New to yorkies Hi, we just got our first yorkie ever 4 days ago. He is a beautiful sweet guy named, Alastor. We will be getting two mixes in a few weeks as well. My 1st question is if most yorkie puppies sleep most of the time or if i should be worried. He was born Jan 10, so is about 4 3/4 months old. I know younger pups sleep most of the time but thought pups his age are usually really curious. I though at first that it was just that he was getting used to us, but it hasn't changed at all since day one. He isn't scared at all but seems to not care if people are around or not, he just sleeps on the couch no matter what is going on. When I hold him he sleeps, in the car he sleeps, we took him to a fest in a nearby town and he slept in my son's stroller. He has been home with us since we got him and took him out for the 1st time this afternoon. He did get a clean bill of health from the vet and everything is coming out normal, if you know what I mean. If thats his personality thats just fine, I just found it odd. 2nd question, how do I tell if his coat will be wooly or silky and what should I watch out for with a pup his age as far as health and grooming? Thanks a ton, Alastor's mom |
Welcome to YT!!! There is a ton of information here to help you. We can't wait to see pics. :) |
Welcome to YT. We are so glad that you found us. Congrats on your new baby. Can't wait to see pictures. I love his name. |
welcome to YT! |
Alastor was named after Alastor Moody from Harry Potter. My kids are obsessed with HP. |

As for your puppy's disposition, I think it's normal. Different dogs have different dispositions&yours might just be a really calm&chill one. If you're really worried about it though, I would call your vet&take him in to get a checkup. Welcome to YT! I look forward to seeing pictures of Alastor :) -Amy |
:welcome4: to YT, :congrats: on your new addition to your family... I think it's perfectly normal that he sleeps most of the time, but soon that should change, and he'll be exploring everything, so enjoy it while it lasts... :2hearts2:I Love my sweet furbabies :aimeeyorkNygee, :aimeeyorkGizmo & :aimeeyorkGypsy!!:2hearts2: |
Since he is so very young you might want to make sure that he doesn't become hypoglycemic. Check to see if his gums are pink. Turning gray should send alarm bells off. Something called Nutra-cal, I think, Karo syrup, or honey rubbed on his gums should help almost immediately. I hope that my answering will "bump" this up and maybe someone will answer you with better info. From everything I have read on YT such very young ones are very susceptible to hypoglycemia. Good luck with you new furbaby! |
And welcome to YT!!!!!!!!! Enjoy. |
welcome to YT! Sounds like you may have a laid back pup. Does he interact at all and have a playtime? Is that Alastor in avatar? If so, I would say silky - because I see his eyes showing up with a green reflection. |
Hi, Alastor is the avatar. How can one tell from eyes what hair type they will have? He did chew on a toy tonight for a few min. for the 1st time since he has been here. Most of the time when I talk to and hold him he doesn't look at me or respond, however, when I was eating pizza tonight he stood on his hind legs to beg. That was the 1st interaction that he has chosen. Perhaps he is just taking his time to warm up to us? Do you think perhaps he was pretty much ignored at the breeders house so doesn't know how to interact with humans yet? humm... Well, with us he will get more interaction than a dog could want.:luvu: |
I have not seen a yorkie that is not hyper active. I don't know if that is common but I really haven't seen one like that. Maybe let the vet check his/her sugar count. Maybe he/she needs more of it. |
Hello and warm welcomes to YT! |
little interest in food Hi again, I have been watching how Alastor eats... and he barely does! I have now tried to get him to eat more often but he seems to have NO interest in food, other than last night he wanted my pizza. I am feeding him authority which is what his breeder said is the only think I should feed him, but I don't really know why she has that oppinion. I feed him a bit of wet mixed with dry. Do you think he has so little energy because he doesn't eat enough? I have taken to hand feeding him, even though I know that could cause a very bad habit, and he tries to eat a bit more that way but really doesn't seem to care if he eats or not. I also think he is rather thin, but haven't had a yorkie before. I can feel his ribs and hip bones but do think there is a very thin layer of fat on his brisket. I did just have him at the vet on friday and he said Alastor is healthy. Am I just being paranoid? |
Not eating would concern me and could be part of his being so tired. I would take him to the vet and have blood work done to make sure his sugar levels and liver functions are all good, if you haven't had bloodwork done already. Try giving him some Nutrical and coac him to eat. Keep us posted |
