Selling Leo Sad news. I've been so busy with work that i dont have time anymore for Leo.Its tearing me apart to think that i have to find him a new home.He will be 5 months on may 15th.I love him so much.Everyday i come home and open the door i see his sweet face.He is almost potty trained. He sometimes marks his spots but he goes on his pee pad in the guest bathroom. He has been a wonderful puppy so far and has a unique personality. I work from 7-3.30 and my job sometimes requires me to stay late. What do i do???I want to keep him.I wish i could bring him to work.I've been crying every night and holding him.And i think he can sense my sadness.:( I get up at 5am and let him out, feed him, play with him and then put him back in his pen at 6.30 when i have to leave. In his pen he has his crate, water and toys. Please give me some advice |

Oh, honey, I am sorry to hear this. With your work schedule sounds like he is having to stay crated most of the day. Do you have a room that you could close the door to confine him? At least he would have more space. And another option and probably the best is to get another yorkie if there's anyway you can. He will have company and a playmate and it will just make his little fly by. if you aren't able to do either of these, as bad as it hurts, you might need to re-home him but try these things if you can first. I know you don't want to give your baby up. |

What about a dog daycare? |

I'd be broken hearted too if I had to leave my girls in a crate for 10 hours or more. Both of the above suggestions are really good. I hope you can work it out; but if you can't, maybe a new home with tons of attention will make everyone feel better. I'm sorry. :( |

I feel bad for you. I always worked when I had one yorkie and I gave them the run of the breakfast area that they could look out the sliding glass door and watch the goings on behind us (a school backs up to us). They were all fine just very happy to see us when we got home. Now that I no longer work, I have 4 dogs and they really sleep a lot of the day anyway. If you can try putting him in a bigger space and see if that works. If you really think finding him a new home is best he is at a good age to rehome. Good luck I know it must be so hard. |

I leave Baxter in our bathroom (not crated) from 7:00-5:30 and he does fine. He uses his pee pad and is usually able to hold his poo till I get home. Think long and hard about what you are doing. Don't make any rash decisions. I am so sorry you are going through this. Baxter tries my patience and I threaten to give him away on a daily basis but then I see a post like this and know that I couldn't do it. Good luck. |

Reading your replies, tears are rolling down my face.I dont know what to do.The pen is huge.He has plenty of room to play in it.I dont have the money to get another yorkie right now.My husband and i have become so attached to him.We treat him like he is our baby.We spoil him too. I have my 11yr old brother come stay with us for the summer and he wants to see Leo too.I would love to see them two play.so cute. I need to make a decision soon If i do deceide to find him a new home, where do i post a listing and what a the prices for a 5month old yorkie? I live in Washington DC |

I went through this for about 2 months when I first got Carlos. It was so much work I really didn't know what I was getting into. I felt like I was not being a good enough mother to him because I could not spend a lot of time with him. I felt guilty for getting him and thought that I should rehome him and then that made me feel even worse for thinking about rehoming him. Things got better after about 3 months of having him. It just take time to readjust to having someone that relies on you. |

I leave Ozzy in his xpen from 7:45am until 5pm 2 days a week. He does ok. He has food, water, toys, bed and pee pads. The other 3 days I send him to Doggie Daycare. He loves it! Maybe you could send him to Daycare one or 2 days a week to help break up the time alone? Or hire a dog walker, that may be less expensive too. Make a few calls before you upset yourself with deciding to rehome him. There may be another way... |

i work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. M-F, and sometimes have to stay a little later in the summer time... i keep Kash in a rectangular play pen (about 2 feet wide by 4 feet long) with his toys, food/water, crate and pee pad. he always pees on the pad (never in his crate or on the floor), and he holds his poop until i come home and take him outside. of course, he's overly excited when i walk through the door, and i'm not sure what he does during the day while i'm gone, but i'm sure he just sleeps or plays with his toys. i know he eats and pees (lol) because his food bowl is always emptier than when i left it, and the pee pad is yellow, instead of white. i wake up at around 6 a.m. and put him in his pen between 7:15 - 7:30 a.m. i think what you are doing is fine because at least you're not keeping him in tiny crate all day. he has room to walk, pee, etc. this is just my opinion because i know how you feel. i wish i didn't have to leave Kash at home alone all day, but so far he's doing fine. he's healthy and energetic (especially after being in his pen all day)... good luck! let us know what you decide to do. :) (((HUGS))) |

I understand what you are going through. We are going through something similar, except Logan will not use the pee pad but goes on the floor instead and has started barking in the middle of the night. I wish you the best. |

I always leave my (now) two in the kitchen for the whole day when I am out or at work. I leave weeweepads down for them which they use but if they have an accident on the kitchen floor I really don't care. If you think your job is too demanding for for dogs....I am an accountant and during tax season and even 3 months before that I am up at 5am and at least 2 days a week out of the house by 7am and not back till 9ish. But they just love when I get home and it is just like I never left. Don't give up on them if you can swing it. Even if your are around more on the weekends it will really count. Your schedule is not nearly as bad as mine except for the fact that he is still a puppy and does need to be feed more often. But I know how you feel.....I had to at first leave Pucci alone when I went out to work then after 2 years we got him another Yorkie (GiGi). Now I rush home to 2 instead of one. I hope all works out well for you.....is it possible you can have someone come in a lunch time to feed him and play with him for about 1/2hr. I used to do that too. Tina |

Are there any reasons (other than your guilt at leaving Leo all day) that you think he needs to be rehomed? Like destructive behaviour, personality changes, etc? If not, and it's just you feeling guilty, well, I work from home, (working right now even) and SoCo spends his day sleeping. Honestly, I work from 9-5 usually with a 1 hour break, I don't generally let him out during my 3-4 hr shifts and if I happen to go upstairs (when at home) to potty myself, I wake him up. Sometimes he's so out he doesn't wake up till I give him a little pat on the head. That's probably what Leo's doing most of the day too! Right now I'm at our trailer and SoCo spends the day sleeping on the couch. Sometimes our bed. So I'm pretty sure having observed this behaviour for several months now, Leo is probably a bed bug too :) All I'm trying to say is unless your seeing a major reason to rehome him, (which I haven't seen) than I don't think there's any reason to. It's normal to miss him, but really, he's probably too busy snoozing to miss you most of the day ;) Tara :) |

I just wanted to add, dogs really don't have a concept of time. Proof would be me leaving to go outside without SoCo for 2 minutes or going shopping for 2 hours and getting the SAME REACTION (I mean identical). So while YOU know it's been 7-8 hours, Leo really doesn't, I promise :) Tara :) |

I don't think you need to rehome him. I work 8 to 4:30 and sometimes later and mine are fine. I know you feel guilty because he's alone for so long but since he is in a pen with room to play I'm betting he's more then okay and the anxiety is more on your part. Just make the time you are home with him quality time. You are doing fine. Big hugs. |
|
I have to agree with everyone that just because you work full time, that is no reason to rehome him. I worked full time when we first got Tucker, and I used to sit at work and think about him being home alone and it would kill me. (and he wasn't even really alone, we had another dog). Anyway, I retired a yar and a half ago and what everyone is telling you is true: even with me home all day, Tucker still spends most of his time sleeping. As long as you are giving Leo lots of attention when you are home you don't have anything to worry about. And, he doesn't know any differently if you've worked since you got him. |

I know you said you couldn't afford another yorkie, but what about looking at local shelters for a small breed that would be cheaper than a yorkie, and a best pal for Leo? We originally adopted our lab for our golden, then evantually got Ranger- for me! We joke that Nitro (lab) is Lila's (goldie) dog! She stopped chewing things in the house after we got him because they keep each other company. I work at home two or three days per week and can attest to the fact the dogs mostly sleep ALL DAY! Ranger doesn't sleep as much as the others, but he's only nine months. When he's not sleeping, he lays down and chews a bone for hours. Good luck and don't make any quick decisions. |

How about a small cat or kitten? my chihuahua and my cat play all day half the time they don't seem to notice we're here unless they want to be loved on. tyty |

No way...don't do it. Explore all options before you get rid of your baby. I know I'm in a little different position than most, but I take my baby with me to work most of the time. But, when I leave him at home, I have the kitchen blocked off so that if he does have an accident it's not on carpet. Please don't get rid of your baby. He'll gladly wait for you to get home. Those are not long working hours. He does not care how long you are gone. He'll be happy that you are back. Don't do it. You will regret it. That's my two cents worth. |

Finding a rescue doggie to accompany him during the day is a good idea. I really don't think you need to rehome him, you sound so torn up over this. I feel like if you do it, you will regret it later. |

Hello - I am sorry you are going through this :( My boyfriend and I are gone from about 8am-6pm every weekday. We have a dog walker who comes 3 days a week and then we each take a turn and go home one day a week. It is hard and gets costly but it is so worth it to me and for Lula and for my own peace of mind! We keep Lula in a play pen with her bed, tons of toys, food and water always and we leave the TV sound on for her throughout the day. We also give her the Kong right before we leave each time. She is just over 6 months old now and I am hoping to give her free reign of the living kitchen area in 2-3 months once she is fully trained and maybe when the biting calms a bit! It is hard at 1st without a doubt but it is doable!! Good luck! |

And everyone does always tell me that dogs have no concept of time so maybe that will help you rest a little easier? I know it doesn't really help me either :( |

I agree with everyone, keep the baby! Of course I have more than 1 to keep them company, but, they also watch cartoon network every day!:D Makes them think someone is there, they just don't know where they are! |

I have found a great doggy day care that I leave my baby at during the day so that he is not left alone during the day in a x-pen since most of my house is carperted and the only places he would be able to run around in is the bathrooms or basement and felt that would be tough on him. It costs me $15 a day for 5 days and works out well since by the time he comes home walks, then eats he is so tired he falls asleep thru the rest of the night so he gets all his exercise and company while there. |

Have you looked in to doggie day care or a dog walker for Leo at least for a few days a week for some company? |
