Hi name is Julie and I am new to board. We are on the waiting list to get a yorkie puppy so I decided to research more and join a discussion about these little babies. So when we get ours I am prepared to do what I have to do to give him a stable, loving and happy home.

I have already started searching for the right clothes, leash, collar and bed. SO if you know of anyplace to shop please feel free to pass it to me. Also if you have any important information I need to know please do share it.

Welcome to YT! And congrats on getting a Yorkie =o)

I get most of my stuff (clothes, blankets, etc) from GW Little Pet Supplies Dog Clothing for Small Dog Breeds - GW Little some of their stuff is kinda expensive but it's the only place I really know of to get stuff from other than local pet stores.....

Don't buy a collar, you need a harness for them. Collars are not recommended as it can hurt your baby.

Welcome to YT, so nice to meet you. You'll find TONS of useful and helpful info here and the members are awesome! Just one thing that might be of help to you, not sure if you know this or not, but it's best not to use a regular collar on a yorkie or any small breed for that matter, as they are prone to collapsed tracheas. It's best to use a harness. Good luck and again, welcome to YT!

Welcome aboard,

If you want to dress your yorkie get it use to clothes when they are young. All of mine were dressed alot when thet were puppies and love getting dressed now. My boys love to be handsome and the girls like to be pretty. :D

Oh I did not know this at all. I was looking for the diamond collar also. WOW I have already learned something very valuable.


Thank you both for that life saving advice. Now I have to look for a good harness for him. At what age should they be put on one? I would assume that since they are so little that there is a different method?

Welcome to YT! LOTS of knowledgeable people on here to help you out!

You've already gotten a KEY piece of advice — NO collars — at least not for walking on a leash. Some people use them for their tags, but definitely not for walking!

Cant wait to see pics when you get your new puppy!

Hi there and welcome, you have come to the right place ,before you have a little one to pamper.:D Read all the post you can on potty training and diet etc Dont be afraid to ask questions someone will always offer advice.:)

Welcome here!

Hmmm....find out what the breeder is feeding the pups and decide if you are keeping him on that or switching. This site is a great place to help with which foods are full of "crap" and which are healthiest for your pup.

Get lots of toys and chew things. My pup loves soft toys that squeak....and bullysticks for chewing.

Wellness Just for Puppy makes a great soft treat for training....the pieces are big so I break them into smaller bits.

Hi Julie....WELCOME!!!! You will find a lot of helpful people here and a lot of information here. It is really great that you found this site so early. I didn't find it until I had my yorkie for about 6 months!

You're most welcome. It's a good idea to start using a harness on your lil one when you get him or her, just when you take them outside for walks, to go potty or to go anywhere. I actually took Maggy May to our vet and purchased one there, they fitted her for it and showed me how to properly adjust it as she grows. I tried to tell my daughter to do the same but she's got a mind of her own and just learns the hard way, lol. She has a lil chiuahuah and went to Walmart and bought one (lost the receipt of course) and couldn't take it back. So, she went to Walmart again and bought another one, lost the receipt AGAIN and this one is to big and can't be adjusted down far enough to fit Luke, so, she has to go out and purchase yet ANOTHER harness, lol. Save yourself some time and money and either take your lil one to the vet and have him or her fitted for one (if your vet sells them there) or take your lil one to the store with you and make sure it fits before you purchase it. Can't wait to see pics of your lil one!

There is a YTer that sells silk harnesses on here, they look fab and are reasonable. They are made to fit. Maybe someone can post the link or her name here for me, I forgot who it was.

Another thing you may want to get to keep on hand is some Nutrical or Kayro, toy breed dogs tend to get hypoglycemic (blood sugar level goes dangerously low) if they don't eat enough. Having some of the above on hand in case of emergencies is a very good idea. If you switch puppy foods from what the breeder is feeding him or her, make sure you switch over slowly by adding some new food to the old food and gradually lesse the ammount of the old food until it's the food you are switching to, normally this takes about a week. This lessons the chance of tummy upset and is easier on their bellies. Not sure if the pup will have it's vaccinations when you get him or her, if you have to finish up shots, I recommend not getting the lepto as many yorkies have had problems with the lepto. Do some research and read up on vaccines and over vaccination, you'll find some very interesting information. Hope this helps.
