Hawk help needed please! Does anyone know the best way to keep Hawks away? I have a large field behind my house that is overrun with rabbits which has attracted a pair of Hawks! One of them almost got Lily yesterday!!!! I scooped her up and ran inside. Not 10 minutes later I was standing at the window watching a rabbit on my patio when a Hawk came out of nowhere and got it!!! That rabbit was bigger than my Lily and now I'm afraid to let her outside. I need some help on what works and what doesn't when it comes to keeping them away :( |
Well, I have dealt with the same issue and there is no way of keeping hawks away. I have called DNR and asked multiple times and finally talked to a man who said this. He doubts very highly a hawk would pick up Bella or Diggy with It being spring many many babies around for them to eat. Mine also have benn dive bombed but that is a scare tactic used as they think dogs are also hunting. Not sure if I thrust this but its the best I have as hawks are a protected speicies and you cannot hurt them. He also suggested a few scare crows in the yard posing as people. Good Luck. Oh and he did tell me this....If you see and EAGLE run! they are VERY capable and are known for preying on small dogs and cats. We have a few Eagle nests on the river by my house and we have actually has an Eahle in the back yard swooping thru. He didnt appear to be hunting more just checking things out and flying thru but they are HUGE and POWERFUL! Hope that helps. It may also help if you know they type of Hawk it is many hunt in different ways. Where do u live? What did the hawk look like? If its a Copper or Harris Hawk they are WAY more aggressive than say a Red Shoulder. |
I'm not sure what kind of Hawk it was. I will look it up and let you know. I do know that a Hawk will carry away a small dog! I know someone who has seen a Hawk carry away their Yorkie and we also have a least one member on here who lost her Yorkie to a Hawk. A few years ago, I was walking Tucker (my teapot yorkie at 9 lbs) and a Hawk tried to get him. It cut his back up very badly. And the rabbit that it got was bigger than Lily who is only 2 lbs on a good day :( Thank for the advice on the Eagles and different types of Hawks! |

This is why I keep Baxter on a leash all the time. We have hawks and owls in our yard. I worry about the owls too because they have been seen with rabbits. |
please be careful and never let your baby out of your sight.. those hawks can pickup your baby in a 1/2 a second... i would be terrified.. |
Yeah im fearing the hawks around my area!! Whenever we take Phoenix out less than 5 mins goes by and the hawks come out making their calling sounds then theres 3 or 4 circling our house. Thats when i just pick him up and take him in the house. I come back w/o him and they leave!! |
I live in FL and I have the same prob w/ the devil birds as I call them. Ive had 3 near misses and one big red tailed hawk even sat up on my tree in the front yard, dismembering a dove and threw all the feathers right at me! I moved and he would move to throw more at me! I was like ok thats it! Now its war! But they are still winning Im afraid! They are beautiful creatures and they are supposed to be here BUT they won't eat my babies! Im out with them all the time. I put a thread on here a few months back and got alot of good support and info. I know there are many of us with the same prob who can give you good advice! Good Luck!! be Safe! |
Great thread and it's that time of year when they all come out.:( We have the same problem with hawks since we live near the Metroparks and valley. Funny Izzy can hear them sometimes in the distance and she does get nervous and wants to come in the house. I also bring her in when I hear them circling the area. :( Thanks for the warning about the eagles - never knew that but knew about the owls..need to watch out for them, too. |
Yikes. I think the only way to be safe is to walk them on leashes. That's what I do because hawks are around here also. It's not as convenient, but I would never forgive myself if something happened to them. |
Well thats why I asked where you live but now I see your in TN. My dad lives in Calvert City KY and is an Avid bird of prey fan. He is one of those that can see one soaring miles up it appears ad tell ya what it is. Okay this is gonna sound dumb but an easy way to narrow what hawk you have or at least a group is look at its legs...if its feathered down the leg or not that can narrow it down. Cooper Hawks are a smaller hawk but they are one spieces that hunt for "fun of the kill" not because they are hungry. they have a cream colored belly and are not all that big compared to a red shoulder. Red Shoulders and Red Tails are VERY common but are lazy (which is good news) they prefer roadkill then to hunt It would be great if you can narrow it down that wy you can read up on the net and find out hunting patterns and how much risk there really is. You have me curious now ill help ya figure out what ya have if you describe him :) Let me know! I LOVE birds! Oh just encase, if you have feeders Hawks LOVE to prey on feeders as they attract Mourning Doves (not too smart of a bird and easy kill) and sparrows :) |
In our backyard my husband and I saw a red tailed hawk...swoop down and pick up a full size mallard duck. I would fully expect they could pick up a yorkie if they were so inclined. |
We have them around here too, and I don't know of any way to keep them away.....maybe firing a shotgun into the air? Fireworks? lol I wish I knew because sometimes when we are outside, I see them circling around. I always have the boys on leashes, and I take them inside right away when I see them. I think as long as there is wildlife around, the hawks will be there. It seems to get better here once spring is over. |
