Pee pads and dirty floors How many of you have yorkies who are JUST pee pad trained? Layla has only used pee pads her whole life. My yard isn't completely fenced so I need to put her harness and leash on everytime she goes outside, and I work on the other side of the city full time and I don't expect her to hold it all day! So the pee pad thing has worked for us. She has one pad upstairs in the corner of the living room, and another downstairs. The problem we have with it is that her little paws get in the pee spots and then mark little pee pawprints all over the laminate floors. I don't know if there's any way to avoid this. I change her pad daily, but she seems to just walk right through it after she pees. I didn't have a huge problem with it because I was the floors every weekend, but last night my roommate seemed to get really angry about it and said it's so disgusting it makes her sick :( So I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone else have this problem or can anyone think of a solution? |
I tried the pee pads and Jake did OK with them. He eventually got to where he wouldn't use them and would hold it til I got home. Now I don't even use them. I take him out first thing in the morning, I try and get home around lunch time(only work 10 minutes from the apartment), take him out as soon as I get home and then take him out before we go to bed. Sorry I can't be of any more help. Maybe find a new roommate? If you are cleaning up the mess when you get home then IMO your roommate needs to be quiet. |
Wrigley uses pee pads that we keep inside of a litter box. We don't have that problem, maybe your pads aren't absorbent enough? I'm not sure what else to suggest. |
This is a tough one. I wish I could give you better advice, but both my boys go outside. The only thing that i can think of is to keep her in a smaller area like a bathroom, or maybe to put several pads down. Good luck. |
I just did a search on google and found this Replace Your Dog Litter Box with an Indoor Dog Potty | UGO PetCare I'm just not sure if the grate would be hard on her paws... |
I have carpet so I don't see it as easily but I do need to clean more often. At night I put her in a warm water wash with baby shampoo to just wash her feet......they stink and it bothers her alot too. There are pee pads out there that are supposed to absorb more but they are very expensive. I couldn't live without her being pee pad trained especially with our cold winter mornings. Now she doesn't use them much unless I am gone for awhile. |
Are you using disposable pee pads or washable? I found when I switched to washable that they are MUCH more absorbent and kept their paws a lot cleaner. Maybe try that. I purchased mine from Little Bit on here and I love them! They've already been washed a million times and are still like new. Give it a shot! |

I am using disposable. How often do you wash them? With two other roommates who work the same hours as me, it's tough to get in a load of laundry because each person takes about 2 nights a week from after work until bedtime :( |
This is unusual as most yorkies will try to avoid there own pee when walking on the pad. You can change the pee pad more often, but I know it get expensive. It is easy to trained the yorkshire to go out by putting a pee pad on the ground with a rock on it. Stick with the same spot, eventually you won't need the pee pad he will know this is his spot to go. Or you can buy a cheap carpet( a WASHABLE one like for the bathroom) of 3X3 feet or even use 2 towels to put under the pee pad. That will help dry out his feet as he walk off the pee-pad. Hope that will help you. |
She does pee outside when we go for walks, and she's very smart so I'm sure it would be easy to train her, but sometimes I'm not home for 10 hours if traffic is really bad and I really don't think she'd be able to hold it that long. I just looked up reviews for the UGODog potty thing and I couldn't find anything negative about it. I guess the cubes in the grate are very small to make it comfortable on the dog's feet. I think I might give it a try. |
Mine only use the pee pads as well. I put one of those washable pee pads under the disposable ones so that they have some where to "wipe" there feet before they get to the floor. I'm a nut about washing my floors though. |
I have the same problem with Leo. He steps in his pee every time. I would also suggest a same bath rug under the pad. |
I put a flannel backed tablecloth under the pee pad but that doesn't help to wipe her feet alittle. I am going to put a throw rug under too. I can't use the washable since I share a washing machine and they would feel funny about it or even the smell when washing them so this works well for me and thanks for the advise about throw rug. |
The washable pee pads will solve a lot of the problem. They are MUCH more absorbent than the paper ones. They really aren't that expensive in the long run. They end up saving you money. If you can't wash them every day just get enough to last until however often you regularly wash. If you fold them in fourths with the dirty side in the smell is contained. I just stack mine that way next to the washer until I am ready to wash. |

Pepper is both pee-pad and outside trained. Husband and I work full time and we never tried to make Pepper hold for the 8 hours we're not home. He goes whenever he wants but he usually sleeps during day anyway... I use disposable pads, the landlord won't let us put a washer in the apartment and I can't keep a load of dirty pads around till the weekend when we go do the laundry. In Kmart, the pads are around $ 14 (pack of 50) - I usually put one clean one in the AM and switch again after coming home from work in the evening, so it's not that bad. The pad is in the kitchen and you can easily see the prints around the pad (light tiles, too). I mop the floor once or twice a week, but also wipe around the whole pad area daily with windex... |
I have a dark wood floor that shows everything too. With 4 nine week old puppies, I put a cloth shower curtain liner down and the pee pads on top of that. It keeps the little feet off my floor. I take it up everyday and mop with Nature's Miracle. It only takes a minute and the floors are clean again. Hope this helps. |
Since we have so many (8) dogs with us when we are traveling in our RV, I have taught then to use the shower. I just put the pads inside the shower and a carpet on the outside. They hop right in, do their business and when they hop out they land on the carpet. By the time they get outside the bathroom their feet are dry. Maybe, if you put your pads in a corner of a small room and a carpet in front of it, by the time they got to the main part of the house, their feet would be dry. Just a thought. |

I think I might try either the UGoDog thing OR just take the pad out of the living room all together and just use the one downstairs where there actually is carpet. But since she rarely uses the one downstairs anyway, I'm worried that she'll just keep peeing in the living room in the spot where her pad was. |
My 3 Yorkie girls here,, all use puppy pads,, Cricket was litter box trained,, but then when we added Daisy,, Daisy was too large for the litter box (she'd poop over or on the side) so we went to puppy pads just in the floor,, which was fine,, but the with Daisy turning out to be 9 1/2 lbs,, well,, as you can imagine,, it took a LOT of pads!! and then we added a third Yorkie back in December,, and found out about the Washable Potty Pads,, and bought from LittleBit here on YT,, first i ordered 4,, then 4 more,, and just this morning placed a third order for 4 more,,lol,, i use them out on the road (we dont have to stop for potty breaks,, as they dont know to GO outside anyway),, and have plenty for here and back home. I highly recommend them, ,much more absorbent,, look better lying around, and its a GREEN idea as well!! and certainly saves you money in the long run,, with no leaks or tracks for us,, with 3 Yorkies using the one pad.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
We also recommed the potty pads by LittleBit. I have two yorkies and the washable potty pads work so much better for us than the disposable ones. I change them out about every 2 days. I think you should try the washables first. Good luck! |
Okay thanks :) Maybe I'll try the washables. How are they for odor? |

Let us know how it goes....bet it will solve the problem. Just make sure to buy enough and do a bunch at a time in the laundry. I wash mine with a little bleach just to make sure but others do not. |
I just thought of something that I do with our cat. I am a clean freak and always try of avoid messes. It drove me crazy that our cat would have cat litter scattered every where. I decided to take a small plastic kids pool and put her litter box in there with bath mats around it, and it works great. By the time she hops out all of the litter is left in the pool. I don't know how this would work for a pup. Just an idea. |
I really like the idea of the washable cloth pad under the disposable ones. Disposable for those that can't wash as often or don't like the idea & washable cloth pad for helping keep their little paws clean!!;) I'm going to give this a try. |
