I'm a new mom to an 8 year old 15lb yorkie! I never realized they could get so big :) |
I think I read somewhere that the biggest Yorkie on record was 22 lbs. That was some while ago, may have changed (larger) since ? |
i was so unaware yorkies got that big...ya'll are so informative! |

It's unfortunate, that recently, there are many who would choose one of the Toy Breeds, have a fixation on having one that is very small. This has put a terrific burden on Breeders to cause those accommodations. Those who have resisted, should be applauded. Often, an experienced Owner doesn't understand the Health Problems caused by downsize breeding, and experiences a life long periphery of those, and frequently a premature death. |
Excuse the double post... The last line should have read, "an inexperienced Owner" Darn that five minute Edit rule ! |

I remember I really was clueless about dog breeds standards/etc when I got Jackson. I just wanted a puppy. I thought he was soooo tiny when I got him. Only 6lbs. Then I went to a mini Yorkietalk meetup and realized how gigantic my 7 month old puppy was :p:D and that the size he was when I brought him home is how big Yorkies are supposed to be! :p He's more... Westie or Border Terrier sized. But I prefer it so it doesn't bother me. |
What a handsome boy Jackson is.:) |
The original Yorkies were actually quite small. Recently, as we celebrated veterans day, I saw posts about, the now famous, war hero, Smoky, the Yorkshire Terrier who fought is WWII. He was so small he fit into his new owners helmet even though he was full grown. He was 4lbs and about as rugged as a dog can be. If you can find his life story it is worth the read time. I know he/she? has had a lot of press over the years. https://www.facebook.com/smokywardog These dogs had a much wider gene pool I'm sure and their size was not achieved by the bad breeding practices used today in order to downsize a breed. |
