Eating Twigs?!? My little guy Brady is addicted to crunching and eating small sticks and twigs. Whenever I am outside with him I am constantly taking them away and throwing them over the fence. Due to some high winds we have a TON of them in our backyard right now. Some are so small I just cant get them with the rake. Is it ok for him to swallow some if I don't catch him in time?!? Admin, sorry if this is in the wrong place, he is not sick or injured. Thanks ahead of time for your help.:) |
man do I know what you mean!!! but Gracie almost ALWAYS goes for the sticks that are at least 2 times her size! lol its really funny to see her running with them in her mouth! |
Its driving me nuts! I start watering my plants and I hear this CHOMP CHOMP behind me and when I turn and tell him drop it he takes off! So I chase him all the while he's chowing down on a stick and if I cant catch him in time he swallows it and walks up to me like, aren't you proud of me mommy! I ate that bad stick, see all gone!:p Brat! |
yep thats Gracie to a tee!!! and they KNOW when they arnt suppose to eat something!!! lol they are BIG BRATS!!!!:p |
My Phyllis loves to eat those helicopter things that fall from the trees. When they dry out it sounds like she is crunching chips. haha When I try to get them from her she runs and chews faster. |

My Gracie chews on every little twig and stick. She even tries to smuggle them back in the house! She is such a goofy little girl, and luckily I can tell when she is chewing on something that isn't one of her toys. So I have to go and search for what she brought in this time...... |
I am so happy I am not alone! My pup Bindi does the same thing. It's quite annoying taking her for a walk because she always stops to pick up twigs and tries to eat them and then of course get the hell away from me when she sees me coming. I try to keep her bark intake to the bare minimum though. I surely hope she outgrows this. |

I haven't had a problem with Maggy May doing this so far (the few times she's been out since the weather started to warm up.) Funny though cause she finds EVERYTHING in the house she can get off the floor so I was sure once her lil paw paws hit the outside world she'd be eating everything in sight, lol. You could always call and ask your vet what he thinks if this & if it will hurt your lil one or not. |

Hey just a thought if your dogs who chew sticks are puppies they might be teething. Get them some rawhide. And as to keep-away games try running away and pretending to be really interested in something like a dog toy (lots of high pitched noises squeeking the toy) I'll bet you anything you like the dog will think he's missing out on something much better than a dumb old stick! At least it works with Dougal! He likes chewing sticks at the park so I squeak his squeaky tennis ball and run away cackling that "it's mine, all mine!" |

The mental picture I got from your last statement made my day! LOL LOL |
Carlos is the same way he loves eating twigs and mulch. I have to give him treats just to get him to drop it because he is so fast. The other day he came flying in the house with something and my hubby and I thought it was a stick. Hubby grabbed it out of his mouth quick and then started screaming. It was an old bird leg. Yuck Yuck Yuck! |

Good to know you are having less of a problem! |

I have been so frustrated I thought of spraying him down with the hose! JK!! I think he tries to eat them because his big sister wants to take them away! |

We have a very bad stray problem here in the south and we had a mother cat and her kittens pooping in our backyard for a while when it was all dirt. We had some run down sessions with cat turds in the dogs mouth. It was great fun let me tell you! |
Yep..Pixie is a Twig eater too..as soon as i let her in the garden she is chomping away on something! as soon as i take a step towards her she darts off chewing as fast as she can before i can get hold of her! |
Yep! Elvis likes the little twigs too! He really loves it when the wind blows a dried leaf around and he chases after it...so cute to watch. :animal-pa |
I actully know someone who is an herbologist that told me that the bark from the twigs is good and nutritional. One method I use to stop my little one from picking up and eating things he is not supposed to touch is to say "leave it" and then when he does, reward with a piece of carrot or favorite treat. After awhile the term "leave it" does sink in and most of the time Remi listens! (At least when he wants to listen). |
Our babies eat sticks, twigs and pieces of bark like they are starving to death. It scares me. I'm always afraid a piece of a stick might perforate something. They are relentless, I can't stop them. They smuggle bark chips in and hide them under the couch for snacking on later. They found a pencil a few days ago and took it under the couch and ate it! By the time I figured out what they were doing, all that was left was the eraser! I hope it doesn't harm them. |
They may out grow this. Both my girls did. I think it's a puppy game and a teething thing. Just taking a guess.:aimeeyork |
Yes! All my 3 do it. We went to my brother's house the other day and we were out on the porch and there were leaves and twigs everywhere. The 3 midgets were eating as many as they could like it was candy to them:rolleyes: It doesn't seem to do them any danger but when Teddy pooped i can see leaves sticking out in it lol and he also vomited today and it was a big ball of leaves so i guess he ate too many. |
