Are Yorkies different? I've been on Yorkie Talk since I first got my baby almost 2 1/2 years ago -- and the devotion of the members to their dogs is so awe-inspiring. I have had dogs before (two toy poodles that were my family dogs growing up), and I loved these dogs dearly and am still heartbroken over losing them. But, the way I feel about my Archie is sooooooo much more passionate than I even felt for those dear pets. Everyone on here (including me) seems to be just mezmerized by their Yorkies. WHAT IS IT about Yorkies that makes them so special? I absolutley ADORE my pup in a way I never thought I could. I can't imagine adoring a child more (I don't have any). It's just really a strong feeling that is sometimes overwhelming! Is it just the Yorkie personlity that inspires such devotion -- or am I just crazy and/or nuerotic? Thanks! :D |
You're not crazy at all! I feel the exact same way about my boys. I think it's a combination of a lot of different things. They are a beautiful breed. They have wonderful personalities and are energetic and fun. My boys require more attention than any other breed I've owned. I think yorkies seem to need more nurturing. They are very human like in so many ways....mine seem very child like. They know how to communicate what they want. Also, their faces are so full of expression. I love their little faces and their eyes!:) |
I so agree with you!!! I love my Yorkie so so much & he is my life! I do actually have a skinbby, & of course I love her to death, but there's just something about my Yorkie that's really special :) I'm so happy that I decided to get him & bring him into a loving & caring home. Definitely the best decision I've ever made!!! Amy |
For me, my pit bull mix trumps all other dgs i've had and will have she's the first baby i've owned on my own. SHe rocks my world. many mornings she's been my only reason for getting up. Don't get me wrong, I love slade too, and he'll always be my baby.. but he will never compare to laney. |
if your crazy and neurotic then i'm right beside ya hun!!!! Yorkies are definately a different breed ;) I also have never felt so much love, caring and compassion for Koda, Kammie & ^i^ Allie than I have ever felt for any of my other dear pets....notice I can't even bring myself to call the furbutts pets?!?! They're my furbabies and I love them like I love my skin babies! Call me crazy and I WILL answer you!!!! :) |
I am totally with you on this one!!!! |
thinking and typing..... just to add some reasoning, as I am sitting here Kammie is snuggled against me so tight I can feel her dreaming! The little twitches, small sweet moans and the fluttering of her eyes as she is sleeping is something I just sit and stare at. And Koda with his precious face laying on my lap in such a sound sleep like he trusts me with his life to protect him now and forever. Such a SWEET SWEET sight the 2 of them. Oh how I love them dearly so deep in my heart. Oh no, hear come the tears, getting emotional now, lol! It's these Yorkies, I tell ya!!:D And they are sleeping in their matching handmade nighties they got from their GE buddy Paris (2parises) the nighties are blue w/ white cloudes on them.....such a dream they are! |
I totally agree with you too, yorkies are more like children than any dogs I've ever had. Are there any other dog sites out there with more members than YorkieTalk, 32,000 members, that alone tells you something. |

I find myself getting emotional over my yorkies too. I will be watching them play or sleep and start to get all teary eyed, thinking how lucky I am to have them in my life.:) From the time they wake me up until the time we go to bed, they bring me total joy!:) ETA: Right now, Jackson is sleeping next to me on the couch. Jake is sitting here staring at me, then looking at my laptop, like "mom, that THING is on my lap again"...lol I LOVE THEM!!!!! |

Hot Rod is my first dog ever. I have lived with friends that had dogs but I was not their mom. I do not know life before I got him. I had and LOVED my two cats to no end. Hot Rod probably was a mill dog and I when I think about how he was bred for money it makes me really sad. I feel as though it is up to me to make his little life as good as it can be. I truly am the lucky one, I am blessed to have been able to have him come into my life. He is just so loving and affectionate that it takes my breath away...I rush home just to spend time with him and I love our walks and playtime. I love how he greets me when I come home and all the kisses and hugs I get. My favorite part of the day is just before bed. We snuggle on the couch and he falls asleep in my lap. Sometimes I go to bed shortly after that, other times I just stay and hold him for awhile. I just can't believe how a 3 lb ball of fur can turn me into such a bowl of jello. I love him to absolute pieces! |
I call Mingtoy my little haired person . She is so funny . When I am cleaning my room , she sit there and look if I do it right , its the same thing when someone is cooking . |
For me Yorkies are my heart, I got my first one in 1970 and had Yorkies until 1997, when I lost my Gracie at 6 1/2 to complications of a collapsed trachea, I was so devastated and my husband and dtr wanted a pom and I was to upset and let them bring Maya home. I love her but she just didn't make me feel like my Yorkies had so almost 3 years ago I decided to have 2 dogs at a time and got Cali, then added Pixie, Dixie (RIP) and Roxie. I am so addicted, they just enrich my life so much . |
It is definitely a breed that has made me certifiably bonkers. :D I have 4 other dogs that I love dearly, but none have captured my heart like my little Onni. She is such a delightful little furbaby. I was so excited last night when I took her out to meet my daughters friends mom and Onni let her pet her for a few seconds and then whimpered to go back to me!! I knew then she knew that I was MoM!! The Yorkie :aimeeyork is truly a special breed. |
I also have had dogs in the past who I loved dearly but there is most definately something different about the Yorkie. To me Buddy is more like a child than a dog. His personality is so compatable with mine it's almost human like. He understands me and knows exactally how to relate to me what he wants. He's always getting into something, much like a toddler would and keeps me laughing daily. Buddy speaks to me whenever he wants something and get's his point across without any problem. I do believe these little one's THINK about what they want and what they do. He is truly a campanion. |
I think that its the dog's personality that causes you to be so awestruck...or love struck as the case may be! I have a pit bull named Liberty (who my training business is named after,) a lab/pit mix named Lucy, and then my itty bitty boy yorkie Scooter. I baby all three of my four pawed kids!!!! My girls (Liberty and Lucy) think Scooter is the best thing since hamburgers! They snuggle with him, play with him, and just love him so much! Lucy lets Scooter "win" the wars, and she rolls over so he can pin her in a submissive position... Looks like people aren't the only ones smitten by a yorkie's aura!;) |

If this is not one of the cutest things! |
I have had lots of dogs but my Yorkies are so special. I really think they are different than any other dog. They do need more attention and have moods like a two year old. Maybe that is the reason they are so great? |

Ditto! I thoroughly agree with every one, I have 3 - Artie my male 4 yrs. old, Abigail my Alpha female 3 yrs. old and their baby girl Tiffany Aloha, nicknamed Pom- Pom, she's almost 2 yrs. old now! I grew up with Dogs, all my Life and I just turned 45 yesterday. I've raised Rottweilers, Pitbulls, Newfoundlands, Labradors, Dobermans and every Mutt/Mixed Breed stray that was ever Abandoned! The Love, Dedication, Devotion and Commitment that I have for my 3 Yorkie's is im-measurable. I have never taken such care in grooming, socializing and training in any other Breed or Pet that I have ever had in the past. They are very high maintenance menatlly & physically in every way. I feel like I can't live without them? I have never had any Children so I can't say I feel this way for any Human Being? I can replace any Boy Friend or Husband, but I cannot replace them. I wonder sometimes if this is "Normal" b/c I have never felt this way about any of my other Pets? That's why I am on YT. I have learned so much with every one else's help, it has made me a better Yorkie Parent and for that I truly "Thank" everyone! |
I have always been an animal lover but espically dogs. I am just as compassinate about my schnauzers as I am our yorkie. They are our children. We have no children at home and that even makes us more concentrating on them all the time. Just last nite my husband refered to them as his 3 little girls. Schnauzers talk, and they have this roo, roo, roo, thing going on and they try so hard to talk to you. It is really funny because they are known for that and Kayla will try to talk too. We try to get her going and I tell her to talk to us like her big sisters. lol!!! They are a hoot. I don't know what we would do without the little warts. |
I agree with everyone!! My two babies are wrestling around on my lap right now!!! I honestly thought that maybe I was a little OVER obsessed with my kids!! I first just had Roxi and said I would NEVER get two!! Guess what??? A week ago today we picked up Rocco, its so nice to see Roxi have a playmate, and they make my heart overflow with happiness!! They are SO beautiful, I don't have kids, and don't really want any, so they ARE my kids!!! I LOVE THEM SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!! I have been a dog lover my whole life, and I can say that owning a yorkie is different for sure. There is something very special and unique about this breed of pooch!! |
I know how you feel! I Adore my little Mia. I never knew it was possible to love a dog so much! She's my baby... people around me think I'm sorta crazy for spoiling her and worrying about her as much as I do! |
yes! Their faces and eyes, there is something so human like about their expressions! The cuddle time at the end of the day full of their sweet innocence. When my babies roll on their backs and give me their vulnerable tummy to rub, I feel honored to have a living thing trust and love me enough to expose their most vulnerable area to me for petting! :) Im in awe of my babies also! :) Ive always had other pets... but these boys of mine are something special. :) |
Don't get me wrong, I love my Jeter very much and my husband and 4 kids say he is spoiled to death ;) But I do not think it is Just the Yorkie breed that is treated like this, I belive it is how the person feels that makes them in awe over their dog. I have a sister who is divorced has a toy Poodle and she spoils Keeleigh just as much as I do my Jeter. She works 2nd shift and she brings her over to my mother's house ( thats were her 2 kids stay till she gets off work) because she doesn't want her to be by herself during that time frame she is not home. I know quite a few dog owners who have no problem leaving their dog for 8+ hours a day when they work. Keeliegh is called "sister" by her two children that are age 15(son) and 10 (daughter) My husband has a friend that has a Boxer names Jake, he takes him out to diner ( it's a bar but they serve food and will let you bring your pet) nightly and he even lets him sit on his lap as if he was Yorkie size LOL. He talks to him like he was his son sitting with him. He is retired and Jake is alway's with him. I also have friends, Scott and Kate, that do not wish to have children and instead they have a Weimaraner,Rebel, he has more toy's that any dog I know, He has to get his hair brushed daily and they show him a mirror to see if he approves too, he wares a pair of boxer shorts daily ( I really think he thinks he is a real guy) and they home cook all his meals. If some one offers him something, they have to know what it is were they got it from... He is one spoiled pooch. This same friend has been working with a committee to get a dog park here in our area( ERIE COUNTIE) She wanted a safe place to take him to play and socialize with other dogs, for about 4 years she has pushed and pushed to see this become a reality and now They announced that they are having a contest for a " name the dog park" at Osborn Park, talk about devotion for a dog! So really their are other people out their that are just as "CrazyNuts" with their special breed as we are ours:D It's nice to know that we are not alone in our "CrazyNut" world;) |
Years ago, when I first got Muffin, I read an article about yorkies and I will always remember it said that yorkies were almost human. Well, that was 1991. I'm here to say they aren't almost human. THEY ARE HUMAN!:D |
