I should be indicted! Yesterday, all of us were outside in the pool, swimming and having a big time, and my husband left to go to the store. He left through the garage door, pulled the car out of the garage, and came back. About 30 minutes later our neighbor came up in the front yard hollering for us. She had picked Pookie up out of the street, and we had no idea that he had slipped out the door when my husband left for the store. He was walking down the street like he knew what he was doing. OMG he could have been run over, kidnapped, gotten lost...the list goes on and on. I learned my lesson. Anytime someone opens a door at my house, I'll be right there with them to make sure they don't let my baby out. Cause he can scamper out and you don't even see him. I love my baby so much, I can't believe that happened. I did pick up a thank you gift for my neighbor, cause she didn't have to take the time to do what she did. I feel so irresponsible, I feel like I've been a failure to my baby. Will anyone out there own up to this happening to them? It sure would make me feel better. Ya'll don't think less of me now, please!!! |
Well I NEVER!! Seriously, I think it has happened to all of us. Mine love to run out when I answer the door. They think it is for them all the time. I started putting a baby gate between the front door which opens IN and the screen door which opens out. Fits perfectly, but with my short legs I about kill myself stepping over it! Not long ago when I answered the door, they all ran out then all ran back in...... I THOUGHT! about 10 minutes later I heard a bark outside and opened the front door and there stood Sunnie waiting not so paciently to get in. During the last gift exchange, the UPS man came to the door and I thought I got them all back in. I started counting 1....2.....3.....4....5.................... lets try this again... Tilly... Ladybug....... Sunnie....... Sunshine......... Rainbow....... Beamer?? where is Beamer? I opened the front door to go look and there stood the UPS man with Beamer in his arms. Beamer followed him across the street and was trying to get in his truck. Thank Goodness he looked down before he drove off! Now the baby gate works great! |
Don't beat yourself up so hard. It was an accident and a good lesson learned (the best kind, everyone's ok:)). I worry about that too especially as the weather gets nicer and we're in and out more often. I'm so glad everything turned out ok. It's nice to have good neighbors that will not only watch out for our skin kids but our furbabies as well:thumbup: |
Believe me it has happened to all of us!!!! I'm sure it scared you to death!! |

yeah I think this has happened to all of us at one point or another :) Take it easy on yourself, count your lucky stars that he is fine! :) My boys ran out the door more times than I can count. :) You are not a bad mom! And that was very nice and thoughtful for you to have gotten your neighbor a thank you gift! |
When someone comes to the door Little Man is right there. He tries to go out when they come in, but doesn't quite make it out the door. He did get out one time. Scared me to death. Sheila (my cousin) came over to drop off my movies that she borrowed and to pick up a few more since there is hardly anything on tv anymore. Well anyways she forgot her purse on the chair, so I picked it up and went to the door to holler at her as she was backing out of the driveway. Little Man squeezed himself out between my legs when I opened the door. I screamed and she stopped. When she stopped he was just about to go under the front tire by the car door! My heart went to my feet and I felt so sick to my stomach. Sheila just sat in her car and started shaking and crying (she had just lost Pointer (Little Man's brother) a week before). Since then, he doesn't run out behind me or anybody else. He sits on the arm of the chair looking out or he will sit in the middle of the floor. He don't move until the door is closed behind the person leaving. Quote:

Once, I pulled up in the driveway to see a flier had been taped to my front door. I always go in the garage and we have a baby gate across that door to keep the girls in. I opened the front to get the flier and it fell to the ground. The whole time I was picking it up, I was "shooing" the girls back with my feet. I plopped down on the couch and started reading the flier and watching TV. About 5 min later, I heard scratching on the front door, IT WAS BABY CHLOE!!!! OMG she had slipped out without my even knowing. I dont know what she did for the approx. 5 min she was out, but we live near a very busy street and it is a miracle she wasnt killed or taken. Baby Chloe is such an airhead I cant believe she knew to scratch on our door. I felt so bad that I called my husband at work to confess. I was bawling and telling him about what a bad mother I was. I am glad you also had a happy ending. I thought I was being so careful, but I do a head count now any time the front door is ever open. I guess it is a blessing in disguise that makes us better Moms!!! |
this has happened to me too. we have a cat door that goes out to the laundry room. well... theres also a door that goes out to the garage. we had our garage open one day and aparently someone forgot to to close the door to the laundry room all the way. someone came knocking on our door and said "your yorkies outside" i look behind him and theres pebbles rolling around on our front yard. she saw me... got all excited and came running up to the front door.. but geeze... she was sneeky enough to get past who ever was in the garage... |
I can't believe I missed this post! I think you are very blessed, truly! Your neighbor (bless her heart!) found your baby and you may feel guilty (though you shouldn't), at least you were saved from not knowing where he was and having to endure that. I am so glad it turned out so well!! |
Something similar happened when Muffin was just a puppy. They are so fast when they are puppies, you don't even see them. Don't beat yourself up, though. You aren't alone. The one good lesson in it is that it teaches us to be super careful. Those are things we never, ever forget. |
You're certainly not alone here...it's happened with every dog I've ever had. Seems like no matter how careful you are, it's bound to happen at some point. Years ago when I had my sheltie Cassie (RIP) she would take every opportunity to bolt out the door. Little did she know, I always knew where to find her. She would run to my neighbor's house and sit at their front door, pawing at their door. She loved my friend who lived there and always went there for a visit. Silly girl!!! |
It certainly can happen to anyone and probably has happened to alot of us. I know that Hot Rod has run into my garage when I went to the freezer and then I didn't realize he was in there and closed the door. Thank goodness the outside garage door was closed! So don't beat yourself up, cause' then we'll all have to do it to ourselves too! |

I couldnt get my baby on a leash becuase of a surgery I had done just two weeks prior. I had my son take him out and John Wayne got away from him. I didnt even know that he was running around, my son was side tracked and figured he would just come back. But my knock on the door didnt bring good news. I felt beyond irresponsible and can really relate. There really isnt a day that goes by I dont relive that day and what I could have done different. I am so glad to know that yours is OK and that you have a second chance. It does warm my heart because I wouldnt wish this type of pain on ANYONE or ANYTHING. Unfortunately, they are sneaky little buggers and when they want something, they go for it. I am just so happy that this story had a happy ending! So, take comfort that these things happen and it doesnt make you a bad mommy or irresponsible. |
Buddy did it, too Our Yorkie usually stays inside, but there have been two times when he rushed out in a mad frenzy. Both times a LARGE male dog-not ours-was standing right at our front door. I've seen this large male dog visciously try to fight other big dogs, but SO far, he has run away. tail tucked, when our little guy chases him. Problem is, the big dog runs so fast, in and out of traffic and yards, and our Yorkie blindly, fanatically chases him like he's chasing a rabbit. Our dog doesn't get outside otherwise, and I don't know if he could even find the way home. Last time he chased the big dog several blocks away, and we drove around in the middle of the night until we found him. It makes you feel sick and your heart race from fear. |
