My puppy hates me So Dodger came home last night. He's only liked my hand once in the ride home and when I've had to feed him Nutrical since he's barely eaten today. He's constantly underfoot, but recoils when I bend to pick him up (does he think he's going back to his crate?). Yet, once on my lap, he stays there, climbs up to my neck and hangs on to my shirt if I try to put him down. Sniffed through the night and exhibited what the breeder calls anxiety symptoms: coughing, sniffing, some shaking. Barks incessantly once in his pen or crate. BUT. Unlike yesterday, he does venture into his exercise pen and when I left for dinner tonight and came back, he clearly had stopped barking at some point. When does this end? Pictures soon....only 1/2 hour sleep last night. Little sucker ended up in my bed. Dodger |
When he is up near your neck, try talking softly and massage and pet him....this seems to relax puppies...will make him feel safe and more comfortable with you. Soon, he will want you to pick him up! |
It sounds like he wasn't held and played with a lot in his first home. Give him time. He will adjust. He doesn't hate you. He's just scared of his new surroundings. Congratulations on the new family member. |
He is probably very scared and feels very out of sorts. Give him lots of loving and attention. Don't force it, just let it happen naturally. :D |
He doesnt hate you! Poor guy is just scared and taking some time to adjust to his new home. Give him time and he'll be following you everywhere! Congrats on your pup tho!! |
Imagine you as a kid - being taken from the only place you know - having to endure a car/plane ride and ending up in a STRANGE LOCATION with strange people - You may have had sisters and brothers, and you for SURE had a mom - now....they're all gone.....no where to be seen ....that's what he's feeling right now. Give him time and be patient - they have to have time to adjust and hopefully he will soon |
awww I agree with the others, just give him some loving and tender words, he'll come around |
I agree with the others. It's going to take time. Before you know it, he will be your best friend. How old is he? You're a new Mother and new Mother's never get to sleep ;) |

Laughing about the sleeping arrangements...I cave fairly early on too. I betcha he loves you lots more today. :) |
Aww, just give him time. He doesn't hate you, just getting used to his new surroundings. Just give him lots of love and before you know it he'll be giving you lots of yummy yorkie kisses :) I can't wait to see pics and I hope you get some sleep soon! I remember those days  |
He's scared, and you are exhausted! Believe me, after going through the puppy nights very recently I feel your pain. I promise this will pass. I have had my puppy for 3 weeks now and he's doing great now, but he was so subdued and scared on the car ride home and the first two days after we got him I was telling everybody what a calm little guy he was (although crying at night for three solid nights...then it stopped like turning off the faucet!) Boy was I wrong about the "calm little guy"! He is a little firecracker now! He plays all day long. My other two are slowly accepting him into the pack even though he tries to force his way in. Try to stay calm and be patient and you will be rewarded. I promise he won't cry forever! |
oh poor baby is probebley scared to death being away from Mom, Siblings, now he is in strange surroundings with strange people, i would be scared too. lots of patience, lots of loving and talking to him softly and shortly he will become your Shadow :D |
try to spend as much time on the floor with him as possible. Remember you're a giant to him. "You've had a lot of other good advice and maybe with some sleep, you'll see how much your furbaby does love you. ;) |
How is he doing today? Tessa never ended up spending one nite in her crate. I had every intention of crate training her at nite then she started whining a little and she has been in my bed ever since! That was almost 6mths ago! It also took her awhile to adjust ( probably about 2 or 3 days) to her new home. Just give it time! |
I also cover the sleeping crate with a towel on three sides and leave the door open during the day. They seem to like crawling back into the dark secure place when they are insecure. Sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck. |
