Lifting leg when he pees? The other day me & my husband were talking about Bear & why he doesn't lift his leg when he pees. He always squats lol, & I always thought that male dogs lift their leg when they pee?!? My husband said that male dogs lift their legs to pee if they see other dogs doing it & that it's a learned behavior, not an innate one. Do your boy dogs lift their leg when they pee or do they squat? Is this normal for him to be squatting instead of lifting his leg? Amy |
How old is he? Franklin squatted until about 5 months, I think. Then he lifted his leg. I'm not sure what makes them do it... |

duke lifts his leg, and my other male dog did too...and neither of them saw other male dogs doing it (I didn't have them at the same time) |
If he is only 9 weeks old, he will continue to squat until he is about 5 months old. If you neuter him early he may never lift his leg to pee. My 7 month old yorkie does both....not sure how he decides if he is going to lift his leg or squat but he usually squats if he isn't around anything to lift his leg on and if there is a plant or something then he lifts his leg. Your little guy is so young and tiny....he has lots of growing to do before he will have the strength and the agility to lift his little leg.:):animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
I don't think watching other dogs has anything to do with it. Some do and some don't. Sunnie has always lifted his leg after about 8 months old. Beamer on the other hand is over 13 months and he watches Sunnie all the time.. But he has NEVER lifted his leg. |

You have so much to look forward too! It's SO funny watching them learn how to do it. Dougal thought he'd mastered it and threw his leg up with reckless abandon, overbalanced and fell on his back! Dixie also cocks her little leg. We have a little griffin cross friend who was about five months and hadn't cocked his leg til he went for a walk with Dougal, who led by example! :D |
I've never seen my Bryan lift his leg.....but he's only 4 months old:) |
Rigger is 2 yrs. old and he does both. I think sometimes he is just tired and it is easier to squat! |
romeo didn't leg lift until he played with other males that did it. he learned by following them. |
Lifting is not a learned behavior. They lift their leg to direct the spray when they are marking with the urine. Rambeau only does it when he finds a dandy piece of grass to mark, otherwise he squats. Bigger dogs seem to do it most every time but I still catch my three year old labs squatting if they are just in the middle of the yard. Melissa and Rambeau (It has to be just the right piece of grass!) |

Slade is over a year and he still squats, he has sisters and hasn't really been around male dogs all that much. He did lift his leg one time btwn 4-5 months and I immediately went inside and called to schedule to get him neutered! I've seen him do it maybe twice since then, but 99.9% of the time he squats. |
Meeko just turned 7 months and has never lifted his leg. He's been to the dog park a bunch of times and has seen male dogs lift their leg but, never started. I got him neutered when he was 6 months told. |
Little Man is 5 months and I've only seen him lift his leg once. I had just took a shower and got dress. I was putting my hair up in a pony, when I felt something wet and very warm. I looked down and he was marking me! I didn't scold him or punish him for it. I did tell him that it was a no no and I will always be his mommy. That he didn't have to pee on me everytime I got ready to leave the house. Then I laughed at how funny it actually was. Since then he hasn't marked me or anything in the house. So, he still squats! I figure that will change soon with us being outside alot during the day. |
Thank you everyone for your responses :) When hubby wakes up I will have to tell him about this thread ... & that he was WRONG hahahaa. ;) Amy |
My boyfriend used to say of Sampson when he was a puppy, "when's he gonna learn to pee like a man!" |
Hot Rod for sure tried to lift his leg to pee once-I think he was about 5 mos old at the time. He sought became unbalanced and put it back down and squatted. He's done it 2 other times outside but I think it was more uneven turf that he was on. I hope he never lifts his leg totally because we are going to keep him on the pad for boating reasons. |
Mine does both -- and he is neutered. Outside he mostly lifts his leg, but inside on his piddle pads, he squats. The sometimes he squats outside too. He's confused! |
Reese is a 1 1/2 years old....he just recently started lifting his leg. |
My Mac is 12-1/2 weeks old and he's been lifting his leg since he was 9-1/2 weeks old (honest!). I had posted about it a couple of weeks ago and someone else said their male started early too. It's not everytime as Mac only lifts his leg about 25% of the time - otherwise he squats to pee. :animal36 I also have a 2 year old male Shih Tzu that has never lifted his leg to pee. |
