| Help, I am bringing a new furbaby home, what do I need?? Ok, I am getting a new full blooded Yorkie from a breeder, I get to bring my little man home in May. My last Yorkie I rescued while I was on vacation in North Carolina from a home where he was being beaten and 6 weeks ago he went missing/stolen. I've never brought a "puppy" home before, what do I need?? I bought a collar (smallest I could find) a xs harness and a leash. thats all I have so far because I dont know what to buy and what brands are best for a puppy. Petland suggested food made by Nutro. But that is also the only brand they sell. I dont know if its the best. And I only want the best for my baby. Any suggestions on any subject of owning a new puppy please let me know. I need to know everything there is to know, from training to food, I've heard of belly bands - do I need one? Please help. I'm still kind of new at all of this. | Congratulations on your new little one. What a cute boy he is! I doubt you will need a belly band now, maybe later on if he has problems with marking in your house. You may want to get some pee pads if you are training him inside. I recommend you use the harness rather than the collar as they have very fragile necks. If you use Nutro I recommend the Natural Choice variety. I use Canidae and my dogs love it!

| bellybands are wonderful for little boys....mine thinks he has to mark everything and i mean everything....so he wears a bellyband 24/7......if you use them get serenity pads.....they absorb more......start from day 1...with the pee pads at the door you intend on taking him outside of.....use the same door everytime till he gets used to it.....dont take him out at all till he has his 4th shot because of parvo.............how old is your little man?.....i used Eukanuba small breed petite race kibble for him to start......moisten it at first if he is not already taking dry kibble....we changed at about 6 months to Nature's Choice Venison and Brown Rice for puppys......and now we use Ol roy dinner rounds cut in half and Ol roy soft and Moist along with the Nature's Choice Dry Kibble mentioned above.....i am still learning myself but if i can i will be happy to answer your questions

| I dont get him until May 10th which is his 9th week. And that is Mother's day weekend too, what a coincidence! The breeder told me how important it was not to take them early and she doesnt allow it, so I just said ok you know best. |

| The silky is doing great, she called last night to tell us how happy she was to have him. She really is a great lady, and I am so glad she was the one to take him in. She said he has been attached to her hip since she got him. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I bought a package of "receiving" blankets from Target and took them to the breeders when I got Joey. The breeder took each one of the blankets and rubbed them over the mom. So Joey had some good "smells" to keep him company at night. Be sure and read the "sticky" frequently asked questions, it has a list of medical supplies that might be needed. Also, be sure and get some food from your breeder, if you are going to switch foods, you need to do it very gradually adding new food to old. I don't think you need to worry about bellybands, and they should never be used for house breaking. Boys don't start marking until after 6 months and many never do if the have been neutered. Another important item is chew toys; he will be teething and sometime will try to bite you. It's important to say no and substitute a suitable chew toy. I liked some of the regular baby teething rings, but beware of anything that says made in China, they don't have a good record for testing their products yet. Good luck and ask your breeder lots of questions, if she is a good breeder she will welcome the questions.

| I know a lot of little men dont start marking till 6 months but Smokey did......i got him at 12 weeks and at 14 weeks he started hicking his leg on everything in sight....lol....you should have seen my kitchen.....2 inches high all around the room...on the dishwasher....on the stove......on the frig......and on 1 wall...which we now call Smokey's wall.....i cleaned everything of course....but you can still see the dark line on the wall.....then he started humping early too....so the bellybands are on him 24/7 inside.....i do take them off of him when we go outside....
