Do people mistake your dog for another breed? Maybe this just happens to me because Itsy is a mix (yokie/poodle), but I take her out for walks all the time here in the city and people always stop me to pet her and ask if she is a schnauzer, or a shih tzu. She has been called a schnauzer by almost everyone we've seen and a shih tzu by a few others. I don't get it. To me, she looks more like a Yorkie than anything else. Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me? |
People ask me all the time if Smokey is a mix or if he's a Silky because he's bigger (13 lbs). |
With Rocky no, but with Bella people always ask if she's mixed since she has no hair..when I tell them she's purebred they ask if she's shaved. |
i get pretty much all the time with Kuma he is about 9lb and people ask me if he is a schnauzer. lol |
i never get anyone asking if she is a different breed but they never know WHAT breed she is... i always get.. so what is she? lol... maybe its' because she has a short coat and still has her puppy colors. |
Nobody has ever asked me what breed Rudy is. But, and I can't believe this, but some lady actually asked if Lucky, my Shih Tzu was a cat? :confuse2: |
No, do not ask what breed but they do say OH Seth is so big!!! He is about 12 pounds now. |

We took the girls and went up to San Luis Obispo to a dog fair a couple months back and we had to park a couple blocks from the park and walk past some houses. An older man came out on his porch and ask if they were Schnauzers and we said they were Yorkies. On the way back to the car, the same man came running out of his house and kept saying Schnauzers, Schnauzers, Schnauzers. That was so mental! I have had other people ask if the girls were Silky's and some even ask what kind are they. |
My Yorkie's always confused with a greyhound cause he runs so fast with his tiny little feet! |
If you think it's bad with a Yorkie...try owning Biewers! |
I think it's just that there are a LOT of people that don't know which breeds are which. People ask me if Teddi is a lot of things and the same with Cassie or they will just say "what kind of dog are they." |
mickey's never been mistaken for breeds. but little kids do ask what kind of a dog mickey is lol i have once mistaken a silkie for a yorkie i kinda felt bad. i was walking my mickey and there was a girl around my age walking her silkie and the silkie looked like a yorkie (it didnt have a very long snout) so i was like omg what an adorable yorkie u've got there. and she's like oh no, she's a silkie. and i was like oh i'm sorry! though, my cousins dogs get mistaken a lot. my cousin's got a white terrier & a white maltese and people think they're mother & daughter. but then again, i'm in korea where people don't see many dogs outside. |
I always get asked if the Malts are white Yorkies?:eek::eek: |
Some people at a dog show thought my Skye Terrier was a Briard puppy!!! |
People don't usually ask me about Brooke but they ask me what my 3 lb. chihuahua is!!! I always think, "What else can she be?" A rat?!! Sometimes I fool with people and say she is a chihuahua/rodent mix and they actually believe me!! Silly people!!:p |
Maya is no Yorkie ... she is a ....... STINKER ... he he he .... :D |
People seem to know what Tink is........Yorkie.......even with her floppy ears! But saying that most people that stop to chat to Tink are other Yorkie owners, others just go aaaaaahhhhhhhhh as they walk pass.:aimeeyork |

Hi, I also have a Yorkie-poo. He looks 100% Yorkie. Even his groomer says he looks totally Yorkie. Coco's father was the poodle, the mother Yorkie. Cindy:) |
thanks for all the replies!:) I'm glad it's not just poor Itsy who gets mistaken for other dogs. She feels much better now. :p I guess a lot of people just aren't that familiar with different dog breeds. |

Most of the time, people just ask if she "is" a Yorkie and how much does she weigh (why does that question always get asked??), but she has been called a rat once or twice :D:D:D Of course, you all know, the ones' that said that were complete idiots and did not deserve a response :p:p |
It was odd, when Slade was a puppy and I took him out everyone would be like "oh look at the cute yorkie puppy". He has a yorkie face, but none of the yorkie coloring so it was odd to me that people would say he was a yorkie. I don't really take him many places (this town isn't very dog friendly), but when I do people usually ask what kind of dog he is I tell them he's a MUTT! usually they look at me in horror that i called my own dog a mutt, but its the truth and i really hate the whole 'designer dog' trend so I avoid calling him a 'yorkipoo' at all cost! |
I only have been asked what the girls were and how much did they weight... |
1 Attachment(s) I either get asked what Tucker is or if Tucker is a silky. Who knows...maybe he is! |
My groomer thinks Chachi is a silky. He is a larger yorkie |
Only once. I was walking Tucker and a lady asked if he was a shih tzu. Our friend from church was playing with him and asked if he was something....(a breed I can't remember the name of) but she's blind, so it doesn't count. ;) |

When I first got Gus, one of the girls I work with used to say, "Are you sure he's not a silky?" Her boyfriend's mom has two Yorkies, and somehow she thinks this makes her an expert. Um, no, he's a Yorkie. She was really making me nuts with this for a bit, but she finally dropped it. Sheesh! |
