Yorkie Snappiness Hiya all, I hope you are all doing well. It's just a question out of curiosity really. I've had Yorkie's since I was 7 years old and that is 17 years of Yorkieness. I've had 5 Yorkie's altogether Charlie Brown, Benji & Zak, Bonnie and Millie. Charlie, Benji and Zak were very snappy, Zak had to be re-homed as he was attacking Benji his twin brother. You couldn't pick any of them up without them biting you but they were full of love in other ways. We decided to have a female after Benji died and Bonnie came along 8 years ago and she wouldn't know how to bite if you tried to teach her lol. She's sooooooo soft and hasn't bitten anyone. Millie came a long 4 years ago and she hasn't bitten anyone either and she's not snappy either. From experience I prefer females and wouldn't have another male but I was just wondering about your male Yorkies compared to females? Do you find that females aren't snappy but males are? I can only go on my experiences and am not talking for all male yorkies but I was just curious. |
I'm sorry but I have a male Maltese and a female Yorkie, so I can't be of any help. But my friend has a male Yorkie and he's just the sweetest, most affectionate munchkin ever! I guess it depends on the individual dog and how they were raised and socialized. |
I really can't tell you about all male Yorkies because so far I've only have one. Winston is very loving towards his Mommy and Daddy. He is not overly friendly with other people but will play with them eventually. He trends to run to Mommy to be held when he is around others. He is not a snapper or a barker. One of the breeders that I talked to when I was doing research on the breed said that boys have the tendency to be more loyal and less high maintenance than girls. All I know is that Winston kind of chose us rather than the other way around and we couldn't be more happier. We just adore our little boy. |
A female Yorkie can be as snappy as a male if not more . IMO...this is an illusion to pretend that female are better than male . As a breeder , I found out that peoples are making excuses to have females over males . I have had a client that wanted a female from my first litter but there was just a male left , she decided to bring him home with her . Few days later , she called and told me that she never had a Yorkie that was such a cuddler , well tempered . |
I only have a male yorkie and must say he's the most affectionate dog I've ever had. He constantly wants to be in my lap, follows me around, ect. I've had female dogs (never a female yorkie) and they've always been super independent; not as loving; ect. I definitely prefer male dogs over female dogs  |
Our male Yorkies were very affectionate too. They sort of picked one person usually my mother and wouldn't let anyone else pick them up. I don't have any prefferance of male or females. They were socialised with all my families dogs. Well I was just curious of how other Yorkie's are. Thanks for replying. Chrissy, Millie and Bonnie xxx |
We only have one female Yorkie and she can be very snappy. Don't get near her when she's already sleeping by herself, don't reach for her under the bed, don't take her bone or treat away. If you do any of these things she will show you her teeth, growl and snap at you if you get in reaching distance. I hope our new little girl that we're getting in 7 days won't be as snappy. IMO I think it depends on the temperment of the parents. |
I have a male yorkie! I love him dearly and sometimes he does get too toothy for me but I would never call him snappy. He has never snapped or bitten but he does like to naw on fingers softly (I think he is teething). I have know many yorkies and other small dogs of both sexes and I believe it truly comes down to the individual dog. My grandma had tons of small dogs over her lifetime and the meanest one I ever encountered was female but like I said it is all about individual personality. |
i have a male and he is a real sweetheart, he has never been snappy or agressive in ANY way..... even taking bones and reaching into the food dish (i did this constantly when he was littel so he would get used to it..... there are lots of little kids in my extended family and i didnt want an accident to occur)........ he will bark at the cat if she goes near his food dish (BUT NOT IN AN AGGRESIVE MANNER) and if she doesnt listen he will push her with his nose until she is a good three feet away.......... i think it all depends on how well they are socialized...... it doesnt just come back to yorkies either, most people rationalize this way about all breeds... personally i like females better (but that is just my preferance..... i have to reason such as they are "nicer") but i would never trade my little guy for anything |
My little Coco has no snappiness in her. I don't even think she's a real dog, it's like she a snuggly boo teddy bear that comes to life. She spills her lovin' on anything that moves, or stays put. |
socialization... i agree with the whole socializing thing....we have two males and they are both very loving and affectionate....hardly ever bark and only one time the oldest has gotten snippy with me but that was becuase i was taking his little monkey away from him.... We used to have a female who came to us from a bad home and she was not socialized at all...it was very obvious...she would bark her fool head off at everyone coming to the house and would not shut up. she didn't want anyone touching her or cuddling at all. If you bent down to pick her up she would snip at you....she wanted to be affectionate only on her terms....and she would never look you in the eye. I love my boys and heard males are more affectionate but i know females can be as well....its all in the socialization... |
Both of my dogs are mush balls but I think it's because Jim and I are ALWAYS kissing and cuddling the. We NEVER EVER EVER EVER yell or (god forbid) hit them. They've never been hungry or cold or sad because I do everything in my power to ensure that they're loved and happy. But I think I made them just a tad too mushy. :D All they want to do in life is be kissed and I love it that way. |
I have a male and a femaleyorkie and neither one is snappy. They have never even growled or shown their teeth. They bark ridiculously though!!!!! |
I have 2 females and 1 male our male is the sweetest ever he is not snippy at all he is wonderful with my day care kids they all love him I would have to say he is the sweetest out of the 3, 1 of my females is a nasty nipper ,today one of my moms came to drop off her two kids and tried to pick up my granddaughter who is 1 1/2 josey tried to bite her and would not let her touch her she has done this before when the kids are dropped of she will not let the parents touch the kids, if I wasnt here I dont think they would even be allowed to touch their own kids, very possesive, my day care mom did not mind she laughed and said at least noone would be able to take them out of the house with her there, very good little watch dog we have to lock her up sometimes when strangers come or she will bite them if they get too close, my other female all she would do is pee on them lol. |
Stomper is a boy. He is snappy, but not with other dogs. It drives me crazy. He has been extremely socialized from 8 weeks old on. Very comfortable and loving to all people. He is only playing when he snaps at us, but he is 8 months old and should not be doing this at all. We are extremely consistent and tell him NO and ignore him. It has not helped. I believe it is totally the personality.... Males probably tend to be a little more snappy because the are MALES. Hello!!!! Just kidding! :D |
In general, both my female yorkies are sweethearts, very gentle, never snappy, get lots of attention and love/handling from me because I have a lot of time to do it. However, after a full day, the smaller one will get snappy at Chloe when it is close to bedtime and Chloe tries to get close to me. I have to put one on one side and one on the other, but usually that is a sign they should go to sleep in their kennels. They need a break from each other and I need a break from them. |
I had a minaiture poodle growing up who would bite men. I have never had a male dog that bit and neither of my male yorkies now or my male poodle are snappy! The play rough with each other and bite each other but not people. |
None of our yorks would even think about even showing a tooth in any direction unless we asked them to smile. We mouth train from very young and they also learn from their litter mates and mommas about whats okay and whats not. and off-topic, I see you're from Swansea! I was just there in April with my mom...and it's beautiful. My great-great grandfather emigrated to the US from there and we were doing a little family history research. Everyone we met was so nice. Loved the cakes but Do you actually eat the laver bread? |
Eurgh! No I don't eat Laver Bread. I'm guessing you went into the indoor market to see that hee hee! Cockles are nice though mmmm! What part of Swansea did you stay? What hotel? I live in Mount Pleasant which is in the city but I came from the Gower. Glad you like it I love it. I love living here so much! What cakes did you eat? Welsh cakes, Teisen Lap?, Bara Brith although that's more like bread, crempogs? There's lots of traditional welsh recipies and most of them are yummy. Well I'm tired now so, nor sta cariad! (hee hee a good night greeting in welsh) Chrissy xxx |
Yep, was at the market and ate Welsh cakes they were delish! I really wanted to try the laver bread, 'cause I think you should try everything ONCE, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. It looked like seaweed that someone already ate once (no offense). We stayed at the Beaumont Hotel on Walter Rd. and the proprietors were very nice. I ADORED the welsh language tv and signs everywhere. Walked the Mumbles(cute shops) and the marina, lunched at Morgan's and talked to nice people on the bus who didn't like Catherine Zeta Jones. I wished we had more time to spend there but we were off to France and Italy for the rest of our Grand tour. Darn it I'll just have to come back! G' Night To Abertawe! |
We brought Sadie home 14 years ago and she was snappy even as a puppy. I was so disappointed I had wanted a yorkie for a very long time. We put up with her because she bonded completely with my husband...( probably because he was the only person who wasn't intimidated by her...) Soon after we got a little male and he has been my baby. He is a sweet-heart. I don't think temperment goes by the sex of the dog but by their ancestors. I remember the breeder whom I bought Sadie from talking about not using her dad anymore because he was getting to grouchy. That should of been a clue... |
I have 5 Yorkies and only one is snappy and that's only when someone is leaving(family) or arriving(strangers or someone who isn't around a lot). We got her when she was 5 1/2 months old and I think that her upbringing has something to do with it. The woman I bought her from had been in the hospital for a month just shortly before I found her. I don't know who took care of her dogs while she was in the hospital but they didn't do anything but feed them. Oh, my biter is a female. I have 2 males and one is my little kissing devil and the other is so sweet but so independant. He is Pirogue my oldest male and I think he's trying to claim my 9 year old daughter for his. He sleeps with her, left my bed to sleep with her. |
Tilly is the snapper in our family! I have to watch her around my grand children when they get to close to me she jumps up to were Im at and is in the guard postion! and she will snap. sami he is the alpha male and 100% a mammas boy :D he is very posessive If I baby and love on tilly he wont have it he wont snip but he makes an entrance by jumping right in the middle and run his paw across tillys nose and jump in my face and kiss me all over. so I think snipping runs in both females and males, its just a personality thing :p |
Dear Sylvan, Yeah I have tried Laver Bread once and let me tell you it doesn't just look like someone has eaten it already but it tastes like it too lol. It is horrible. I am litterally two seconds away from Walter Road and I know the Beaumont Hotel. I live in Mount Pleasant which is by the Texaco Garage on Dyffatty Street by the big tall red flats only up the hill. I have a lovely view from my front Window as I can see all of the city and the Swansea Bay. I can even see the Marina, Port Talbot and Britton Ferry. On a clear day I can see Cornwall across the sea. What was your fave pub, restaurant, shop etc and is the food here much different to that where you are? Did you have fish and chips from a chippy? or did you have our traditional roast dinner or a full english breakfast? Take care, Chrissy xxx |
IMO, it's 100% on how they're socialized. Sully is an 11mo. old male and has never snapped at anyone! We were told by our vet and also by the trainer at petsmart (and other research I had done) to go thru a list of things every day with Sully when he was a pup. This included massaging his paws, messing with his tail, holding him upside down (like a baby, belly up) etc.....also we took him over to play with my toddler cousins every week, introduced our puppy to all of my coworkers, young and old of all sizes and nationalities, and to our friends, etc. Now compare how we socialized Sully to someone who's dog has never met another dog, never been petted by a child or had their tail touched by their owner....that is the dog, male OR female it doesn't matter, that's the dog that will end up being more snappy. IMO. ;) |
When we first were looking for a puppy I wanted a female, but Bandit picked us and he was a male. Well, he was so sweet that when we went to get Tucker we asked for a male. In fact I said to Megan recently "Why did we not get a female?" She said she didn't know, that's what we orginially wanted! But we got a boy because Bandit had been so sweet. Tucker does not snap at all. He is just as patient and loving and sweet, even when we are taking a "treasure" from his mouth! |
All my girls have wonderful temperament , they never snapped . |
Chrissy, We had a fabulous view from the Beaumont too and loved hearing the churchbells ringing over the rooftops. Unfortunately it was a quick sidetrip and we only spent the two nights there with one full day in the middle. We did have GREAT fish and chips and breakfast was wonderful and I am still missing the terrific coffee we had everywhere in Europe. I tried to talk mom into the Gower Coast Adventures boat sightseeing thing, but she wasn't up for it. We were too tired for pub after walking all day, especially up the hill to Oystermouth castle, just for the view...so I'll definitely have to come back and you can show me the best ones. You can e-mail me at sylvanyorkies@yahoo.com to chat more Swansea if you like. I afraid we are way off topic here, and I would love to hear more welsh ! lol Stacy |
