Coyotes!!! I am up at 5 am this morning because I heard the coyotes howling and I have to check on "everyone" just to be sure, especially the cat. I am petrified that a coyote will get one of my babies. Of course my yorkies are never outside alone, but I still panic when I hear coyotes do their "kill scream"! I try to realize that they deserve to live here too and that we actually moved into their territory but it is so hard sometimes. Does anyone else have coyotes in their neighborhood? :( |
We used to have them when we lived in the country in VA. One of our dogs, a collie/australian shepherd mix, had her leg shot off by some kinds who thought she was a coyote (from far away she DID look like one). Bravo to you for being concerned, though. I'm sure many people hear them and don't think of the dangers involved. |
We have them at our at our vacation home. As a matter of fact when I was there last week I was walking the dogs late at night..out in the country around our land and heard them start to go at it. They were were very close...too close so I high tailed it back into the house. The sound is very scary , not just the howling but hearing many of them from several areas calling out to each other and then really going at it. Scared the heck out of me. |
That's scary! We don't have Coyote's but we have turkey buzzards and when we moved here everyone told me watch if we have small animals because they've been known to kill them! They're so disgusting! |
wow, that must be scary!! i would be freaking out!! we have NOTHING in my town at all. well except in the winter there are some turkies that come out of the woods, but they just eat and leave. of course we try to stay far away...but my cousin lives in PA and she has bears. |
we have owls, hawks , eagles & wild cats .. They scare me..at least because of my dogs. The do not get out of my site when we are there. I keep them on a leash at all times |
Living in Florida, it seems we have all manner of beasties to potentially threaten... Alligators, Water Mocassins, Eastern Diamondback Rattlers, Pygmy Rattlers, Coral Snakes, Bobcats, Foxes, Hawks, Owls, Peregrine Falcons(these are small though), Ospreys, Eagles, Panthers(very rare) and I even hear now that we have had some spottings of coyotes. Oh yeah, Black Bears too. Not to mention Raccoons and Opossums. Of course Tucker and the cats are indoors at all times but when I had pigeons and chickens, we were constantly losing them to the wildlife - my father and son were actually slammed into by a hawk chasing one of my pigeons. Back when we lived on the lake, we lost two dogs to alligators and one cat and one dog to rattlesnake bites. If you think about it too much it really is scary. Dana |
I understand. I'm usually afraid to leave my dog outside by themselves even with an enclosed 6' wooden fence. I've seen hawks take down creatures in my backyard and I don't want something like that to happen to my yorkies |
I was worried about the hawks 1 Attachment(s) That's why I built this for my little boy! |
Hey I live in Brooklyn, NY. The only things we have are subway rats - yuck! |
I live against the hills with a street separating my house from them. I see coyotes a lot walking around.....I hear them too, and the hawks. I don't let mine out alone either. |
I have coyotes in my area too. I haven't seen one yet, but my girlfriend and my neighbors have all seen them. I end up walking Binky at night. I'm curious to know if some pepper spray will make them go away (God forbid if they tried to attack me/Binky). |

When we use to live in the country, we would hear them practically every night. Someone down the road would feed them. It is a spooky sound to hear a bunch of them calling. I got use to them after a while but like you, I was very conserned about our cat, too! |

Such a cute idea!!!! How lucky for your little poochie!!! |
I remember when I was like 5 or 6 we lived on a hillside and we came home late one night to find 3 coyotes eatting a cat on the side of the house. We very slowly walked in the house and my dad (who has always been a kid at heart) had firecrackers. He lit one and scared them away. Turns out it was the next door neighbors pet cat. I remember being so scared of them and did not want to go outside at night...... oh and skunks too. We had a big problem with them too. Be careful with your babies and if you can get your hands on firecrackers,,,, they work well at scaring them away. |
I just had the builder come out and build a fenced in area (6x6 posts with vinyl fencing) within my backyard. The area is 10x12. It's "gate" is the screen door. It has 2x6 studs running across the top which holds vinyl lattice which is the "roof". The builder also used the lattice material and dug a trench along the fence and buried the fencing about 1 foot down in case my little boy decided he wanted to grow up and be a digger! After the building was complete, I sodded the area with new grass and put in his "doggie loo" (fire hydrant)! Really, since Alley is potty pad trained, he will go out there and play but will haul it inside to go tinkle! Too Funny! |
I have coyotes here by me. Its a nightly ritchual (sp) in the summer to go out and listen to them. Most of the time they will not come near a human so your babies are safe as long as you are out with them. I am planning a camping trip way up in northern wisconsin with my kids and a bunch of friends in mid august and bears are popular up there. We are taking Recon with but the little ones will be staying with my dad. We are going to take our 4 wheelers up with us also. Should be a good time but I hope the bears dont bother us. Last summer a bear raided our camp while we were out riding. Thank God recon rides with us. |
That is so freaky. I've always been scared of coyotes. We sometimes vacation up around Lake Mead and more than a few times coyotes have wandered up onto the patio.. usually after we've been barbecuing out there. Scares me to death to be able to practically look them in the eye. |
We have coyotes and hawks. I am more afraid of the hawks. coyotes won't bother the pup if we are out with her but the hawks will. Our next door neighbors (2 adults) were walking with their 90lb. Golden RETRIEVER and a hawk swooped down and nipped at it last week. She has a nest in the area and we can hear her all day long. I am VERY thankful wee pads were invented. The coyotes frightened me when my cat was younger and he spent the days and early evening out. At 19  he is never outside alone. |
We didn't have coyotes, but we had a pack of wild dogs. Coyotes are mostly scavangers and go after the weak & sick or dead already. and they only kill for food and eat every bit. Wild dogs just kill for fun. When you hear of someone's sheep being multilated and left it's usually wild dogs not coyotes. A couple years back we had to arrange a hunting party to go out and take care of the wild dogs because they were becoming a danger to everyone's animals and families. |

I live in the sticks- there are lots of wildlife bear, hawks, wolves, coyettes (howling all the time-til the hair on the back of your neck stands up). speaking of skunks- I let Macy out the other night without a leash on cause it was dark and there was a skunk- she turned right around when I said come here THANK GOD! It was the first and last time I ever do that without a leash! |

Thats a scary situation. I know just how you feel too where you feel like you have to respect that we are driving the coyotes out of their habitat but you also want your babies to be safe. At least you care about both sides. I know a lot of people out there who would just get rid of the coyotes. I hope you and your babies never have to worry about the coyotes. |
Lost a cat When I lived in Lancaster, CA, we had lots of coyotes, that was the end for one of my cats. He was a beautiful large siamese named Ho Chi Minhn and was just a wonderful cat, but the coyotes got him one night. I chased the damn thing and it would not drop the cat. Broke my heart, since then my cats stay strictly in the house as well as my dogs. |
Brett has them!! i hate taking bentley out at night ..i'm so scared one will come in the yard and get him!! |
Yikes! Wow...talk about living on the edge.....I'd be hightailing my a__ out of there! Geez! How do you sleep at night? I'd be lifting the edge of the toilet seat ever morning...just to be sure.....Lordy...you brave thang! Ha Ha Francie  Quote:
