Silky or cottony? 1 Attachment(s) I don't understand this whole concept of silky or cottony coat? Can anybody tell me what Pebbles coat is? |
1 Attachment(s) YES WHAT ABOUT MISTY. I DONT GET IT EITHER  |
If Yorkie's are like Maltese it may be a little hard to tell when they have their puppy coat. When the adult coat comes in it could be entirely different from the puppy coat. Silky means the hair lays smooth and silky hangs pretty, soft to the touch. Cottony coats seem to be more unmanageable, tangle more easily, doesn't feel smooth, and the doggie always looks like he/she is having a bad hair day. Raw silk actually feels like a cotton ball so I can see where it is hard to distinguish. |
And at what age do they have their 'adult coat?' |
Hey, Sweetpea!!! LOL You've got my shower curtain on your bed!!! LOL Sylvia |
I think Gucci has a cottony coat. I also dont understand very well the difference. I think you can use good quality shampoos and conditioners to make the cottony coats more manageable. Pebbles and Misty are very beautiful. |
I don't know how to tell from pictures, I'm always impressed by the ones that can tell from a picture. I know that Tinkerbell is silky because she doesn't mat at all and she's not fluffy. |
Coats can vary a lot. Good silk actually feels cool to the touch and will slide across your hand like water. Cotton is a soft coat that mats more easily, especially around the top of the legs. You can make it more managable with good shampoo/conditioner, but it is what it is. |

SILK lays flat - Cheri has silky hair and it seems to be thinner and moves more when she walks than Chanels does. |
A puppy that has a thick heavy coat with fluffy feet is likely to be a cotton coated pup. A puppy that has thin hair will likely have a thick silky coat as an adult. This is the way I was told you can tell. I am sure there are lots of ways breeders can tell what type adult coat they will have. It is very detailed in a book I have by way of color too and it is really interesting. |
coats Take them into a dark room..no light..shine a flashlight in their eyes and tell us what colors reflect from the eyes? Then we can talk! |

TALK about Devil Dog - this is Chanel at ONE year old - right before her first haircut - YIKES !!! |
What's up about their eyes? I've never done that to Sadie but maybe I should try. Is it something to do with some of the dogs eyes looking green? |
lol... Buddys eyes do that villette, makes him look evil in the dark!! my kids dont like him out in the garden at night cos the garden lights show his 'evil' eyes! lol |
Pat- HELP.When Rio was a baby his eyes shone green. now they shine goldy colored. I think his coat is cotton. He also had a thick coat as a baby. Mignon,I have no doubts about but what is up with Rio???? Oh and I also heard that a cotton coat grows much faster than a silk coat, true or not? |
Chanels are gold in pictures now Dawn...That red glow only happened in pictures when she was a baby - I haven't seen any Devil Dog eyes in 2 years - weird huh ? |
coats I can't see true eye color until about 6 months or so. Silk is cooler to the touch..and soft grows faster. BUT...there are degrees of soft and silk...some soft is like wool, other soft coats tangle and mat,but not as bad. There is no easy answer from a photo..LoL |

Keep 'em short. I'm not sure what Rika's coat is either, but I keep her cut very short so it's m anagable either way. She's definatley not a silky but she's not a pure cotton either. Would she have her adult coat by now? She's still in the midst of changing colors and she's 16 months old. :animal36 |

Whats the name of that book ? Francie :animal36 |
The New Complete Yorkshire Terrier by Joan Gordon:) |
I have one dog with a cotton coat and one with a silk coat. The cotton coat matts easily and if it is unbrushed has a curly appearance. The silk coat is smooth and I rarely have to brush it. It does not matt. |

So at what age do they have their 'adult coat?' A year? 6 months? |
:) You all are CRAZY!!! So....when "humans" take pictures and they get those "red" eyes are they devils too??!!! Cotton or Silk....either way, all of the dogs that I've seen on this website are so B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! |
I think I read their adult coat comes in at two years but both of my dogs coats have already changed. |
Yes..we are Quote:
Why....yes we are crazy...something wrong with that (as I casually choose bows from a pet catalog....despite the fact I have no Yorkie yet) ? Francie :p |
This is why I am so confused, Pebbles hair does not mat at all, I can go three or four days without brushing, but yet she has red eyes. |
Bruce's eyes always reflect green but I am convinced that he has a cotton coat because he gets tangled pretty easily...Could this be because he is young? When will I know his coat will stay how it is? |
Mignon is almost 8 mths and I complained about tangling to the breeder during a phone chat the other day.She said that the puppy hair is just fighting with the adult coat coming in.She definitly has a silk coat. I just keep up with it more now. Rio has a softer coat and his hair never tangled as a baby.Go figure LOL |
