Yorkie Snappiness

Hiya all,

I hope you are all doing well. It's just a question out of curiosity really. I've had Yorkie's since I was 7 years old and that is 17 years of Yorkieness. I've had 5 Yorkie's altogether Charlie Brown, Benji & Zak, Bonnie and Millie. Charlie, Benji and Zak were very snappy, Zak had to be re-homed as he was attacking Benji his twin brother. You couldn't pick any of them up without them biting you but they were full of love in other ways. We decided to have a female after Benji died and Bonnie came along 8 years ago and she wouldn't know how to bite if you tried to teach her lol. She's sooooooo soft and hasn't bitten anyone. Millie came a long 4 years ago and she hasn't bitten anyone either and she's not snappy either.

From experience I prefer females and wouldn't have another male but I was just wondering about your male Yorkies compared to females? Do you find that females aren't snappy but males are? I can only go on my experiences and am not talking for all male yorkies but I was just curious.

I'm sorry but I have a male Maltese and a female Yorkie, so I can't be of any help. But my friend has a male Yorkie and he's just the sweetest, most affectionate munchkin ever! I guess it depends on the individual dog and how they were raised and socialized.

Winston's Mom 07-29-2005 09:17 AM

I really can't tell you about all male Yorkies because so far I've only have one. Winston is very loving towards his Mommy and Daddy. He is not overly friendly with other people but will play with them eventually. He trends to run to Mommy to be held when he is around others. He is not a snapper or a barker. One of the breeders that I talked to when I was doing research on the breed said that boys have the tendency to be more loyal and less high maintenance than girls. All I know is that Winston kind of chose us rather than the other way around and we couldn't be more happier. We just adore our little boy.

A female Yorkie can be as snappy as a male if not more . IMO...this is an illusion to pretend that female are better than male . As a breeder , I found out that peoples are making excuses to have females over males . I have had a client that wanted a female from my first litter but there was just a male left , she decided to bring him home with her . Few days later , she called and told me that she never had a Yorkie that was such a cuddler , well tempered .

I only have a male yorkie and must say he's the most affectionate dog I've ever had. He constantly wants to be in my lap, follows me around, ect. I've had female dogs (never a female yorkie) and they've always been super independent; not as loving; ect. I definitely prefer male dogs over female dogs

Our male Yorkies were very affectionate too. They sort of picked one person usually my mother and wouldn't let anyone else pick them up. I don't have any prefferance of male or females. They were socialised with all my families dogs.

Well I was just curious of how other Yorkie's are. Thanks for replying.

We only have one female Yorkie and she can be very snappy. Don't get near her when she's already sleeping by herself, don't reach for her under the bed, don't take her bone or treat away. If you do any of these things she will show you her teeth, growl and snap at you if you get in reaching distance. I hope our new little girl that we're getting in 7 days won't be as snappy. IMO I think it depends on the temperment of the parents.

I have a male yorkie! I love him dearly and sometimes he does get too toothy for me but I would never call him snappy. He has never snapped or bitten but he does like to naw on fingers softly (I think he is teething). I have know many yorkies and other small dogs of both sexes and I believe it truly comes down to the individual dog. My grandma had tons of small dogs over her lifetime and the meanest one I ever encountered was female but like I said it is all about individual personality.

i have a male and he is a real sweetheart, he has never been snappy or agressive in ANY way..... even taking bones and reaching into the food dish (i did this constantly when he was littel so he would get used to it..... there are lots of little kids in my extended family and i didnt want an accident to occur)........ he will bark at the cat if she goes near his food dish (BUT NOT IN AN AGGRESIVE MANNER) and if she doesnt listen he will push her with his nose until she is a good three feet away.......... i think it all depends on how well they are socialized...... it doesnt just come back to yorkies either, most people rationalize this way about all breeds... personally i like females better (but that is just my preferance..... i have to reason such as they are "nicer") but i would never trade my little guy for anything

vainchick5 07-29-2005 11:14 AM

My little Coco has no snappiness in her. I don't even think she's a real dog, it's like she a snuggly boo teddy bear that comes to life. She spills her lovin' on anything that moves, or stays put.

socialization...

i agree with the whole socializing thing....we have two males and they are both very loving and affectionate....hardly ever bark and only one time the oldest has gotten snippy with me but that was becuase i was taking his little monkey away from him....

We used to have a female who came to us from a bad home and she was not socialized at all...it was very obvious...she would bark her fool head off at everyone coming to the house and would not shut up. she didn't want anyone touching her or cuddling at all. If you bent down to pick her up she would snip at you....she wanted to be affectionate only on her terms....and she would never look you in the eye.

I love my boys and heard males are more affectionate but i know females can be as well....its all in the socialization...

JCarlson2004 07-29-2005 11:17 AM

Both of my dogs are mush balls but I think it's because Jim and I are ALWAYS kissing and cuddling the. We NEVER EVER EVER EVER yell or (god forbid) hit them. They've never been hungry or cold or sad because I do everything in my power to ensure that they're loved and happy. But I think I made them just a tad too mushy. :D All they want to do in life is be kissed and I love it that way.

chachi 07-29-2005 11:21 AM

I have a male and a femaleyorkie and neither one is snappy. They have never even growled or shown their teeth. They bark ridiculously though!!!!!

I have 2 females and 1 male our male is the sweetest ever he is not snippy at all he is wonderful with my day care kids they all love him I would have to say he is the sweetest out of the 3, 1 of my females is a nasty nipper ,today one of my moms came to drop off her two kids and tried to pick up my granddaughter who is 1 1/2 josey tried to bite her and would not let her touch her she has done this before when the kids are dropped of she will not let the parents touch the kids, if I wasnt here I dont think they would even be allowed to touch their own kids, very possesive, my day care mom did not mind she laughed and said at least noone would be able to take them out of the house with her there, very good little watch dog we have to lock her up sometimes when strangers come or she will bite them if they get too close, my other female all she would do is pee on them lol.

Stomper is a boy. He is snappy, but not with other dogs. It drives me crazy. He has been extremely socialized from 8 weeks old on. Very comfortable and loving to all people. He is only playing when he snaps at us, but he is 8 months old and should not be doing this at all. We are extremely consistent and tell him NO and ignore him. It has not helped. I believe it is totally the personality.... Males probably tend to be a little more snappy because the are MALES. Hello!!!! Just kidding! :D
