Handlers or do it yourself? What are the drawbacks of showing your dog/s yourself? What are the benefits of showing your dog/s yourself? The same for handlers, what are the drawbacks of them showing your dog/s? What are the benefits of them showing your dog/s?

showing It is fun to show them yourself...if you enjoy it...I do not. I do enjoy showing a puppy, (until about a year) but when it is an adult, I perfer a handler...but that is just me. I love the show part..being there, watching and enjoying it. I do not enjoying the process before..getting there, setting up, grooming to perfection, keeping them groomed until ring time, waiting and then waiting somemore... I enjoy talking to people and having fun...then, let the handler do the hard part. It is wonderful to finish your own dog, but in the end a champion title is just as good no matter who was on the end of the lead...try it and see what YOU perfer.

There is simply nothing more fun than handling your own puppy. Taking them to puppy classes each week and watching them become confident in the role of "show dog" is simply better than chocolate... Yikes!!! However, I have to agree with Pat that when they become adults, they really need a pro. Getting an adult Yorkie in full show coat ready for the ring is not a job for the faint of heart. CJ

Handlers or do it yourself By the time you add up all the costs to take a adult to a show- it may be less expensive for the handler to show your dog. I have always felt that the puppy class is the chance for you as an owner to see if that kid has what it takes to be shown as an adult. You can watch him mature over the next few months and see how he compares to the others beng shown in the ring. I have seen a lovely 8 month old puppy not mature into a quality adult. It is nice to sit back and watch your kid being show- you can observe a lot of things that you can not see when you are on the other end of the lead. You can see how your kids is moving- what does his topline look like when he is relaxed- how is he holding his ears- what is his expression. It does give you a lot of satisfaction to show your own kid- but some like myself have to face the fact that we can not physically do it.
