Adopting a "rescue" Yorkie We have decided that we are ready to add another Yorkie to our family. We have Rigger and are totally in love with him and he just loves to play with other pups. He is two years old now. We were delighted with the breeder we got him from and would get another puppy from her in a heartbeat, however, we have been looking into the possibility of adopting a "rescued" Yorkie. I completed an application to adopt yesterday. Does anyone have any experience with the process? What can we expect? Is this a bad idea since the Yorkies are older and the background may not be the best? Any advice would be appreciated. |
I think its wonderful that you want to adopt. They are many here who have rescues and they wind up being the greatest. You may need to train a little longer as they probably never have had any consistent training, and they may be a little fearful, as the human contact may have be limited, but once they come around, you'll be so happy. :p Best of luck and keep us posted. |
It's wonderful that you have decided to adopt. As a Mom of an ex-mill dog you didn't say if your application was to a shelter or a rescue. After submitting your app. I really can't tell you just how long it will take to get a response. My experience was a phone call and also references which included my vets. We were accepted and drove a state and a half to pick him up. And also when we met face to face we could have been turned down too. For me personally it has been so rewarding to take our little guy and teach and show him how life should have been for him. You need to remember that these dogs have lived a horrid life. That being said it is not like bringing home a puppy. Their older dogs and surviving like they have had to do creates their personality. Our little man was so indifferent about everything, but he's been a member of the family now for almost three years. I never thought I'd get kisses or loves from him but we do. It requires patience, love and time but it is so worth it. Please keep us posted. Good Luck!:animal-pa |

We adopted a 2 1/2 year old Yorkie from a breeder two weeks ago and she was not in good shape at all! We had been thinking of getting a third Yorkie as a playmate for Wrigley and just figured we would get a puppy! When Yorkieshadow posted about this little girl being available, we thought we would check her out and we are really glad we did! I didn't know it would feel so good to take in a dog that wasn't used to love and attention and offer her a good life! I know we are going to have issues with training and so forth, since she has baggage :( but we love her already and want the best life for her! If you are prepared to put in the time and have the patience that it will take, then I say go for it! |

We got an email and they are considering our application!! The Yorkie we are interested in is 3 yrs old and 13 pounds..very close to Rigger's age and size. The photo looks like Rigger too. They look like they are the same color. We now know that he was surrendered by his original owners because they were having trouble house training him. Now I am worrying about the effect this will have on Rigger...he is such a baby!! He is our go everywhere kid. I think he will like a playmate, he is socialized to other dogs and the daycare I take him to when I travel to Macon for business has a Yorkie room that he plays in, but he is one happy pup when he sees mommy coming to get him!! I feel like an expectant parent...would you believe that I am an adoption coordinator for Georgia's children!! Now I can imagine how the families I work with feel!! |
In few minutes , I am going to pick up a little Yorkie girl in a shelter . |
The rescue organization has been in touch and they are checking our references!!!!! We are so anxious about this!! |

I will have my fingers and toes crossed for you. UYR is a wonderful organization and getting a rescued Yorkie is a very rewarding experience if you understand in some cases you have to start at ground zero. All of my Yorkies are rescue and while they brought some baggage they have all turned out wonderful and loving. I wish you all the luck in the world and many of us here are here to help. |

yorkie rescue I have a yorkie rescue, had for many years now, and he is the sweetest little baby. I worked for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue for many years, but hear good things about United Yorkie Rescue.... Have patience with the new baby....remember "dog's live in the moment" ..try to thing of him as a clean slate and teach him what it is you expect of him. you may want a "belly band" if your baby is not housebroken:eek:....We'll tell you where to get one if you need it :D(or make one)... roxanne:animal-pa |

one of mine is an ex-mill dog. It has been an experience. There will be good days and bad days.. They do take a little bit of work adjusting depending on their old life. I would rescue another in a heartbeat! |
Home visit went well. Now I guess we will just wait to hear from the organization. Maybe it won't be much longer. |

:thumbup:I received notice that we passed the home evaluation and that they were going to notify the foster mom to give me a call to answer any questions. Well, she called and what a wonderful lady! She answered all my questions and gave me her number in case we think of anything else. She said that our new baby is a sweetie and she is glad he will be going to a good home. He is three years old and 11-12 pounds. He was surrendered by his previous owner who could not keep him, but had cared for him well. I am hoping we can get him next weekend!! :jump28ib: |

Congrats on making the decision to add a new Yorkie to your family! Even better that you are considering adopting! Adopted dogs may be older, but they are usually kept, monitored, and trained in foster care so your chances of "knowing what you are getting" are actually best with a reputable rescue as opposed to a puppy from a breeder. All of the rescues I have adopted from or worked with have all required an application, home visit, spay/neuter contract (if the dog was not already fixed) and a contract stating that the dog is to be returned to the rescue if you no longer can keep or care for it. I suggest asking the rescue about the particular dog you are interested in, and if you can meet in a park to allow your dogs to meet to judge how they get along on neutral territory. Once you decide on a dog, here is some advice on introducing them in such a way that increases successful integration: LDT House Training Adoption is a wonderful option!
