad reaction to the vaccinations !! IS he better ? Poor Buddy - I'm sending you lots of positive vibes that he feels better quickly !

Yes V it was so scary. To see this big silly boy be so limp and helpless
broke my heart. I was so pissed at the vet but it wasn't his fault I guess.
He kept looking up at me thinking what did you do to me mom? I sat
with him almost all afternoon into the night and prayed he woke up in the
am. He did but was still listless. I am sure it's the Rabie shot that did this.
It's the first time this happened.

I am glad Buddy is doing better. There is no rhyme or reason to what causes the reaction. My Jewels had one on her third set of pupy shots and then she didnt have anymore untill this yr at her 3 yr annual shots. I will be watching for updates on Buddy but hopefully all is fine now

Poor Buddy - I hope he's feeling a lot better! That seems like such a lot of vaccines to give to him at once. Tell him Matty and Kalina said hello and they hope he's doing ok now. :)

There is much new data out about how our dogs should be vaccinated. The new protocols call for vaccinating no more than every 3 years after the first adult booster as the immunity levels remain high enough to forego annual vaccinations. The 3 year protocol is actually a compromise as the vaccines have been shown to be effective for longer than that. In most states, by law, the rabies vaccine must be a 3 year duration so it is senseless to give it more often than that. If that is the case in your state, your dog is protected for at least 3 years with the rabies vaccine and you are within the law also. Many don't give the lepto vaccine because there are 4 known strains of leptospirosis and the vaccine is only good for 1 of them and its effectiveness is questionable. Lepto isn't a big risk unless your dog drinks water contaminated by an infected animal (usually wild animal) or licks an area where a mouse has peed or such. Most Yorkies don't risk exposure due to them not running loose unless you're in a rural area. Over-vaccinating dogs year after year can have a cumulative negative effect on their health. Many vets still cling to the annual vaccinations as a way to do business but if you google 'over vaccination in dogs' you'll get a lot of good information. Sorry to hear about Buddy's reaction and I hope he's doing better. After researching this subject, you may want to re-consider if you want him vaccinated annually. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)

that's what mine just had too - rabies etc - I have to by law... and with all the cats in my courtyard I'm taking no chances, but would have freaked out too if I saw what you saw....:(:(:(

I scheduled mine for Friday so I had the weekend with them but man - I never would have expected that either so I can imagine your fear....Poor Buddy - I'm glad he showed his beautiful teeth ! sorry about the muzzle though

My three monkeys got their vaccines on Friday. The two little ones (6 pounds and 6 and 5 months old) and the doc gave them rabies along with. I specifically asked him if it would affect them and should they be given separate and he said they would all be running around fine with no ill effects. Both of them had bad reactions, like the other times. Ceasar was stiff, lethargic and when I picked him up he cried like I was killing him. I held him very still and he shivered. The little girl could not even stand on her back legs.

I was praying for sure. This morning the little girl threw up, but they are better. I just wish they would be honest with us like when we take our kids to the doctor and just say, well this could happen or that....and here's what you do for it...but nothing. He must think I am stupid. :thumbdown

I bet your were a basket case too. Your babies are small too. I hope
they are both doing well today. I have heard of this but never experienced
it with any dog encluding Buddy. I will really look into this vaccination
thing before next visit and just hope and pray my little boy is himself
when I get home.

Thank you Christine for this information. I will do just that. I know there
is something called a teter test to see how much of the meds are in the body but I trust my vet and I guess I'm just naive and will have to learn to stand
up to him. After experiencing this Bud depends on me to keep him healthy
and happy I feel I let him down. My vet swears he needs these shots and I do trust him but next year I'm going to ask for the teter test first and see what happens. Thanks again,

It's so scary becuase we do depend on our vets to steer us the right way becuase they have the formal education that covers this. I decided that Zoey will have her first adult booster and then go three years in between. My dad has been telling me forever that dogs are being over vaccinated.

The titer test is accurate but can be expensive. I trust the new data as it comes from many respected sources including leading veterinary schools. I switched vets some time ago over this issue. It's up to all of us to be pro-active when it comes to our babies' health. The info is readily available so researching it is quite easy. Best of luck to you and Buddy. I think so, too. I never get rabies at the same time as the others, because I'm scared of too many at one time. So, next time, split it into two visits at least a few weeks or a month apart.

Gosh! I hope he's better by this evening. I know how you must feel. I had a little one have a reaction once. It's scary.:(

I always split up the vaccinations with my dogs. They get the rabies by itself and then the others a couple of weeks later. I don't get any vaccinations for my 11-year-old Bichon any more except rabies, which is required by law. I wouldn't get any for my 9-year-old Bichon, but he is a therapy dog, and the certifying organization requires the vaccinations. I will get vaccinations for my little rescue Chihuahua for a few years and then will suspend them, too. I hope all vets will be giving vaccinations a lot of attention and going with the extended protocols.

I wanted to let you all know that Buddy is feeling much better.
He's almost back to his silly old self. Thanks to all of you who kept
him in your thoughts yesterday. I really appriciate it and so does
Buddy.
