Introducing me and Rambeau! Hello all, I have just found this forum. I have been trying to get some advice about my new boy. BACKGROUND!! I have always had dogs, mostly big. Due to square footage restraints many years ago I went for miniature dauchshunds. My first, little Lupie, no bigger than a handful, after her came Bratwurst, much bigger than a handful. Lupie was my heart, soul and joy for sixteen years. One year ago she left me and I still cry, four months later at a ripe age of fourteen Bratty followed. Both had emergency back surgeries when they were young so I decided never to bring that heart break again. I waited a while after their deaths, but you know, with a geriatric dog sometimes them falling asleep forever in a sunbeam is a blessing, and both of mine did just that (thanks kids!) I really wanted a Frenchy but due to financial restraints I decided on a yorkie (mean?? No just another choice) My stepmother had the cutest yorkie when I was a kid, Serendipity. Her legs were too short, her back was too long, her hair was too soft and we loved her to death! So I decided that was what I wanted. Introducing Rambeau! He didn't seem to be that small when I got him but he is only up to a whopping 3 lbs, however he is healthy and happy. He is 9 months old and already went through a major growth spurt. He had a complete set of double teeth. Scary!! he looked like a shark! When I got him fixed, I had fourteen teeth pulled which included two perm. incisors. He has been going through 'ball therapy" since then and his canines are spreading out to fit his little mouth. I love this guy! Unfortunately he is not the lap lover Lupie was and I miss that. He is always into something and would prefer to be on his own instead of on my lap. Is this because he is a boy? Or is it the breed? I couldn't get Lupie out of my lap. I know that yorkies are very independent since they are terriers. We are going for a beach trip in a week and I have bought him much. A life preserver, quilted wrap if he gets chilled, new collapsible kennel and a custom sling to carry my giant in (camouflage) I couldn't find a bathing suit that suited him:mad: I would love to give him a puppy cut before going but I can't find any good directions for doing so. My hubby and I used to trim our springers and I trim animals at work so me and clippers are old friends. I am a little hesitant to dig in though, 95% of his body is hair. Should I just bring him to a groomer? I don't want them sedating him or being harsh, if anyone hurt him . . . Do people who groom yorkies use comb guides? I have a bunch of those at work that I could use on him. I have many grooming questions but I will post them later, I have droned on long enough. Again hello from Melissa and Rambeau! |
There have been quite a few YTers who have posted about their experience at groomers. Not very many have been encouraging. Horrible cuts, scared doggies, you name it, it has been mentioned. Quite a few say that they groom their Yorkies themselves. The first cuts weren't the best but they all say that they have gotten better over time. There is a thread on YT that tells how to groom. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...cerella02.html It's under Yorkie Grooming Talk. Good luck! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! I can't wait to see pictures of Rambeau :) |
Welcome to you and Rambeau. Sorry to hear of the loss of your other babies. I have had Yorkies since 1970 and most of them were lap dogs, I have had both males and females and didn't find much difference in the sexes. They so settle down eventually and he may become more of a lap dog. I have 3 right now and one is a lap dog but only to my daughter and one is not and my 7 month old puppy is a real snuggler. All of mine are females. As far as grooming with 4 dogs now I started grooming them myself and Cali my cottony coat one goes to a groomer every 3-4 months for a good groom, but only to someone I trust. I just comb, brush and trim the best I can annd I fugure it will grow back. Have fun at the beach! |
Hi Melissa, welcome to YT! I can only imagine how cute Rambeau is and can't wait to see pics. Have a great time on your beach trip! |
Neither one of my babies will stay out of my lap. If I go out of the room and Mia is on the bed she cries. Jack runs down the steps to the bed and follows everywhere I go. Mia can climb up but won't go down. Betty |
Hi and welcome to you and your Rambeau. Since he only weighs three pounds, I'd leave his little coat alone. He will need it to keep cool and also to stay warm. I have three Yorkie girls and none are really lap dogs. I don't mind at all. They do like to touch some part of their body against me when were all on the sofa. Hope to meet your little guy soon. |
Welcome and hope to see pics when you can. It sounds like Rambeau is already onhis way to being spoiled. Love the name and spelling BTW. |
My sweety on his beach adventure Quote:
I would show pictures of him but I don't know how. Any advice on that would be appreciated also. Melissa |
pictures I put some pictures of Rambeau in the gallery! That's all I could manage. |
Not sure about others, but Gracie was not a lap dog at all for her first few years....she wouldn't stay in anyone's lap and wanted to be up and playing. Since about the age of 4, though, she's turned into a huge lap dog....she loves to lay in everybody's lap now. Maybe Rambeau will become your lap dog as he gets older. |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Piccolo and I are looking forward to seeing pictures of Rambeau. :2photo: |

hi welcome to YT!! Mine went to the beach in December and a good spray thru the shower before we left and a bath when we got back took care of all the sand, and my 2 have long coats. And we were in Florida with the fine sand. More good grooming information can be found here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...book-free.html |
