Story about the lady we met at Pet Supermarket today... Esme and I went to Pet Supermarket and we saw a lady with an ADORABLE yorkie puppy. The lady was all about how her dog was a 'teacup.' She had a 'my dog is better than yours because it's a teacup attitude' to her. I tried to gently explain that yorkies are just toys and although she may have been told her baby was going to be tiny, there was a possibility it wasn't. I also told her Esme was 1.8lbs when I brought her home at 12 weeks and now she is almost 7lbs (if not more). The lady said, "Stop scaring me. I know what I am talking about, she is a teacup and she better not get big." I just don't understand the 'teacup' craze... She acted like she would be HORRIFIED if her yorkie grew to be Esme's size! |
That is what happens when people dont research before getting a certain breed and all they listen to is the media hype. |
some people just buy animals because its the current FAD it just makes me sick |
Oh wow, that makes me mad/sad too! For the record, I think Esme is beautiful and perfect at 7lbs! She's a happy, healthy spoiled girl who is obviously loved to pieces - how could anyone be anything but THRILLED that their dog could possibly grow up to look just like her?!!!! :D And what's up with that "I'm better than you because I have a teacup" attitude? What makes their lack of research and education about so-called "teacups" better than anyone else? I do realize that it is possible to do research and buy from the right person and actually get a very healthy tiny dog - if that's what you want. And that's great, those are not the people I'm talking about, LOL! I'm talking about the people who follow the "Fad" (like lycansmom said) and don't realize that they're buying a dog that will come with lots and lots of vet bills and possibly heartbreak! And at that, most don't do their research at ALL and shop at petstores, grrrr. :thumbdown |
These kinds of people are like brick walls. It doesn't matter what you say to them, they don't hear it! (And she probably has to justify to herself why she paid an arm and leg for the pup too) |
I agree - ALL yorkies are beautiful no matter what size - hopefully she has a healthy small yorkie but after hearing that - I bet you hope her little teacup ends up 10 pounds plus by the time it's finished growing - that would be SURE to shut her up ! |

That irritates me alot! However you gently tell them they were told wrong by the breeder, they insist they paid that much to get a teacup. Well, I don't know if they're just ignorant about yorkies or just want people to know they can afford an expensive dog. pfffft! And I agree with Vilette. All dogs are beautiful no matter how big they are. People should see past the teacup "fad". I just wonder what she'll do if her yorkie does end up to be big. poor baby! :( |
I am so sorry you had that unpleasant experience. :( Unfortunately there will always be ignorant people in the world and we can only hope to reach a few. Did you give her a YT card and ask her to join us? :) Maybe she would learn to appreciate ALL yorkies because the ones on here are all beautiful and they all look different. |

My thoughts exactly!! I have run across people like that also...I just smileeeeee and have Sammi wave her paw as we walk away, because once I get started re: "Teacup" i do not stop... PS - We think Esme is a lil cutie patuti!! Sammi says "7 pwounds is nuffin, try 13...Pweople twink I is a the St. Bernward of the Workies!!" XoXoXo Fran and Sammi |
One time I came across a women with a small yorkie. It was maybe two pounds. She said she had a teacup and she could see i had the oversized yorkies. My yorkies are 6 lbs and one is a little over 3lbs. Some people who have those small yorkies are just rude. |
Her dog might get much bigger than the tiny size she hoped for. Tina was supposed to be 3 months old when I got her. She was very tiny and weighed less then 1lb at the vet. The vet told me she was only about 6 wks old. Apparently I was lied to by the seller. Tina is now more than 7lbs at 19 months. She is a lovely baby and I love her dearly. Cathy |
I am so sorry to hear about your experience. It is true that some people that have very small yorkies think theirs is better than a bigger yorkie. On top of it, they are so hardheaded! |
It's pretty funny - I have one of EACH - not a tiny - but Cheri is about 5 pounds... to me - there is no size difference in them - they play and are full of personality and I wouldn't trade that anything. I think lots of us really DID want a small yorkie - but one we fall in love - there's no going back ....When we get those 'questioning' looks from other yorkie owners ....it makes us a bit defensive because our yorkies ARE every bit as good as theirs ...hands down. I had one lady ask me what breed Chanel was once - (she had a yorkie) I was like "SAY WHAT?" Chanel may be 10 lbs. but she is very compact and has a perfect little yorkie body - and very long hair - and she's going to ask me what kind of dog she is ? |

i agree with everything that was already said. people like that sure need to do a lot of research, and she shouldn't have been braging so much! I HOPE SHE ENDS UP WITH A 16 POUNDER!!!!! BTW-did you tell her about YT? |
I really don't get it either! People really do irritate me too when they ask me if Luig is a teacup? I swear, every time we go to petsmart- or anywhere for that fact-they can't believe he's not a teacup! I tell them he is a standard- which is between 4-7 lbs. And I tell them he is 5 1/2 lbs!!! I actually had some one say to me once that- he is too big for a toy breed!  I could not believe what I heard them say. I was in a bad mood that day and I just rolled my eyes and said- gee- thanks, and went on my way. I wasn't in the mood to explain about standard size and that there is no such thing as a teacup!!! Because every time someone approaches me, I feel like I have to explain just that! Sorry for rambling but I am sure you ALL know what I mean!! |

Ok, So what is a TEACUP anyway?? Is'nt that like a coffee cup?? LOL ;) These people are all sick and stubborn.. The only thing I feel bad for is their poor dog, If these people really only want a TEACUP, then what happens to the dog when it reaches the ungodly weight of 7LBs or more  |
I get mad when people act that way too, My Shelbie was 11 pounds and I loved every beautiful ounce of her! Mia is tiny, but I know she could just as easilly grow to be a whole lot bigger too. I did want to try and get one a little smaller this time so I could take her with me more places, but to tell you the truth, I don't honestly care what size she will be. Someone just today asked me if she was a teacup and I explained no, there is no such thing. I love all fur babies no matter the size. :) |
Teacup Fad, grr I get so mad with people that have that attituted that their so called Teacup Yorkie is better th at a reg yorkie. Im just worried if that poor baby turns to be bigger than she wanted that she will abandoned the dog. I hate this Teacup fad. If they know that this poor babies most of the time tend to be very sick for being so tiny I guess they will stop. Gucci is 4 to 5lbs and I love her, even if she was bigger. I have kids so I always wanted a standard Yorkie, not smaller than 4 lbs, im so glad that i got her. |
Speaking of Sickening Quote:
Speaking of sickening...I spoke with a breeder here in Chicago...and she said that a woman approached her for a new Yorkshire Terrier Puppy. She said she had just redecorated the whole house...and her 9 year old apricot poodle didn't go with the "decor" anymore! She wanted to dump the poodle and buy a yorkie. This breeder ( who does yorkie rescue) was incensed and told her no reputable breeder would even consider selling her a pup. She promptly e-mailed all the breeders in the area she could think of to warn them about this woman. Its disgusting....she wanted to treat a living breathing animal, who had been part of her family for 9 years like he was last nights garbage. May she rot in hell...... Francie  |

LOL at "16 pounder".....hahahah |
I have had people come up to me and ask if Linus is a "standard, miniature, or teacup". I just want to kill them. I also love the people who ask me if he's going to get any bigger directly after me telling them he's 5 months old. He's a puppy for the love of God, of course he's going to get bigger. Then there are the people who ask me if I like having such a tiny dog, and I tell them I wish he'd grow more. He's got such a great potential for health problems, and he's so fragile! Of course I love him no matter what, but it ticks me off when people don't understand what goes along with owning a teenie one like him! |
Some people are just ignornat and heartless! Now imagine that same lady deciding she no longer loved one of her children becasue he/she grew too tall or gained too much weight...that is just ridiculous and so is she for being so snobby. |
