Story about the lady we met at Pet Supermarket today... Esme and I went to Pet Supermarket and we saw a lady with an ADORABLE yorkie puppy. The lady was all about how her dog was a 'teacup.' She had a 'my dog is better than yours because it's a teacup attitude' to her. I tried to gently explain that yorkies are just toys and although she may have been told her baby was going to be tiny, there was a possibility it wasn't. I also told her Esme was 1.8lbs when I brought her home at 12 weeks and now she is almost 7lbs (if not more). The lady said, "Stop scaring me. I know what I am talking about, she is a teacup and she better not get big." I just don't understand the 'teacup' craze... She acted like she would be HORRIFIED if her yorkie grew to be Esme's size! |
That is what happens when people dont research before getting a certain breed and all they listen to is the media hype. |

Oh wow, that makes me mad/sad too! For the record, I think Esme is beautiful and perfect at 7lbs! She's a happy, healthy spoiled girl who is obviously loved to pieces - how could anyone be anything but THRILLED that their dog could possibly grow up to look just like her?!!!! :D And what's up with that "I'm better than you because I have a teacup" attitude? What makes their lack of research and education about so-called "teacups" better than anyone else? I do realize that it is possible to do research and buy from the right person and actually get a very healthy tiny dog - if that's what you want. And that's great, those are not the people I'm talking about, LOL! I'm talking about the people who follow the "Fad" (like lycansmom said) and don't realize that they're buying a dog that will come with lots and lots of vet bills and possibly heartbreak! And at that, most don't do their research at ALL and shop at petstores, grrrr. :thumbdown |
These kinds of people are like brick walls. It doesn't matter what you say to them, they don't hear it! (And she probably has to justify to herself why she paid an arm and leg for the pup too) |
I agree - ALL yorkies are beautiful no matter what size - hopefully she has a healthy small yorkie but after hearing that - I bet you hope her little teacup ends up 10 pounds plus by the time it's finished growing - that would be SURE to shut her up ! |

That irritates me alot! However you gently tell them they were told wrong by the breeder, they insist they paid that much to get a teacup. Well, I don't know if they're just ignorant about yorkies or just want people to know they can afford an expensive dog. pfffft! And I agree with Vilette. All dogs are beautiful no matter how big they are. People should see past the teacup "fad". I just wonder what she'll do if her yorkie does end up to be big. poor baby! :( |
I am so sorry you had that unpleasant experience. :( Unfortunately there will always be ignorant people in the world and we can only hope to reach a few. Did you give her a YT card and ask her to join us? :) Maybe she would learn to appreciate ALL yorkies because the ones on here are all beautiful and they all look different. :rolleyes: |

One time I came across a women with a small yorkie. It was maybe two pounds. She said she had a teacup and she could see i had the oversized yorkies. My yorkies are 6 lbs and one is a little over 3lbs. Some people who have those small yorkies are just rude. |
Her dog might get much bigger than the tiny size she hoped for. Tina was supposed to be 3 months old when I got her. She was very tiny and weighed less then 1lb at the vet. The vet told me she was only about 6 wks old. Apparently I was lied to by the seller. Tina is now more than 7lbs at 19 months. She is a lovely baby and I love her dearly. Cathy |
I am so sorry to hear about your experience. It is true that some people that have very small yorkies think theirs is better than a bigger yorkie. On top of it, they are so hardheaded! |
It's pretty funny - I have one of EACH - not a tiny - but Cheri is about 5 pounds... to me - there is no size difference in them - they play and are full of personality and I wouldn't trade that anything. I think lots of us really DID want a small yorkie - but one we fall in love - there's no going back ....When we get those 'questioning' looks from other yorkie owners ....it makes us a bit defensive because our yorkies ARE every bit as good as theirs ...hands down. I had one lady ask me what breed Chanel was once - (she had a yorkie) I was like "SAY WHAT?" Chanel may be 10 lbs. but she is very compact and has a perfect little yorkie body - and very long hair - and she's going to ask me what kind of dog she is ? |
