Does everyone use peepads? I see everyone talking about them on here. Can't we just use paper? and won't it be hard to train them to go outside? They are expensive too!!! |
I've never used peepads, mine go outside:) |
Mine go outside too. |
2 of mine use pee pads 2 go outside. I can't get the two who use pads to go outside to potty. I used them because it was to hard to get them out in the winter when they were puppies. If you are home and can take him out frequently you may want to train outside. But you will need to take him out at night too. Pads are convenient but I prefer outside training if possible. My son lives ina na apartment and his dog is papertrained to actual newspaper as they cannot afford pee pads and it works ok. |
The only reason I use puppy pads is because I keep Bear in a play yard. It's for overnight use only&for when I'm not at home. I agree, puppy pads are hella expensive&they go through them so quickly! I'm training Bear right now to go outside because I don't want him trained on pads. I've read that you can use newspaper though, but you have to be careful about that because the ink can be toxic  |
I am home most of the time, so both of mine go outside more than using pee pads...but we found that having washable pee pads are great to have in the house. We have four that we bought from YT member Little Bit (Nancy). I think they were $12...and they are washable and last for a very long time. Cheaper then the disposable ones! |
Well we trained our last yorkie with paper in less than a month. 100% trained. That was 15 years ago though and pee pads were not around. |
I have only purchased 2 packs of disposable pads. Bella goes out side unless it is raining and i use the pads:rolleyes: So I have had her 17 months...so i guess we dont get much rain:D |
Franklin and Maggie both on pee pads AND outside. The only reason why I would prefer pads instead of just paper is one (like someone already listed) -- the ink leaks through and can stain the floor, and two -- it's absolutely NOT absorbent which is great for poop but pee will soak right through it all over your floor, leaving you with a wet stinky puddle EVERYTIME they pee on it. |
Usually it won't be easy to train a dog that is trained to go potty on a pad to start going outside, and vice versa. It can be done though. For Rocky we take him outside. I prefer to take them outside, but Bella is really small and since she has no hair, I don't want to take her out during the winter because it's too cold for her, so she goes on the pads. I wouldn't use newspaper either because I imagine it would soak through. I think it really depends on the dog as to what is better, outside or the pads. Another thing, Bella has A LOT more accidents. If we don't change the pad right away, she will find somewhere else to pee. Also, if we move the pad she still pees in that exact same spot, but on my carpet |
I used pee pads when we first brought Pookie home. And yes, you do need to use something that has a backing on it so it doesn't leak through and go everywhere. Just as soon as Pookie got adjusted to being home with us I took the pee pads away and just took him outside frequently. It was hard because it was in the winter and he didn't want to go out. But... we made it. He's 5 mo now and has very few accidents. He waits until I take him out. I didn't want him to get accustomed to peeing inside, so he didn't have them very long. |
We never used a pee pad. Paisley goes outside. I knew I wanted her to go outside to take care of business so I didn't want her to think it was ok to pee or poop in the house. |

They love to potty outside. But I don't like to go out in the rain or snow nor do I like wet paws. Little Bit's washable pads are awesome. The cute prints actually can "go with" the decor, many don't even show the potty spots, don't smell, wash easily, and, while not as much as outside, are environmentally better than pads. :) |

You can use newspaper, but it needs to be placed on plastic to keep moisture from going through. Or you could just place newspaper on a disposable pad and throw away soiled paper. I thought I was the only one who even got the newspaper anymore. :D I started training Joey to go outside, but use the pads for convenience. I didn't want to get up in the middle of the night and go outside, so the pads are great, and also just in case I ever have to leave the little darling. I agree with the others that washable pee pads are best, I made my own, but several people on YT make great pads that you can purchase. I don't think it's that hard to teach them to go outside and use the pads, dogs by nature just seem to want to go outside. Take them out first thing in the morning and after meals, they will learn to go. |

Same here |
Mine go both outside and on the washable pads inside. I think it is the best of both worlds. You can't always be there when they need to go outside and sometimes the weather just doesn't permit it. So a pad is there when they need it. |
mine have never been allowed to go inside the house for any reason! they alwasy go outside, and it was MUCH cheaper (free actually) and it was very easy. its more natural for them i think. anyway good luck!!! |

I think I will try the outside thing. I may be old fashioned, but the pee pad thing seems a little weird for me. |
I would like to know if there is anything special put inside the material on the one's that are made.. is it just material or something in it that makes them want to use it.. I only used pp pads on maravilhosa.. only because we were going away for a month with with the rv when we got her.. I would not let her down on the ground.. I always trained to go outside only.. she is now going outside. and missing the pp pad.. anne |

Mine go outside also, but they will use the pee pad if the weather is too cold or if it's raining, I just keep it near the backdoor for them. They do prefer to take care of business outside though. |
Mine uses both. Pee pads at night when he's in the bathroom sleeping and outside when he's not in the bathroom. |

I don't put anything special on it, but most do seem to be attracted to it from the beginning. It could be because they are made from reclaimed incontinence pads from hospitals. So, even though they are sanitized and we can't see or smell anything, maybe they can. Who knows? |
We have a lot of hawks and owls in the area. It is not all that safe for them to always go outside. We trained our girls to go on the pads for this reason. I will say that if they are outside they will do their business outside. We buy our pads at Sam's Club. ~Marly |
I guess I am the only one that use the dog litter:) which is good for me. My yorkie also goes outside. I decide to use the dog litter when she was little. The vet told me not to have her outside due to her weak immune system. So I decide to tried the pads but found out about the dog litter which I enjoy better than the pads. |

Roxi goes on the pee pad inside, and when we are out she goes outside... |
We never used peepads either. |
Both my boys are trained for pee pads and outside. I trained them for both because we get a lot of snow here in the winter, and it makes it very difficult for them when the snow is really deep. I use a doggy litter box with a pee pad in it. It's very easy to change and keep clean. I don't like paper because it has no absorbency whatsoever, leaves ink marks on the floor wet, and smells bad quickly. |
