Help with Murphy My Murphy is a stubborn little man...he hates to go on walks. I really wish he liked it because Mia LOVES to walk and Murphy is the one that really needs to walk. When I take him I have to end up dragging him all the way or carrying him because I just get fed up. On the way home though he is high tailing it home because he knows I have a cookie waiting for him and the sofa is calling his name. :p Can you guys give me any tips for helping me teach him to enjoy his walks ? |
Maybe if you yelled "hoot, hoot, hoot!" he would follow you? :p What if you tried bribing him with treats? |
Cookie AND a sofa waiting at home? I can't blame the little fella one bit! :) |
I can't give you any help but just thought I would say I feel the same way about going for walks as your Murphy:D |

I knew you were going to come on here with some great idea like that - your too funny!! You know the funny thing is I do yell ..."Murphy - get Mia" which makes him chase her and bite at her tail but only for a little bit and than he is back to dragging his big behind! LOL :p :D I tried cookies but it does not make him walk just sit and one time he rolled over in the middle of the street doing tricks for the cookies. ha, ha...you see I have a mess on my hands. :D :p :D |

This might seem harsh, but what if you occasionally left him? Do you think then he'd become jealous that he didn't get to come and would then WANT to come on the walks? ETA: I still like my original idea best! |

Any other suggestions? I have seriously tried almost anything like taking his treats or even a ball but nothing motivates him to walk and keep walking. It is not like I am taking him on miles of walks. :p |
Caren, I'm sorry and I don't mean to laugh but I can't help it. :p I have no idea what to tell you. Pia also gets very stubburn when she's outside and prefers being carried. I guess she has me trained very well because she's always in my arms. ;) Maybe Trixie should come to visit you guys. Perhaps she could get Murphy to walk or atleast run, LOL. I saw your message and no, she doesn't have a boyfriend. Trix thinks Murphy is one handsome little man. |
My neighborhood is very pretty and I was so looking forward to taking Lucy on walks when I got her - NOT! A year later and she still doesn't like walking. As soon as she is out of sight of the house she tries to go back. I've tried everything. She loves her backyard and don't need no stinkin' walk :p |

LOL, you know I can't help Caren. Sugar considers the leash a form of torture and Spike is convinced he is only physically capable of walking as far as next door. The way I've delt with this training issue is just giving up:rolleyes: |
